Lagos—Following the directive by Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on the enforcement of Law against hawking in the state, most streets and highways at the weekend seemed deserted by traders for fear of being arrested.

This came as the Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences, vowed to commence a total enforcement on street trading across the state as directed by the governor today.

Ambode at the weekend, directed law enforcement agencies to commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers from July 1, 2016, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

The governor, speaking at a live interview, said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section I of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

However, observations over the weekend showed that quite a number of the traders deserted major highways, but have employed other means of hawking their wares.

In Oshodi, Egbeda, Ikeja, Ikotun, Ojo, among other areas of the state, few street hawkers were seen on the road but with vigilance.

It was gathered that most of the traders who were complaining bitterly against the law, accused the state government of planning to ruin their sources of living and thereby take to crime.

One of the street traders, simply identified as Uche, who spoke to Vanguard at Egbeda area, said he has no other trade than selling handkerchiefs and confessionary which he had engaged in for the past six years since he finished his Ordinary National Diploma, OND, from a Polytechnic.

He explained that in order to avoid arrest, they have come up with a new trend of keeping their wares in a hidden place, while they display only few for sale.

“By this means the law enforcement agents can not easily detect or see us to arrest. More so, it will be easier for us to escape when the chips are down.

Meanwhile the Public Affairs Officer of the taskforce, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, when contacted on the number of suspects arrested so far since the announcement by the governor, said, “Honestly, we are yet to make any arrest, but as from tomorrow (today), the taskforce unit, to be led by its Chairman, Superintendent of Police, Olayinka Egbeyemi, with other security outfits and men of the Kick Against Indiscipline, will launch a total enforcement across the metropolis and y one caught in the process shall be prosecuted accordingly.”

Governor Ambode, while sympathizing with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck in the process of evading arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) along Maryland Bus stop last Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the death and destruction of public assets.

Consequently, Ambode said the state Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence.

You just had to be tribalistic because you saw "uche". What of the Yoruba woman and her kids hawking pure water at Ketu? What about the Hausa man selling tomatoes on Mile 12 bridge? It is really saddening the way some of you reason.

Even tho the policy sounds elitist, it's a welcome development. We all envy the progress of the Western world but we frown at policies that can make our society be like theirs. No street hawker in London, nobody sells sausage in newyork traffic. I think it's time people start realizing that lagos is like a country in Nigeria where other vices in other states will not be tolerated. Nigeria has 36 states and as a citizen you are free to live in any of the remaining 35 States if hawking is your destiny. Most people living in Lagos have no business there. Most Nigerians see lagos as a greener pasture or mini London hence they relocate there with little money and resources with which they can thrive in more economic friendly cities to suffer for nothing. How do you explain youths leaving the southeast en-mass with the hope of selling gala and lacasera in traffic all in the name of living in Lagos? How do you explain northerners leaving there states only to come to lagos with the hope of begging and sleeping under bridges? Go back to your state if you can't cope with the directives of the lagos state government. For the fact that your parents raised you to become a doctor through selling wares on the streets doesn't make Street hawking right. No sane society allows such menace to thrive. If the hawker that was crushed by a BRT bus happened to be your family member, i guess you won't fault this policy. Living in Lagos is not by force, go back to wherever you come from. undecided

Do you see Ewa agoyin hawkers on Ikorodu road, western avenue, 3rd MB, Agege/ Abeokuta motor road, Oshodi Apapap expressway, Awolowo road, Ahmadu Bello way, or any others highways ?
If you are stubborn enough to hawk on those roads, try it and see

Stoopid people tribalizing the thread already. If you think Igbos are the only victims then you're mad! Go to the same Egbeda where Uche was interviewed and see Iya Afeez and Iya Monsuru strapped with babies on their backs hawking lacasera, teem and bottled water. What will be their next source of income if Ambode bans and arrest them?

Let iya afeez and iya monsura find attachment in the street and leave highway ,
They re not used to highway selling until igbo boys influenced them.
They will surely find their way out, this is child's play compared to what fashola did to iyalojas.
They still survive by attaching to those that have shops arround.
Highway hawking should be scrapped.

For every law, there is an exception. Ewa Agoin and Agege bread can never ever be banned. If Ambode or Atide ever tries it, what happened in 1770 that lead to the Yoruba Civil War will repeat itself. I stand with Ewa Agoin...... Where do you stand?
