The complainant was a Mr. Buhari, a neighbor who felt offended. Agreed, the dog owner has the legal right to name his pet any name, fine, the northerners are easily offended (which I find appalling), but incitement to disturb the peace is a serious one.

According to the report, the man not only named his dog 'Buhari', his neighbor's name ( probably they were best of enemies), he wrote it on both sides of the dog -- that's overly mischievous, and a threat to public peace.

The location matters (he has a neighbour by that name). I remember naming my dog Hitler in the mid 90s (thinking he will be fierce, dog was as timid as a mouse . . . ended up being stolen and eaten by some neighbour), but that was in Ibadan, it would have been f00lish and insensitive to do that in a Jewish community, German community, even anywhere in Europe, or have a jewish neighbour.

We need to learn to live with each other in peace, even we think twice before naming our kids, checking to see how it will be perceived, that does not mean we do not have a right to.

It is not everything you have a right to, that you exercise your right on.

BTW, I think this should be a civil case, and the guy shouldn't be behind bars for over a week now, but this is a reflection of our immature justice system, that protects only the rich or influential.

The emboldened is synonymous to Olodo.

Please ensure you hand him a ban as well.

So, it's the location of an event that determines if it's right or wrong?

Your logic is warped.

This equates 'Olodo' as well.

You listen to me...

I have closely monitored your semi not-too-mature dislike for the name as accused..

But it won't help all of us to close our eyes and allow our laws and constituted authorities desend into ineptitude. ..
If the guy has suffered mob action, I would have cleared my troath on what befell him and moved on....but could never imagine leashing our laws with specific guidelines on an innocent citizen..

1, Someone has the right to be angry at him to the extent of reporting his conducts to the Police, No contest!

2, Police has the right to investigate a report brought by a citizen against another person on what-so-ever matter.. No contest!

3, Police does not have the right to detain him more than the legal stipulated period without charging the case to court..

Now let me explain this to you, when the case was reported to the police (since it wasn't a criminal offence but a civil one) they should have first establish a case against the accused before arresting him, so as not to infringe on his rights... But No, they are tyrants and must act as one..

Say no to police brutality, NIGERIA Police is a different tribe from all the known tribes of Nigeria....

They have killed, jailed, harassed everywhere with the same or no reasons..

Look at the hypocrites claiming rights and justification. These are same people who supported and justified their tribesmen who went berserk and killed innocent northerners that knew nothing of the crime that their fellow northerner committed.

The igbos hatred for Buhari is second to none. How will a sane person give a dog a whole president and commander in chief's name? This is the after effect of the negative messages Nnamdi kanu preached on his useless radio. He taught most of them to disrespect the president all because of their useless biafra agitations. I suggest this man be locked up and the keys thrown into the Atlantic Ocean. This will serve as a lesson to other unpatriotic IPOB yoots who found mentorship in Nnamdi kanu. How will the Igbo's feel if one names a goat Ojukwu? Biafra will never come sad
As a matter of fact, I think I'd name my next bingo Ojukwu!! Great idea! gringrin

This is very annoying. What does he intend to achieve by this provocative act? I commend the northerners for bringing this to the attention of the police.

This people are really agents of devil or descendants of Satan himself. How else do you want me to explain this. Imagine the amount of blood that will be shed if a Fulani man takes law into his hand and kills the ijiat.

The law should make a scape goat out of this unfortunate devil incarnate.

I commend your mature inputs and your word balance...
Our Police must learn to treat us fair.. No matter who was involved.

Everyonewas on their rights until Police came and misused their's..

The accused has the right to name inscribe on his dog..

The neighbour has the right to be offended and also the right to report him..

The Police equally has the right to investigate but, No they prefer to arrest, harasse and intimidate more than their own constitutional assigned roles..

They should have formed a case after independently investigating the report and swiftly arrest the guy with enough evidence to avoid infringing on his rights before sending him to court..

Yes, it's a civil case and the court is the best place to determine who is wrong or right on the matter.

But, this doesn't mean we won't clash tomorrow... NL things, lol!...

There is no crime here,
1) the guy simply gave a dog he loved a lovely name 'buhari'.
2.) What section of the constution say one can not name his dog any name he like. Is the daura man the only thing that bears 'Buhari'?

3) Ohaneze should stop gallivanting in Abuja and be fighting to release the guy because in the north many
hausas named named their dogs
donkeys after 'GEJ' and heavens
didn't fall. Moreover if the guy were
hausa he would have been hailed by APC and defended by Arewa Elders during GEJ's tenure.

4). Every SE and SSner must condemn this and fight this tyranny to a stand still. The guy didn't break a law. Even the Abokkii DSS couldn't charge Kanu for calling Buhari a pedophile because they knew it holds no water, they avoided that
and charged him for 'treasonable
felony'

5.) Hausa/fulani should be very
careful because this case will
snowball into something bigger if that southerner is killed on southern soil.

IllegalMoney:
—A 30-year-old trader has been arrested by the police in Ogun state for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari.’ The trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, of No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested last weekend, after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari.

Vanguard learned that the complainant reported the case at Sango Police Station, last Saturday, after which the trader was arrested and detained. However, it was gathered that efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed following a clever move by the suspect. The trader, said to be trading in female wears at a popular market in Sango, allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog and possibly eat the meat in order to avoid being implicated. It was gathered that consistent appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail.

Trader denied bail The case, however, took a different dimension two days later when Chinakwe’s relatives went to Sango police station to further plead for his bail only to be informed that the case file and the suspect have been transferred to Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran. A relation to the suspect, who simply identified himself as Chiedozie, told Vanguard that his brother was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail. Chiedozie said: “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari. Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.

” Police sources, however, told Vanguard that the actions of the suspect “were very provocative.” The source said: “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.” As at press time, relations to the suspect were still making frantic efforts to effect his bail while his accusers are insisting that he must be prosecuted. Police confirms arrest When contacted around 8pm yesterday, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details. Oyeyemi later called, stating that: “I have made enquiries.

The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest.

We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” Continuing, he said: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.”

When asked about the whereabouts of the dog that will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police spokesman said: “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it.”
