E.g: write these sentences inpidgin english. 1. I am agoraphobic 2. The comprehension passage is too complex and complicated for me to comprehend. 3. The juxtaposition of these theoretical concepts is tantamount to futility. Oya o....i dey wait. 2 Likes |

The language is officially known as NIGERIAN PIDGIN. From research, it is the most widely spoken language and most widely understood language in Nigeria. Most people who don't understand or speak English still use Nigerian Pidgin to a considerable extent. I discovered that many places in Nigeria have some localized forms of the language. For example, there is Waffi (Warri&environs), Baffi (Benin&environs), Jos pidgin, Kaduna pidgin, and of course, Ajegunle/Lagos pidgin. The challenge is how to synthesize the various localized forms of the language into a congruent whole such that it can be used and understood by all Nigerians and others. The language needs to be in more written form. It has also been discovered that many who claim to understand Nigerian Pidgin cannot read it, as they have been used to the slang form. Interestingly, some organizations and media houses are now promoting the language. I know of Wazobia FM in Lagos. The Jehovah's Witnesses are also actively promoting the use of a standardized form of Nigerian Pidgin as they have produced several videos and written publications in Nigerian Pidgin. They also have a pidgin website at WWW.JW.ORG/PCM. Apart from Nigerian Pidgin, there are many other forms of pidgin worldwide, including but not limited to: Cameroonian Pidgin, Solomon Islands Pidgin, etc. My broda and sista dem, the koko of the mata be sey mek all of us dey use the language because na we own. E dey make us fit gum bodi well and undastand one anoda. Wetin I dey talk be sey, Nigerian Pidgin, e gud well well! Na Baba God take am bless us for we kontri! 3 Likes |

asuustrike2009: Are you aware that many cannot communicate in their mother tongue? English language is taught in schools, Pidgin is the street version which people easily pick up. Why should effort be made for it to be taught in schools also not forgetting it has so many variants? I communicate fluently in English, Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin and Swahili. so speaking one's mother tongue is a preservation of identity. |

Donbrig: This article annoys me slightly as someone who read English. Anyone who spent a moderate amount of time studying English in the university or borrowing a course from English would easily be able to explain it to you. Back then, we inquired the same question to our lecturers, "why isn't pidgin the official language of Nigeria?" First, in order to get some facts right, let me tell you now that "pidgin" or "broken" or "vernacular" is NOT a "language". (As a matter of fact, calling it so in an English lecture room back then was the fastest way to annoy our lecturer.) If i recall correctly, in the stages of language formation, there are: Pidgins Creoles Languages Now Pidgin is a regional and social variety derived from the proper British English in which it's main use was as a language of commerce and limited communication. In other words, ALL forms of pidgin exists because it was REQUIRED for colonial masters to communicate with their slaves (I.e. us), and as such they invented a bastardized form of the language which was aptly utilized for that purpose. It was only after the colonial rule that certain countries still utilized the pidgin, most usually due to their lack of proficiency in the proper British English. Nigerian Pidgin borrows words heavily from other varieties, lacks unique phonological, orthographical, lexical and syntactical cohesiveness, and it is a primitive form of language which only exists today due to its ease of accessibility to Nigerians as a neutral ground of communication between all the different tribes. The Nigerian Pidgin cannot become a language because there are several different varieties of it as spoken according to their users, with each tribe impacting their own signature on the way they use it. Before the Nigerian pidgin can be considered worthy enough to stand on its own as a language, it needs to undergo several steps and then evolve to become a creole and then undergo even MORE steps before we can even think of calling it a language. But so far, the chances of that happening are very, very slim. So in short: bros, abeg fashi that pidgin jawe and go learn beta thing, cause as i dey see am ba, na d correct English sweet pass for mouth. 1 Like |
