I was discussing with a fish farmer the other day, he told me DT he is waiting for a batch of his fingerlings to grow a little n he will use them as fish meal for his feed. Is this common practice?

i guess the farmer lacks the business sense in fishfarming,because it is not economical,even if he/she claims to be in fishfarming enterprise for 30years,except what he claim to be fingerlings are all runts. Not common practice, though everyone is creating their own way,but not every way is defined as good.

Oga Robonski, I am also interested in the detailed cost analaysis after your harvest. Just to add; for fish farmers that are not aware,I found out from my recent harvest that the limit of most 50kg weighing scale is 65kg (one cmplete revolution of the pointer + a 15kg deflection). Anything excess of that would not be read by the scale.
This means that buyers could load the scale with 100kg weight of fish and the scale remains on 65kg. So, always make sure the weight are made in 50kg batches to avoid being cheated.

depends of parent stock used,4-6 weeks,shooters or great breed or parent stock, 3weeks.

One thing is to say,another is to do. NOTE- human being would naturally want to exploit another when they perceive urgency or need in your voice or discussion. A good way to block such people is to STATE YOUR PRICE so that those that wont meet price well wont bother calling except, you state negotiable. Those that aint greedy would buy your product. All the best.

Please lets know what happen in detail, when, amount paid & the model of his operation,complains & excuses. Also Nairalanders & fellow farmers, it is good to do business,but better to ask for referral or check background of who you intend to do business with,it could save you some cash & stress. Evaluate the Past expliots of the person onlines,his or her ethics or activities should be check also, is he new on nairaland,past post,google their contact information & get reports etc.,but not to conclude or assume anything on this matter,lets allow the brother or sister involve in the fish oil issue to inform all(house) about what really is the issue,why the delay? when will he/she fulfil the suppose agreement?

Mr excelsior, thanks for all ooooo. I want to give hatching a final shot ooo. Am thinking of doing another production after going through all ur instructions. Am also working on how to get my broodstock from a reliable source and improve water management. I am hoping for the best

Ma, hope you are fully back on your production, i pray it will be a success story this time around.

From my personal experience this tip can be of help to your next hatching operation

1. Acclimatize your broodstock to your water and temperature for at least 10 days before using the broodstock

2. Compare your pH meter to determine accuracy or give to experience person to calibrate for you. [Since two pH dont give exact figure]

3. Always remember that hatchery/room temperature is different from water temperature. The different can make or mar success in hatchery

4. African clarias due to our environment adaptation, takes a bit longer to fertilize and hatch. i.e @ water temperature of 26 degree,almost all the egg became ripe after eleven hour. I prefer 12 hours at 26 o c.

5. Allow water in the vat settle for at least 12hours before introduction of egg

6. Covering of vat during incubation is not necessary provided vat is in enclosed environment and you maintain constant temperature.

7. Before introduction of egg, test your water and adjust the pH and temperature to neutral 7 and 30 respectively. This operation can be repeated every six hour interval. I reset my pH every 12hours interval.

8. Clarias will hatch from pH 6 to 7.5 and temperature from 25- 32. While pH of 7 and temperature of 30 is regarded as optimum for hatching

9. Aerator enhances hatching rate it is recommended

10. Flow through water energizes the egg and enhances hatching rate.

11. Incubation and rearing of larva required similar pH and water temperature for at least the first 15days. Maintain constant flow-through

12. There is always urge to see your larva grow. Please dont overfeed them

You can get over 90% hatching rate and survival rate with these simple observation, God on our side.
