This should have gone in the religious section, but religion and politics are the same (tools for public control). And religion has been part of the criteria for voting in Nigeria. Now to the main issue, as a Nigerian 100% of all our politicians corrupt and those claimed not to be, still serving and retired, are all affiliated to a religious body. None have I read his/her profile ascertaining his/her disbelief in a diety, stating to be an Atheist. So am asking, if an Atheist (one that is publicly known to be one) comes out to contest for a public position will you vote for Him/Her? NB: You shouldn't use his or her competence level as a criteria cos those already voted for have shown their competence and incompetence in the past and present. Yes or No, stating your reasons. Modified: Religion has always been a yardstick for electing a public office holder here in Nigeria not minding if he/she is competent enough. So, I am using that same yardstick on a non-religious person. Do you think a non-religious person will have the tendency to perform better? |

Someone like me whom have taken a critical gaze at religion, after studying what it all stands for and finally have concluded that the lies therein is much greater than all the truths put together.. Having faith only on humanity says yes, I would vote them. . For someone to reject religion goes a long way to explain the persons hunger for truth and most atheists are truthful... At least, I am a very honest person.. |

Is there anything that makes a religious person better than an atheist?...that's my question religious people have been ruling Nigeria since 1960 till date, it has not impacted on her citizens rather it impoverished them the more Try and appoint those who claims holier than though in a position of authority and they'll embezzle the funds in their care undermining their religious principles we are among the most religious country and among the most corrupt society in the world today, religious leaders don't preach against corruption bcs they benefits from the system if an atheist become our leader tomorrow there will be a radical change starting from law enforcement and order,.. stringent laws will be passed to tame corruption the over celebrated religious institutions will be compelled to pay tax which would rake in billions of Naira annually, how can one justify the fact that the biggest industry in a nation is exempted from paying tax while the operators are cruising in private Jets it will help to improve our social amenities, equip our Hospitals, Education etc |

No, I wouldn't!!! Despite our leaders being hypocritical Christians and Muslims, they are still in every way better than an atheist. An atheist would see nothing wrong with GAY marriage, abortion and other conventionalised sacrileges. |

I would vote for a native doctor if I think he is good. Your religion means absolutely nothing to me. So,yes,I prefer to vote an advanced atheist who cares nothing about any religion. |

| Re: Will You Vote For An Atheist? by AgentOfAllah: 6:02am On Aug 01, 2016 |
UncleSnr:It is not clear what you mean when you suggest that the person's competence shouldn't be considered. Do you mean to ask if I would vote the person because they are atheist, irrespective of their adeptness? Or do you mean to ask if the person's atheism will play a role in my decision, supposing the person is competent enough? If you mean the former, then most definitely not! I'll not vote for someone because they are atheist. That's the stupid herd-shepherd mentality that has brought us here. "Our pikin, our pikin", "Musulumi ne, musulumi ne"! On the other hand, if you mean the latter, then I'll most definitely vote for the person, because all that really should count is competence, not professed belief (or lack thereof) in any religion. |

Nigeria by constitution is a secular state. I do not need a religious man as leader because his religion is of no importance to the functions of a secular government. So being an atheist will not stop me from voting a competent candidate as leader. |

I will not vote an atheist just because he's an atheist, i will only vote the person i believe to be the most credible candidate. Everyone can delude themselves with the notion of moral superiority and better pinciples - One thing is certain: We are all humans and we each are alike in emotions, fear, greed and our need to to survive and we each have equal potential to great good that can change the world or terrible evil that also can. No matter your beliefs, religiosity or irreligiosity |

UncleSnr:No, I'll not vote for a person because they are irreligious. A non religious person will not be any more/less inclined to perform better than a religious one. |

A person should be voted for not because of his religious views or lack thereof but his competence and vision for the country... |

Election should be irrespective of people personal beliefs rather their competence. |
| Re: Will You Vote For An Atheist? by AgentOfAllah: 2:14pm On Aug 01, 2016 |
ifenes: ![]() It is hard not to be intoxicated by the rich quixotism of anarchy; I speak from personal experience. Nevertheless, the tyranny of the majority, will always infringe on your individual rights, whether you vote or not. As such, you will only match/subdue the force of that tyranny with an opposing majority. Basically, the bigger the group, the easier it is to negotiate any particular individual rights that matter to you without being trampled upon. |
| Re: Will You Vote For An Atheist? by ifenes(m): 5:04pm On Aug 01, 2016 |
AgentOfAllah:An Anarchist is probably what I am. I have never seen a need for a government or mob rule, where the majority push their views about life on the minorities. A case where the 51% rules over the 49% is pure Tyranny. There should be no country or god to die for. |
| Re: Will You Vote For An Atheist? by AgentOfAllah: 5:24pm On Aug 01, 2016 |
ifenes:I do agree with you, in principle...but we can create an ever-improvable government whose sole role would be to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority. Sadly, the only way to achieve that is by creating a majority with common views as yourself. Otherwise, your anarchy notwithstanding, the majority will still trample on you. Unless you're a masochistic anarchist who doesn't mind dying for nothing. |

ifenes:I will always admire the principles behind anarchy. I just don't see it as practical, since the majority never seek your permission before they invade your territory. The only way to protect yourself; in fact, the only way humans have managed to survive the relentless extinction machinations of nature thus far, is by organising themselves into some form of governed groups with rules which always have some aspects that are tyrannical towards the ideals of individualism. One example is payment of taxes. |
