The tragedy of the whole story is that nothing was done about the killers.

Something's got to change.Somehow.

I was a correspondent to UI SUB for my Hall Press - Zik Hall, as at that time.

They had their evil meeting in the SRC chambers of the Students' Union Building of Uni. Of Ibadan. Strange faces were noticed on that day and we knew they were from other Unis but we could not place what was going down. It was a union of boys from institutions in SW and SS majorly -- Uniben, Ekpoma, Futa etc.

We knew something was up, but where - we do not know. Definitely not UI. Much later, we were able to get a hint that the target school is Ife.

Boys were dispatched to Ife to warn them. Ask their President as at then. They only said it is Ife and nothing can happen.

3 days later they moved from UI and struck mercilessly in Ife.

I later served in Rivers State with one of the boys that struck in Ife that night. He said DSS arrested every single one of them. They were in detention for a long time. He lost some years in Futa but still graduated much later. According to him, some were outrightly shot and killed, while some with powerful connections were the ones taken to the court. Some were granted bail and never still released as at that time.

He said the prison warden just came to him and said you can go. He even felt they were either going to kill him or he will be shot as he is going. He walked into his father's house like a ghost.

He claims he regrets his actions.

U mean ACCON, yes thats what brought the birth of ACCON in AAU, Ekpoma. The same massacre happen in Ekpoma in 2003 @ Rev Martins Hall, ACCON building. Five students were killed that night and the was October 8,2003.

A society that doesn't value life is bound to have a perverse justice system, that usually give selective justice to those it deem guilty.

That day was the dat i saw hell on earth. We were supposed to have chm 101 test in the morning of that incident. I was in 100 level at that time, I lived in angola hall while in awo hall there was kegite in incitation going on of which AFRIKA was to be initiated . Guys did u know that the cultist that was put to handle angola guys was a lady? Omo see guys running into the bush without looking back. The medical student that was Hit by a stray bullet was painful because he bleeded to death when no one could save him. His blood changed the colour of the fruit Tree in the medical building from green to red. This story is back on the headline this year? Guess its the anniversary. I was in UI when the tragic incident occurred. So sad.

I can believe his account. This confession coming from the VC shows that Powers beyond the university frustrated Justice.

The only condolence we have is that their efforts has frustrates and led to the zero tolerance of Cultism on OAU campus, this I enjoyed in my 6-year stay in Ife.

Every year this story will resurface again. Is it being told to remind the families of the dead ones or brush the ego of the cultist.?
In the 90s and early 2000 stories of killings and unfortunate death filled every where mostly in the east and south south of which this story is way below the ladder of the wanton destructions caused .
This story is painting of a pix where some of our young ones will start liking cultist life rather than the opposite.

i guess you were young when the incident happened. Why this story will be ever green in ife is (1) it mark the end of cultism in ife. Don't get me wrong, there are still Cult in ife but not like the way it was before the incident. (2) ife is too security conscious and so the attack was like a shock to the school. (3) those remembering it are students at that time whose life changed after the attack. Eg myself, after the attack i see cultism as not just crime but worst than evil, now my nephews are been adviced by me against cultism. Even my kids though still young but i ensure i know their movements. So let the remembrance continue for life

Very glad I graduated from OAU. Ethics and norms in that school are very unnigerian. Up until my graduation a couple of years ago, Eviano Ekelemu's picture and story remained in Fajuyi hall, my hall of residence as a student in OAU. Brings back mixed memories every year when this topic comes up on Nairaland. It's always good to remember those who died for the freedoms we enjoy today. His parents will be more than glad, even till this day, that he fought and died for a worthy cause in a more than worthy school.

Guy ask question about what u don't know. The SUG of that time led by LEGACY, AFRIKA, were fearless. The school authority led by Pro WALE OMOLE knew that if the students goverment were called as witness then the case would have been lost by the Cult so that decided to rush the case by not calling for witness at all.

I was in part 3 of my medical school when this happened. I also lived in Awo hall, it happened life & direct. There was total panicking on campus. One brillant part 4 medical student was also killed in Fajuyi hall in that attack. Ojo buruku esu gbomi mu. I respect the leadership of then students Union President- Legacy. Where for God sake is legacy?
