I quite agree with you on the methodology adopted by the Police on that case. They often usurp the powers of our Law courts by sumarilly prosecuting and passing judgements on accused persons.

But I disagree that this case is purely a civil matter. Whilst the complainant can seek redress under the civil law, a criminal proceeding can also be conveniently instituted against the accused.

On what grounds?

Point out the crime/criminal act, please.

And no commentor above has said anything about the il/legality of the arrest.

Since when did it become a crime to tag a pet any name whatsoever?

Since when did it become a crime to wear the name tag or inscribe the name on the pet's skin?

This is 21st century; anyone can name their pet whatever they choose. And this is the Southwest for fnx sake not the North; I don't see how this is inciting.

Sometimes, I just wonder if Nigerian institutions are meant to serve the North -- see how the police were quick detained the man beyond 24 hours & stepped further by transferring him to a higher station.

Where the lawyers dey o, help me understand this matter abeg.

My dear, as funny as this may sound, the Police are empowered by law to arrest any one who does any thing capable of breaching public peace. You may want to ask how can that action breach public peace?

Now imagine if the complainant had probably out of anger, gone ahead to engage the accused in physical combat. It would have turned out bad, right?

Acts which are capable of breaching public peace are such that, amongst other things, are considered provocative.

Seriously naming your dog is a breech of public peace That means everyone one will be breaching the peace then. We live in a society and everyone has to be tolerant of the other, you can never always have it your way and the last time I checked, naming your dog whatever you like was NEVER a crime.
If I am a Christian and don't like listening to "worldly music" buy have a neighbor who always sings worldly music every morning passing by my house to church, in your context that is a breach of public peace cos my neighbor is not respecting my preferences right

Exactly, this is if they don't end up framing the man or detaining him just to 'teach him a lesson' for Hausa.
Which way Naija?

Typical yoruba, you are afraid of provoking fulanis but East must be provoked at will.
Just an observation, throughout ur posts u kept on addressing ppl as Yoruba this or Yoruba that, yet you are using a Yoruba Monika. Quit the pretence please, why use a particular tribal name just to insult the tribe. I usually don't respond to tribal issue on NL but I couldn't just ignore your comments.

I've seen countless northern Muslims who name there dogs with names such as John, Mathew, Peter, etc.

I confronted one who named his dog John as to why he did so.
His response was; "I just like the name".
This was an educated man in his early 50's.

The igbos hatred for Buhari is second to none. How will a sane person give a dog a whole president and commander in chief's name? This is the after effect of the negative messages Nnamdi kanu preached on his useless radio. He taught most of them to disrespect the president all because of their useless biafra agitations. I suggest this man be locked up and the keys thrown into the Atlantic Ocean. This will serve as a lesson to other unpatriotic IPOB yoots who found mentorship in Nnamdi kanu. How will the Igbo's feel if one names a goat Ojukwu? Biafra will never come sad
I have seen a dog whose name is Obama.. Also, there is this neighbour of mine. His dog's name is Barrak..

I think the dog owner lost his sanity. Yes you can give your pet any name but avoid peace disruption with your decision and action.....................

I agree with you though not totally. The owner never lost his sanity. He equally may name his dog whatever he fancies but also should mind disrupting the peace. Some people can't stand taunt especially Northerners.

Call your goat Ojukwu and I, and Igbos won't bath an eyelid

The stupidity of d Nigerian police has taken another dimension. When does naming a pet become an offence? Don't the so called policemen train dogs? Ask them if they don't name their sniffer dogs. It's understandable that laws in Nigeria are skewed to favor one section of the country. That's absolute rubbish.
I have a pet dog and it's named 'John', what about that? Now am waiting for Mr. John to call for my arrest.

God is watching.

Actually the police have a case of breach of public peace if it is found that the suspect has done this to provoke his neighbors.

And yes the police can actuly hold him seeing as some criminals parading themselves as been offended have threatened to kill him if he is released on bail. He is being held for his protection.
Are you a lawyer? If u aren't, stfu. If u are, it's people like u that sacrifice justice on d alter of technicality.

Infact for arresting the man is nonsense why can they arrest him,had it been that he is a good president the man will not name his dog bvhari. And besides av seen somebody that name his dog his own name,so police release d man and let him go, to name his dog buhari doesn't mean anything......

Actually, the law and morality are inseparable. My elementary law taught me so.

Anyways, contrary to what you think, I have nothing against the accused. What is more, I'm not particularly happy with the way and manner the Police has handled the case thus far. Just felt I should put us in the know that the complainant indeed, has every right to seek redress legally.

let's agree to disagree cos I still say he did nothing wrong in naming his dog Buhari and didn't break any law, the police are in the wrong for arresting an innocent citizen whom they are sworn to protect.
