Hello
Re: Offshore Oil Worker, lets Meet Here by ogomkendy: 9:28am On May 06, 2016
Hello Everyone, I am a researcher currently assessing Work Life Balance and its impact on Productivity amongst Petroleum Engineers, specifically the offshore workers in the Petroleum industry in Nigeria.

Work-Life Balance (WLB) is the perfect blend of work and non-work related activities (family, friends, parents, health, hobbies, learning & personal development) such that work is not sacrificed for life, or vice-versa; there's a healthy balance.

Please, I'm going to need only the offshore engineers on this platform to tell me,

1) What a Healthy Work-Life Balance (WLB) personally means to you (e.g. that I have time for family & friends, that I can travel at will, that I can study alongside my work, etcetera)

2) How you experience a healthy or unhealthy WLB, and if the organizations you work for are doing enough to promote WLB policies and practices.

3)How a healthy or unhealthy WLB, as the case may be, impacts or affects your level of productivity and performance on the job.

4) And, how to you, a healthy or unhealthy WLB, is not a determinant of your productivity level, why is it so? Or,
Apart from a healthy WLB, how other management or organizational practices have a positive and negative significant impact on your productivity? Discuss freely

If you are reluctant to drop your comments, here, please drop me an email on ogom.kendy@gmail.com

Thank you for sharing, please.

You sound like have been on ABO FPSO.. Anyway, you forgot to add that there are emergency drills performed on a routine basis (fire, toxic gases, Pirates, man-over board, etc). Also, people (especially first times) tend to develop sea sickness (nausea and vomiting).unfortunately for me, my shift made me miss, Xmas, new year, Easter, anniversaries last year.. But in all, when u see your pay slip, you somehow forget the pains...lol.,. Am a subsea engineer
hello all.
I'v learnt a lot from this thread.
But I also want to ask. Do electrical/electronics engineers get to be subsea engineers? and what exactly do they do?.
Many thanks as I expect your detailed responses.

Any engineering graduate can be trained to be a Subsea Engineer by a good company like GE, FMC, etc. The basic job of a subsea engineer is to ensure the functionalities of the subsea Christmas trees, Hydraulic power units, ECS, Monitor the Umbilicals status to ensure there are no leaks subsea, carry out daily/weekly/monthly checks on several aspects of the subsea system; which include carrying out cleanliness/particle test of the hydraulic fluid to ensure it complies with the minimum requirements on NAS6 (for offshore) and a whole lot more. There is also the Software part which may require troubleshooting in case the SEMS or channels fail. These are just the minimum tasks; there is a whole lot more to it.

So one stays offshore permanently or shuttle between office and offshore, because the view that formed in my mind with this offshore thing is to experience it not at all times. Regimented life. Just like NYSC CAMP.

Most careers start from the field before going to the office. As a Subsea engineer, You can render field support from the office as a Subsea Field Support Engineer. You may be posted to the field as a Subsea Engineer. When you go offshore, you are there to work. You may call it regimented, but it's nothing like NYSC camp. A lot of guys prefer working on the field than in the office.
