I think the bird needed a bigger cage coupled with one or more mirrors to give it the allusion of being imprisoned with friends. Since you say you provided food and water it must've chosen to commit suicide out of loneliness. Catch one again and decorate the basket with multiple mirrors then let me know the outcome.

This man, you are busy trapping wild Sparrows and expecting them to survive? wink ..Haba, leave those ones alone now?...why would you want sparrow as a pet?/I have never come across anyone who keeps them as pets.. If you want a small bird that can sing, colourful and good to look at, go to pet shop or market and look for Canaries.. something like the pix attached below..

You will need a spacious cage specifically made for bird keeping, you can get a sample online then get a carpenter to build you a good one; nkata ( basket) is no place to house a bird, its too confined in opinion, even for a short period..

There was a thread here on Canaries a few months ago, you can search for it to get a better understanding in keeping these wonderful birds.. good luck
Noted Sir, thanks. Though, I caught about six of something similar to the specie you recommended few months ago on our mango tree. They use to make a lot of noise and deleaf the tree. This one eat rich a lot. So, I was told. However, I will browse about the bird.

I have this long interest and passion to keep birds as pet. I have severally caught some few birds which I intended keeping as pet. The shocking news is that I usually wake up the following day to meet them dead, even before I could get a bird cage. I do have this bad feelings been somehow responsible for the deaths, and I am equally not pleased not to have my long desires of keeping a bird as pet come through.
Please, I need advise on the following:
1. What could be exactly responsible for the deaths?
2. What is the name of this particular breeds?
3. Can they be kept as pet. If no, which do you recommend? And if Yes, how?

Thanks for your response

I would rather you get an eagle or ostrich, they will not die instead they may outlive you.

You cut their freedom to fly, they die. Simple. Not all birds endure restrictions. Eg a sparrow will never eat anything u give it. They just wanna be free and fly

OP, let me just tell you one confirmed fact about these birds you captured.... They commit suicide when being captured by men... Its natural for these specie, as soon as humans beings touched them, dey commit suicide because they won't be accepted back into their folds if they are released. So don't waste ur time and look for human friendly birds. These ones are no no. I have expected someone to say this from the previous comments.

I thought its tired of looking at scary faces or
Died of frustration
Or boredom
Or poverty
Or depression
Or loneliness
Cuz hunger is out of the equation

Yes, I made provision for their water and even feed.
Okay, it is just that I am a bit confuse if they can be kept as pet. So that I don't get to buy a bird cage and at the end not able to use it.

TO YOUR QUESTION, THEY CAN BE KEPT AS PETS. I HAVE ACTUALLY KEPT THIS SAME SPECIES OF BIRD AS PET AND LATER SOLD THEM ABOUT A MONTH AGO.
THE NAME WE USUALLY CALL THIS SPECIE OF BIRD IS 'ZINC BIRD' SINCE THEY NORMALLY BUILD THEIR NEST IN THE ROOF OF HOUSES. FROM WHAT I SEE IN THAT PICS, THAT BIRD IS STILL A BABY BIRD BECAUSE IT STILL HAS WHITE STRIP ON THE SIDE OF IT BEAK LIKE BERI BERI, AND WILL NEED PROPER ATTENTION FOR IT TO SURVIVE SINCE IT STILL RELY ON THE MOTHER FOR A BETTER PART OF IT FEEDING.
THAT SPECIE OF BIRD IS VERY EASY TO KEPT AS PET AND THEY ARE VERY STRONG, AND EAT FOODS WHICH ARE VERY COMMON LIKE COOK RICE, BREAD, DRY GARRI, AND WHAT HAUSA PEOPLE CALL JUORO E.T.C
I WILL ADVICE YOU TO GET AN ADULT OF THIS BIRD, AND THEN GIVE IT CLEAN WATER AND BREAD OR RICE, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT YOU WILL BE THE ONE TO GET TIRED OF IT. IT IS A VERY LIVELY BIRD

. On the other hand you may go for weaver bird (Google), they feed on virtually every food man eats. You have the one like pix.(female), pix. with black head(male), & very dark with yellow patches (king); growing up we called it champion. (One in a tree like..., very manymany, just like the typical canary.

THE ONE HE RECOMMENDED FOR YOU IS A CANARY AND THE TREND HE REFERRED YOU TO, I CREATED IT WITH MY ALT. ACCT. MR DRIX. BUT THE SPECIE YOU CAUGHT ABOUT SIX OF THEM, ARE WEAVER BIRD. IT IS FAR DIFFERENT FROM A CANARY AND BOTH CAN NOT BE COMPARED AS A CANARY IS MORE INTELLIGENT AND CAN MAKE SWEET MELODIES THAN THE WEAVER BIRD.

How would you feel when you are captured and placed in a cage as pet? Animals deserve freedom too.

I also think these kind of birds are difficult to keep..
I once caught a swift and a weaver bird some 10 yrs ago, but they never lived past a day. Although, I had no idea what they ate back then, so I provided the usual food for doves and pigeons.. I later got to find out they eat more of insects..
I once caught a kingfisher too, but the kind of noise it makes made me released it immediately.

ha ha ha. you funny gan

you are struggling with common sparrow while i dey struggle with baby falcon sef. (kestrel)

btw I don't cage my bird. I used to tie it, but the sharp guy untied all the knots on its leg and ripped of its anklets.

so i just let him free around my house and balcony which is spacious enough and filled with plants.
(still training him though so i can take her outdoors later for hunting small prey).

ample amount of sunlight and perching spots to spread his wings.

A perch is necessary. mine needs a rough carpeted material. don't let your bird perch on the cold floor. it will get bumblefoot or some other sore condition.

make sure his dietery requirements are fulfilled.

In my case , my girl needs fresh meat, bones, insect , lizard and live prey if possible. (day old chick, rats, sparrow, etc.)

if giving just organ meat, add some vitamin powder or inject vitamin supplements into the food.

Always provide sufficient water.

summary:

-enough space
-perch
-shelter/box/nest
-nutritious food
-water
-sunlight/fresh air
-company . remember for birds : Boredom kills .
don't you feel it can fly away anytime?
