repogirl: “Shut up!” Barbie snapped. “If you keep this up, I won't let you up at all tonight.”
“Barbie, you care for the guy, and he's obviously really sorry. Just listen to.him, please.” Remi cajoled her calmly.
“This really isn't your business Remi, stay out of it.” She said firmly to him before turning to me. “Dave, I was serious earlier when I said if you pestered me, I'll leave the country… Do you really want me to leave?”
I shrugged, “I don't care…. You can leave if you want to but I will follow you and I will find you,I promise.”
“Don't worry,She won't leave, I can seize her passport.” Remi said with a conspiratorial wink.
Barbie rolled her eyes. “Guys, seriously? Dave… I'm serious here, I'm done with whatever we had.”
“No Barbs, you can't be done! It's not fair to me….you come into my life, wake up these feelings in me, make me want you, make me fall head over heels, you show me what an empty life I'd been living and now you want to leave me…. Sorry but I can't let that happen. I have to see this through Barbie… we have to see this through.
You can't deny that there isn't something here. You know that this is something real.. and back at the hospital you said you could forgive me everytime I said or did something stupid. Why can't you forgive my foolishness now? I know better now…. I'm here Barbie, my heart is bare….it's open, I'm ready to love and be loved, why won't you accept me?
We held each other's gazes but she said nothing. I had absolutely no inkling the thoughts going on in that pretty head of her's.
“Oh for goodness sakes!” Someone called from another apartment, “would you just accept the guy already?”
An elderly lady poked her head from a window from the apartment above Barbie's.
“The guy is drenched and begging, he will definitely be catching a cold tonight. Real love doesn't get any more foolish than that.”
“Hello Mrs K, how you doing?” Remi chuckled as he called at her good naturedly
“Trying to catch a nap.” She yelled back. “and I can't nap with the love story going on there. If I want to watch a sappy romance story, I will turn on my television. Barbara, accept this man already so that i can rest, please.”
I winced, “I'm sorry to disturb your rest, ma’am, Please be patient with us for a while.”
“Yeah...yeah… we were all young and stupid for love once.” The woman said going back into the apartment.
Stupid? Was that what she called it? A few days back I might have felt like that but right now, I didn't really feel like that. Maybe tomorrow when I looked back in hindsight, I might see the stupidity of my actions but right now, I was a man who desperately needed a woman.
Looking back at Barbie's window, I saw she had left and I panicked. “Barbie…” I called. “Barbs!”
She didn't reply and I wondered if she had now chosen to ignore me totally. Maybe she had chosen to wear headphones to shut out my voice and anything I had to say.
“Barbs!” I called again and Remi even joined.
“Can you stop screaming my name and disturbing the neighbourhood?” She had come downstairs, she was right in front of me and I almost couldn't believe it. She held her umbrella over her.
“Barbs!” I exclaimed. “You...came downstairs.”
“Yeah, I figured if you were hell-bent on catching a cold, then maybe we could catch it together.” She said, the smile in her eyes. “Maybe we could both be stupid for love...not that I'm saying I'm in love with you or anything.” She quickly added.
“Yeah, right.” Remi sniggered
“Shut up.” Barbs snapped at him. “And you can go now, the door is open.”
“You see how she bosses me around?” He asked me before turning to her, “One of these days Barbs, I will throw you out of my house.”
“Whatever.” She replied sassily as he walked away.
I couldn't help but smile. Her features were still quite dull but I would take a sassy Barbie over a hurt, pissed to hell Barbie.
“I'm really sorry…,” I said stepping closer to her. “I'm sorry about….”
“Dave, it's okay...I've heard everything..I already knew you were arrogant and conceited but I still went ahead to like you, didn't I? I'm still not totally certain how it happened myself…. Maybe it's a subconscious instinct of mine to heal wounded birds….but healing is a two way thing and I realised it this morning after you said those things...it was sort of a wake up call for me also. I had some emotions which I hadn't totally dealt with. I had gotten over my ex but I hadn't let go of the distrust I had felt after. It might have been what's made it hard for me to sustain relationships. No one had been trustworthy enough and then I met you...something about you…”
“Barbie…” I wanted to reassure her that she could always trust me but she continued.
“No, listen Dave…let me finish please... I've thought about it deeply. When I came to the hospital, I really didn't tell you those things so we could patch up and be together again. I had just wanted to apologise for my attitude and tell you it would be better we remained friends as I wasn't sure I could trust you but as usual things went out of hand and I got angry all over again when you were being your conceited over egotistical self.”
I cleared my throat, feeling guilty as charged.
She sighed, “It's so easy to see other people's flaws and be blind to one's own but now, I see it… I have distrust and some lingering anger issues Dave.. I have also have a quick temper and it's even quicker when someone I love does or says something hurtful to me. Dave… we are going to disagree from time to time, either one of us will act up and maybe even say hurtful things, are you sure you are in for the drama?”
“Barbie…. You are flawless to me… and yes, I'm in for the drama and everything. I'm in Barbie, what I feel for you is enough to overcome whatever drama we cook up. I've fallen for you Barbie, deeper than I've ever felt before.” I told her, closing the distance between us. I reached out a hand to take her arm and drew her to myself. “How exactly does one fall in love in a week?” I asked her. “Because it sure as hell seems like I might be in love with you.”
She smiled, “You remember what I told you the first night we met, just before we left the club?”
I had to think for a while before I remembered. “That I shouldn't fall for you?” She smiled, nodding. “I should have taken the same advice for myself if I'd known you would be so dangerous.”
“I don't think any amount of advice could have saved us from this.” I said.
“You think it was predestined?” She asked. “You did say something about the universe trying to bring us together.”
I laughed realising my folly at actually believing the Universe would have something to do with that. Maybe I was even more conceited than I knew.
“Nah, something tells me my friends had something to do with that. Simi, Irene and Franklin were in a suspicious meeting this evening and my gut tells me they had been involved from the way they'd acted.”
“Wait...Simi?” Barbie asked, ‘I noticed she and Irene were giving me curious glances all day. You think they were behind everything?”
“I have a strong feeling they were. But they are not the point now…. The point now is, I've realised how stúpid I've been all these years. I've realised relationships can last, love does exist and I plan to find it...maybe I have found it.”
We held each other's gazes. “You think this is love?” She asked.”as in the real deal?”
“I really don't know , I've never felt it before so I don't know how to compare. But I sure as hell am eager to explore it and I would love the both of us to explore it together.” She said nothing as she kept staring me in the eyes and I had to ask, “So...can we explore this feeling together? I really want to see where it leads.” I said pulling her even closer.
“On one condition.” She said, flashing her mischievous smile.
“Anything.”
“You pay your debts.”
“What?” I frowned.
“You still owe me half of that wager you made with your friend on the first night we met.”
I laughed in surprise. I had totally forgotten about that. “Done!”
“Hold on…… I don't really need cash, so you're going to have to pay in kind.”
Our gazes met and she didn't have to explain what she meant, the twinkle in her eyes said it all.
“I always pay my debts in full.” I said bringing my voice down a notch, making I deeper for a sexier effect. “Now are we going back to your apartment or are we to remain here, catching our deaths when there are so many fun things we could be doing… paying off debts?”
She giggled, she was still holding the umbrella over us and I silently wished she would throw it aside and put her arms around my shoulders, just as mine were around her waist.
“But.. you have to agree that it's quite romantic, isn't it? You drenched, holding me like this...me holding this umbrella over us.”
“Just one thing missing though.” I said and she frowned.
“What’s…..” she began just before I took her lips with mine in a kiss. Her umbrella dropped as her hands grasped my shoulders.
The rain dropped on me unhindered but I really didn't care. All I could think about was how I'd missed her soft lips and how much I wanted to be with her. I didn't want us fighting so much and I was sure now that I was at peace with my feelings, I could make this work. We could make this work.
“Can you two just take this thing to your apartment already? It's getting boring.”
We broke our kiss Barbie was giggling and I was laughing as we both looked up at Mrs K who was looking down at us from her window.
“Sorry, Mrs K!” Barbie called to her.
“Yeah... seriously, you should adjourn upstairs.” Remy said, also watching us from Barbie's room.
“Shut up, Remi.” Barbie told him.
“You seem to say that to him a lot.” I noted.
“Yeah, for some reason, he thinks his opinion counts.”
“I like him though.” I said. He'd been instrumental in getting Barbie and I back together.
“Me too, he's an awesome friend.” She said.
“And they are both right...We should take this to your room already because…. As I said earlier, I'm ready to pay my debts now.”
“I’m sure you are.” She picked her umbrella before turning to me with that smug smile of her's. Linking her hand in mine, she said, “Let's get to it then.” ******
