I was in part 3 of my medical school when this happened. I also lived in Awo hall, it happened life & direct. There was total panicking on campus. One brillant part 4 medical student was also killed in Fajuyi hall in that attack. Ojo buruku esu gbomi mu. I respect the leadership of then students Union President- Legacy. Where for God sake is legacy?

Must we talk about this every year?

In the 90s and early 2000 stories of killings and unfortunate death filled every where mostly in the east and south south of which this story is way below the ladder of the wanton destructions caused .

Afrika...i didnt meet him. i was admitted into oau a year after the incidence. I heard all that happened first hand from senior colleagues. Great Ife, my alma mater.

....sad memory of scary and horrible night! It's worse than recent terror attack on France. The medical student was killed on d corridor leading to our room in Fajuyi hall.

That night was bloody.

I enjoyed reading - near vivid account of what happened in 98.

The issue of cultists in our campuses is just a sad one. It is real and there are powerful people backing them. I have seen great prospects fall to the ground as a result of associating with these insane groups.

I am very sure, there is some very powerful dark spirit behind cultism in Nigeria -- the false power it gives is not natural. Why would a normal person want to join a group knowing he could get killed ruthlessly by another group?

But who failed us here?
The government: their actions and inactions.
The Religious Institutions: they somehow tend to shy away from this topic, knowing fully, a number of their congregation belongs to secret cults.
Good people: for doing nothing.

Its good great Ife have stamped out cultism. My lovely Alma mater. I really hate cultism, I will never forget the incident whereby cultist sent police to arrest my roomate and I all the way from another town in the evening for reporting them. Imaging them & their Capo siting with DPO in the interrogation room. Without evidence. I called my lawyer and they went berserk. Was later released but lost my respect for Police ever since. Kids please shun cultism.

I got to know abt this massacre wen I watched a popular Yoruba movie "OMO UNIVERSITY" where Gabriel Afolayan brother of Kunle Afolayan acted as "AFRIKA" I never knew it was all abt OAU..... I Amb. Paul Zoe mourn with the OAU Student's community on the loss of their 5 Heroes mostly especially Afrika.

Rest in peace. These are true heroes. Nt the SUGs we nw have in Nigerian higher institutions who are only good at giving awards to corrupt nd wicked politicians.

Only OAU students both current and past will understand the importance of this story.

Throughout my academic stay in OAU never for once did I fear any cult attack neither did I receive any threat from anyone. It was so unusual even tho it used to be the norm.

OAU students stood in unity and fought Campus Cultism to a halt. This shows the importance and strength in speaking with one voice and fighting together for a just course.

Say no to Cultism , it is a killer of dream and purpose!!!

The massacre brought about anti cultism crusade organization in Nigeria University campuses nation wide. With head quarter in Ambrose Alli University. I was in my 100 level in AAU then.

It was door go door campaign involving locals and women. Cultist where killed ( jungle justice)
