If you're well read on the pogrom & civil war, you'll know they are in no way similar.

The North is just extremely fanatic with everything & likes to have its way by violence or the public institutions.

You can as well head to the north and set a quran ablaze. I'm just glad they didn't take laws into their hands

Ojukwu
Nnamdi Kanu
Linda Ikeji

Your choice. And I can bet you no Igbo man or woman cares what you name your dog.
Dear God thank you for making me Igbo.

The premise of public peace is not so abstract it is not meant to protect just the offensive party but others who miht be caught in the crossfire.

Yes, the police actually stop the display of gang paraphernalia because it can lead to the same breakdown of peace.

I have never seen the Police banning or stopping people from wearing or using whatever personal effects they want because it is a gang item. It is a question of the mental - do I want to wear it? Yes/No. The gangmembers on sighting would ask themselves - should we/I be offended or ignore it? Yes/No.

Which is the same with this case.

Breach of peace is very abstract.

Actually the police have a case of breach of public peace if it is found that the suspect has done this to provoke his neighbors.

And yes the police can actuly hold him seeing as some criminals parading themselves as been offended have threatened to kill him if he is released on bail. He is being held for his protection.
I think you should be banned by Seun or relieved from your appointment as a mod. Why can't you for once be objective and remove tribal sentiment from your thinking? huh, o ga o. Shoro niyen, keep it up and I know some day you will become a victim and nobody will stand for you.

I v right to name anything to my pet and that amounts to no breach of public peace. It seems you guys (APC) supporters have different laws that is known to only u guys.

OMG, I know the next thing you will do is to ban me for telling you to reason objectively without sentiment.

If this man did this in the north then it would be breach of peace & an arrest would be in order.

As an Ife guy, it is like seeing a Modakeke guy taunting Ife while we are both live in Abuja. How does this breach peace & call for arrest when it is a personal greivance because my mind chooses to see offense rather than humour or stupidity?

If the Modakeke man taunted Ife inside Ile-Ife then that would be a breach of peace and the police can step in. Simple!

You're aware he has a right to name his property whatever he likes?

I do not see how the consitution argues or enforces 'home training'.

Step away from your party & politics and look at it from the angle of a private citizen being hounded for his own preference. I hope this never happens to you & yours.
Stop being unreasonable! Not everything is written in the constitution.
Tge Igbo guy's action is very provocative and could have led to civil unrest if the police didn't come in. Yes, You're free to name your dog as you deem fit but you must respect feelings of people around you in doing so.

Your right to freedom to name your dog as you like MUST NOT cause any discomfort to another man. If the Hausa mana had taken law in his hands and dispense jungle justice to that provocative Igbo man, you and your likes will run here to condemn him. Now that he did the right thing by reporting the case, you're talking gibberish of constitutionality.

Do you know how the civil war started?

A white missionary I'm acquainted with named his dog after the community where he serves...and it's here in Nigeria. What does that make him? Everyday people make it seem like every bad name given to Nigeria is actually correct. The police is showing how ignorant of the law they are.

Context matters. You can name a pet after someone you actually like and there won't be any problem. But when you do same after someone you loathe, it connotes different meaning.

9jacrip, well, maybe you have a little time to share with these people. Some of them lack any sort of critical thinking. You are on nairaland, a site that has been encapsulated by those who lack the capacity for objective reasoning. Many of them aspire to live in developed and unrepressed societies but they shy away from according the legal due to everyman.

The law is not a sentiment or moral compass. It does not define right or wrong, just legal and illegal. If you predicate "breach of public peace" on the irrationality and intolerant reaction of one towards the legal action of another, you are just a primal beast unworthy of being called a human with sound thought.

With people like you, the hope of sanity has divorced Nigeria long time ago..

How is the police nowadays determines who needs protectection?
I have always know your hypocrisy sowers everyday but, could never have imagined to what extent..

Millions of dogs in this world with millions of names are no different with naming one Buhari, Chukwuka, Jonathan, Obasanjo, Tinubu, NnamdiKanu, Nancy, Mandela, Bingo, Bentley, Kobi, Mynd44 etc..

But will your hatred for the name as the one the accused bear allow you to reason rationally, No!

HE HAS EVERY RIGHT IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD TO NAME HIS DOG, RAT, MONKEY, CAT, BIRD, MOSQUITO, ELEPHANT, HOUSEFLY OR ANY ANIMAL THE LAW ALLOWS HIM TO KEEP IN HIS HOME ANY NAME HE COULD THINK OF UNDER THE SKY!!!

Sink this into your bigoted skull.

Obviously, your problem like the problem of all those bigots haunting him wasn't what he named the dog but, who he was that named the dog..

(ban me because you could, I couldn't differentiate your reasoning from that of the useless, uneducated illiterates littered at those Police stations)

Are you ruling out that the Igbo man in question may have a good friend named buhari as well?
Everyday Muslims scream that Jesus is not the son of God; what is more provocative than that? Who has been arrested?
Some people are just different in a very sad way.
There is no case here.

The policemen said they have seen the dog during an investigation. They only want to catch it now to present to the court which meams investigations continue.

Ordinarily, he should be released but when there is a threat to kill him which will just lead to another crises, why release him so hell can start?
I presume the police heard those threatening to kill him and therefore knows them? So what happens to those people? Left to go scot free.
Just imagine how you sound

Kid, you can name your pet as you wish and there won't be any issue if it's done in good taste. But when you do it in bad taste, as in this case where there is a feud btw those involved, the Hausa man has a right to object. Here, it was done to ridicule the man. Context and intention matter. Get exposure!

Am I missing something here?

How the hell is the Igbo man supposed to know the Northerner's father's name is Buhari? So what then do we call the dog? Jimmy? I bet DJ Jimmy Jat would be offended.

What's the bigger crime here? Intent to disrupt public peace by the Igbo guy or intent to commit murder by the northerners threatening to kill him...Abeg the police should take a chill pill here jare.

And I'm ashamed to share the same colour of passport with all this tribal bigots running around on NL. I bet their opinions will change if the names are reversed.

Case of giving a dog a bad name just to hang it if you ask me.
