You shouldn't talk like that you are also being tribalistic.

You don't have to mind what anybody says since it doesn't add or remove anything from you.

Please let peace reign on nairaland.

How do the government want them to survive
Re: Enforcement Of Ban On Hawking In Lagos Starts Today by shine12: 9:07am On Jul 04, 2016
I find it utterly ironic that the petty endeavours of the poor that they use as a means of survival – okada riding & hawking, is being gradually eradicated by a government that is so dedicated to having a perfect visually looking city but hasn’t provided an alternative means of survival that would replace the “public hawking” that’s been erased.

We certainly do not have any social allowance given to unemployed youths and yet the government seeks to eliminate their source of income. In case our government is not aware of this, the reason why there is minimal theft and burglary in the Western countries compare to Africa and other third world countries is not because the citizens of the west are holier (far from it), it’s because there is some form of basic allowances provided by the government of these countries to the lowest earners/no earners in the society, take away these allowances, then the so called western countries will have an increase rate in burglary as well.

What we fail to realise is the action of the people in power is what pushes the least enlightened or the paupers to take up extreme measures of survival. We saw that in the French revolution. It’s a world-wide known principle. The corrupt system and unsecured country we have today is decades long collation of corruption in high places. People’s salary and pension have been used to buy mansions in Switzerland and Dubai. Money meant to be for youth empowerment and job creation have been stolen by corrupt officials over the past decades and now you want clean street with no hawking like London when you do NOT have the social welfare budget of the UK which is the highest part of the whole National budget.

There we go again! So it was Igbo boys who hawk on the road influenced yoruba people to hawk? I give up on your reasoning.

Madam, seems u are finding it difficult to comprehend my statement. Let me put in a lame man explanation. LGA has ban activities of omo oniles, etc.

As for the hawkers, I also feel the decision is harsh but it's for their safety and that is what a reasonable government should do. However, Ambode should provide mobile/mini shops to accommodate their activities just like the way its being done in western countries.

Even tho the policy sounds elitist, it's a welcome development. We all envy the progress of the Western world but we frown at policies that can make our society be like theirs. No street hawker in London, nobody sells sausage in newyork traffic. I think it's time people start realizing that lagos is like a country in Nigeria where other vices in other states will not be tolerated. Nigeria has 36 states and as a citizen you are free to live in any of the remaining 35 States if hawking is your destiny. Most people living in Lagos have no business there. Most Nigerians see lagos as a greener pasture or mini London hence they relocate there with little money and resources with which they can thrive in more economic friendly cities to suffer for nothing. How do you explain youths leaving the southeast en-mass with the hope of selling gala and lacasera in traffic all in the name of living in Lagos? How do you explain northerners leaving there states only to come to lagos with the hope of begging and sleeping under bridges? Go back to your state if you can't cope with the directives of the lagos state government. For the fact that your parents raised you to become a doctor through selling wares on the streets doesn't make Street hawking right. No sane society allows such menace to thrive. If the hawker that was crushed by a BRT bus happened to be your family member, i guess you won't fault this policy. Living in Lagos is not by force, go back to wherever you come from. undecided

Which other state in Nigeria provides brand new air conditioned buses to ferry the masses around consistently? Absolutely none. I am with LASG on this total/absolute enforcement,......the heavy fines generated would help repair those buses and also add a little to the state's IGR.

You don't seem to get it either..how effective is the LGA ban on omonile activites and irritating agberos that has littered the whole place? Banning the hawkers will be more effective, you can bet it.

Abi no be this same Lagos that Fashola said house rent should be only 1yr and till last weekend some landlords still insist on 2yrs rent.
I hope you heard of the hawker that was killed by a BRT bus at Independence tunnel, Maryland last week while been chased by KAI officers.

When young NIGERIANS wake up to war on jingoistic and ethnocentric veins over an issue as this, I juxtapose Nigeria and Nairaland and wonder if they are mirror images of each other.

The law has been passed since 2003 but has not been strictly enforced because same Lagos government through it's agents collect taxes from hawkers and street traders.
I want traders and hawkers off the streets and highways for their own good and that of all other road users. It is quite sad that the Lagos government is enforcing this prohibition because it is irked by the destruction of BRT buses and not as a concern for lives or a need for effective law enforcement.
Pure water sachets took over from "tie tie water"....innovation.
Innovation will rid Lagos of hawkers, not arrests and imprisonment.

Stoopid people tribalizing the thread already. If you think Igbos are the only victims then you're mad! Go to the same Egbeda where Uche was interviewed and see Iya Afeez and Iya Monsuru strapped with babies on their backs hawking lacasera, teem and bottled water. What will be their next source of income if Ambode bans and arrest them?

You can see how Yorubas easily tribalize evry single thread.

There are thousands of Yorubas hawking on the streets of Lagos but these guys are bothered about Igbos.

Exactly. I always love and advocate innovation. With innovation government can still merge demand with supply under controlled conditions. You talk about pure water, in the deveoped world they had public fountains and cisterns as far back as the Roman empire. These can be commecialised and leased to individuals to run. So many ideas are out there. The other day in Portharcourt I was discussing with someone on job creation and the building of public rest rooms to handle the present sanitation challenge and he just laughed it off. I went on a site inspection and wanted to relieve myself but there was nowhere, even the nearest petrol station had no toilet. I had to cut short the inspection just because of something someone could make money out of. Will everyone simply return home or to his hotel room simply to answer the call of nature.

There are so many services lacking in Nigeria that could employ a large mass of people while reducing the cost of living but we as a people and the government that should organise us cannot seem to see and grasp them. The advancement of societies depend on tne constant generation of ideas to make life easier, cheaper, safer and more efficient to live. We in Nigeria on the other hand are always in a struggle with ignorance that brings about hardship while all it takes is to think our way out.

Lols guy stop deceiving yourself... when one knows he won't encounter hawkers on the road he will always plan ahead.

For example b4 leaving maryland for v/i he will drink Nuff water so when stuck in traffic he won't thirst.

Let those igbo boys with no shops go back to east and hawk abeg.

Let those northerners with deformities and disabilities go back to the north abeg.

Let those yorubas with nothing to offer go back to their states. #simple

We have many igbo boys with shops doing business and earning profits without causing discomfort to others. But in the interest of making more profit they call Uche to come from the village then give him quantity daily to go and hawk on d express. Haba.

Most of these hawkers are working under someone.

Certain laws are not strictly enforced because of unemployment/ low level of development
That is why satchet water business has not been banned; Okada too

But when people doing illegal business now destory public property because one was knocked down while evading arrest
what do you do?
Give in or keep to the law

Sadly, Ambode has been shown by Lagosians that humane/civil approach will be seen as "weakness"
The LASTMAS issuance of ticket policy comes to mind

The key to solving two opposing ideals is INNOVATION. It is not a crime to make a living. It is a fundamental human right and an obligation of government to care for its citizens, however the government cannot sit back and watch the environment, the safety and the security of the same citizens be jeopardised in the process. It js only innovation that can satisfy both parties, only ideas that can breach the divide. We should go down that lane.
