The National Universities Commission (NUC) has warned prospective students not to enroll in the degree and postgraduate diploma in education programmes by the Kaduna-based National Teachers Institute (NTI) as the programmes are illegal.

This warning is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Information and Public Relations of the Commission, Mr Ibrahim Yakasai.

He said that the institute has persistently ignored advice by the commission to abstain from mounting degree programmes as the institute lacks the necessary approval for affiliation with any university.

The statement adds that degree and post graduate diploma certificates obtained from the NTI will not be recognized for the purposes of employment, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and further studies. https://www.channelstv.com/2016/07/19/nuc-declares-nti-degrees-illegal/

If they are illegal..why allow them operate Why not use law enforcement agencies to close all their centres, arrest the key stakeholders nationwide Now, possibly because someone somewhere have failed in giving the NUC a "Big Cola" they are out ranting.. when thousands of Nigerians have enrolled or graduated from this same Institute....who will pay damages to those innocent victims...Nigeria sef!

Everything about this country is in total disarray. I keep wondering how NTI will be using half baked lecturers, dilapidated secondary school structures etc and still be awarding degrees! This country is a huge joke taken too far!!!

It will take years (maybe century) for Nigeria to get it right educationally.

They are allowed to operate as a diploma or certificate awarding institute. Anything higher requires an affiliation with an existing institute

The Institute should simply be upgraded, and staffed with qualified Lecturers.


There's nothing difficult or complex about a degree please. Many top Universities abroad offer same ONLINE.


Nigeria should grow up.

N are both sides (NUC &NTI) stands for 'National'.

Meaning Nigeria scams itself.

I observed that this body (NTI) has no classroom of its own, they rather makes use of dilapidated classrooms of anyhow schools; however the structure of their Secretariats can compete with that of American Embassy.

What then is the fate of those innocent ones carrying NTI's certificate, and those who just enrolled?

Funny...NTI does not feel bothered about the statement because they are also a sort of regulatory agency for teachers and as far as recognizing those degrees and certiticates are concerned, they are a major stakeholder. Even those who obtained degrees in other schools still need to register with them. So its not as easy as NUC thinks.

Nevertheless, NTI should get accreditation for their PGD programmes only and jettison the idea of awarding bachelors of education 'cos its not acceptable.
Nigeria is rotten. Every org. View their mandate in terms of revenue and bribery avenue, even NUC too. Otherwise, how come it they are declaring a programme that has run for years illegal, a programme that some lectureres and profs already attended. All for bribery.
