Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by Islie(op): 7:28pm On Jul 04, 2016
Hundred of street traders were on Monday arrested in different parts of Lagos metropolis by men of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), for hawking on the streets.

The State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, had last week Friday announced the enforcement of law banning street trading and hawking.

Ambode, who was speaking on a live TV interview, warned that the law stipulate six months jail term or N90,000 fine for offenders.

The governor said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

Our reporter who went round the metropolis to monitor the enforcement reported that men of the KAI were picking up streets hawkers' for allegedly violating the law.

The traders were picked up in areas like Mariland, Oshodi, Ikeja, Ojota among other areas in the metropolis.

At the Ikeja railway line, our reporter observed as a woman was led into a waiting van.

Also at the Alausa office of KAI, our reporter saw many street traders who were arrested by men of the organization.

It would be recalled that riot broke out last week in Maryland following the killing of a hawker by an articulated vehicle.

Following the killing some buses under the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) scheme belonging to the state government were allegedly destroyed by hoodlums, who thought one of the buses killed the hawker.

According to the governor, 49 buses which worth N139 million, were destroyed by the hoodlums.

Importexport.. You be Ghost?

Nice policy buh how would they survive when they can't even build a shop nor rent.

In this current harsh economy, you can't even afford to rent a shop in Lagos.

This is just like snatching one's life.

This gonna results to more Violence in the state.

I think it's high time some traders left to their various state of origin.
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by Nobody:
Lol no wonder some of them chipu-chips sprinters are not online grin

Anyway, I'll rather have them fined instead of arresting them.

I'm in support of this ban tho. Child labour is a no-no and a radical move has to be made to tackle it

The government should also provide alternatives
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by wristbangle: 7:38pm On Jul 04, 2016
Even though I support the implementation of this ban, alternate means suppose to be provided for these hawkers to survive.

Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by Nobody: 7:53pm On Jul 04, 2016
Who are the targets of this law
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by Nobody: 7:55pm On Jul 04, 2016
They should find alternatives to them even if providing stalls for them
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by ba7man(m): 7:59pm On Jul 04, 2016
It's quite painful but it's time for some people to return to their various states or think of other means of generating income. sad sad sad

The fact that they've been left for so long has increased them to embarrassing numbers.

They voted change, so dey cannot complain.

We tried to warn dem about APC.

Just for the record, Ambode is being pure wicked as ever.

U have not provided alternative employment but u are passing laws to deny the poor traders the little employment they manage.

Tomorrow, ur task force will chase dem to early grave on the roads and call it accident.

So when will they be ripe for it?
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by goodlifehyd(m):
This is a welcome development thou, lots of traffic robbers pretend to be hawkers, and some of this hawkers destroy roads just to create traffic so they could sell, this set of people are responsible for most of the dirts on the street, they sometimes empty this dirts in the gutters which cause flood
Re: Ban On Hawking: Traders Arrested In Lagos (Pic) by ajasa4link: 8:12pm On Jul 04, 2016
This is a welcome development...... More arrests should be made, the young ones among them should be taken to welfare, while the older ones should be taken to detention centres where they can learn a particular trade/ handwork. This should however come with a prize, they should be made to farm and the produce should be sold by the government to generate more internal generated revenue which can then be re invested in the society at large. If it is done this way, the government will succeed in saving more lives, ensuring the hawkers get empowered and also make some little cash
