The French team of 1994 was not all about Cantona. David Ginola who I rate just below Romario as the best striker in Europe was also in that team.

I don't like bringing up clubs players played in to judge them.
Over the years we have seen below average players turn out forthe best teams in Europe.

Remember a certain Thomas Gravesone when he was signed by Real Madrid?
How about Pascal Cygan at Arsenal. Bebe and Luke Chadwick at Man utd.
Yaya Sanogo would not get into my street team but he is earning a living playing for Arsenal.

Take away hard tackling from Roy keane's game, you will see a below average footballer.

“Roy Keane’s passing was probably the best I’ve played with, in terms if getting it in to the forwards’s feet”, said Rooney to reporters.

Didier Deschamps
Back in the 1990′s, flamboyant France and Manchester United star Eric Cantona derisively labelled Didier Deschamps, the captain of the 1998 World Cup winning French team, a ‘water carrier’.

The current Les Bleus coach, who used to play as a central defensive midfielder, did not for sure have the skill and panache of a Zinedine Zidane, Cristophe Dugarry or a Youri Djorkaeff.

But his importance to the side lay in the fact that his constant presence in front of the back four enabled the likes of Zidane and Djorkaeff to focus on their attacking game, and paved the way for the French team’s first and so far only ever success in the competition.

Employed in a similar role at Juventus, Chelsea and Marseille among other clubs during his career, Deschamps is a true success story, maximising his potential for the best of his team.

http://m.sportskeeda.com/football/world-class-water-carriers-the-importance-of-holding-midfielders

That was why Zidane referred to Makélelé as the Engine of the Galacticos.
LOL... You subtly agreed with me that Didier Deschamps lacked the skill and guile of better players around him like Dugary, Zidane etc...

Although I never would want to undermine the roles the old school DFM played for their teams.
Am judging them purely on their technic and passing abilities of the new school DFM these days.
Dunga also falls into that category of old school tackling machines with no skills DFMs.

Rooney is not the most intelligent guys around but even this one is a new low for him.
He rated Keane ahead of schooles in passing abilities?

Rooney is so out of his depth on this one. Lol

That is like saying I am comparing Sergio Busquets on the ball skill level to that of Xavi and Iniesta.

What Xavi and Iniesta do, when it comes to skill and passing, Busquets can not do. What Busquets does when it comes to shielding the defence, Xavi and Iniesta can not do.

Pirlo can not shield the defence like Gatusso. Gatusso can not shield like Pirlo. However, Buy me a Gatusso first before you buy a Pirlo. Without a Kaita, Mikel would not perform at the level he did in 2005. These shields are very important.

Sadiq Umar is taller than Ginter but he is an amateur when compared to Ginter. Sadiq is not stronger than Ginter. As for Free Kick Amuzie ballooned, that has to do with experience. Many up coming players rely on power that skill. That will come with time.

As for five yards pass, yes under pressure, players miss it a lot.

Yes, the Germans pressed the living day light out of us. It remember someone say, why did Amuzie not pass that ball to Mikel. I asked the person, "Did you see the three players around Amuzie?" Difficult to think under those conditions.

I feel a compact set up would help but, the coach had his plan.
My point is that they are professional footballers, they should be able to deal with pressure. What is point of their training regimen if not to play under pressure.

If they don't want to play under pressure, they should stay at home fiddling with their thumbs and not on the pitch.

That is what I said about Barcelona players when Liverpool put four passed them. They could not deal with the pressure. The likes of Messi and Iniesta should forget football. LOL.

It is a difficult game and pressing is difficult to defend against. Watch Arsenal on their good day when they flog teams like Chelsea.

Barcelona were not physically in tune when they played Liverpool. Their coach admitted just as much.

Two seasons ago, I remember Redbull salsburg whipping Bayern Munich 3:0 in a pre season game. They pressed and strangled Bayern to death in midfield because they were sharper.

Is it not obvious that Siasia has nothing left up his sleeves? Failed at u20 world cup, failed at Beijing 2008,failed to qualify Nigeria for Nations cup, failed to win the Olympic gold a second time! This guy is a colossal failure! It's time he take a bow. Bring on Amunike let's try a new hand or should we wait till Russia2020 before we start preparations.
I swear, Nigerians have a big problem. So it is Siasia's fault? Siasia told Dalung not to release funds on time? Siasia told Arsenal to hold back Iwobi? Siasia told Man City to hold back Nacho because you know, he hates good things. he lost virtually 6members of his first team yet we got this far and yet you want to hold him responsible? I know you thought that we would not qualify for the second round but even after we did u are still complaining, tufiakwa. Did you even watch that German game? we created two good chances for that big tall fool Sadiq and he messed up big time, how can you miss two glorious chances in a semi and expect to win? or you wanted Siasia to come and score the goals for us? we could have easily won that game if we were well prepared and if we had our full strength. was it also Siasia's fault that Azubuike and Etebo were not available? so Amuneke who could not qualify for the under 17 tourney is now better than an Olympics bronze medal winning coach?

No, I don't mean fast game, I mean the way we use to control the game against fast playing teams.

Just play slowly and frustrate them.
you can't play a slow game with quick passes. a slow game requires that you posses string players that can hold the ball, and that was what Siasia did or tried to do with Sadiq but he goofed big time. I have to blame Siasia for not switching Mikel to the DMF role since he could hold the ball too but that'd because he thought that Sadiq was useful no matter how small. this loss was totally on Sadiq. he couldn't pass, couldn't press, even when he did, he couldn't take advantage. he couldn't score, he couldn't hold up the ball. he couldn't draw fouls. he could only get in Mikel's way

Well, every1 here is right with what ever criticism and standpoint.

Goldfish80 is seeing the negative side of the team while TheGoodJoe is taking the positive side of it. More like a glass of water being "half full" or "half empty".

I told someone before d Germany game that if Nigeria should win that Gold then God of soccer must really be unfair to those teams who were better prepared and motivated.

This team only got as far as they potentially can. We think we can repeat Atlanta '96 with this kind of team? If this team had succeeded permit me to say dat the NFF and Sport's ministry wouldn't have learnt their lessons.

This team right from kick-off was a disaster in waiting but thank God for the doggedness and Nigerian spirit which saw them through to how far they got. The truth again is we dnt deserve that final.

Several peeps have criticised certain players and hailed some. I just to take out some positives from this team, go forward. I mean to the Super Eagles.

Oghenekaro Etebo is definitely now a Super Eagles player. His being able to play as a winger, AM, CMF and also a striking (at some of in d Sweden game ) has set him apart.

Imoh Ezekiel has staged a major claim to a winger's position in d Super Eagles. He would b added to our pool of wingers which already has Moses, Simon, Musa, Iwobi & even Etebo.

Sadiq Umar started brightly in d tourney bt lost composure at d knock out stages. I laughed when peeps said he should b playing basket ball.My take on him has d potential to become a great striker by he is nt yet in the class of Success and Iheanacho. God enough he is in a fantastic club like AS Roma. We expect his rapid development. The Super Eagles coaches should keep a very close tab on him. He may also b handed a Super Eagles call-up.

Azubuike Okechukwu is another player that proved his mettle. He will definitely give Onanzi a run for his money. He , just like Ndidi, has joined d competition for d DMF position in d Super Eagles.

Stanley Amuzie to me is a major revelation of this tourney. He has staked a major claim to d LB position of d Super Eagles. He is ahead of Madu.

Shehu Abdulahi has showed dat though he is nt a natural RB he is still our best RB option for now for the Super Eagles.

Troost Ekong to me was our most efficient player in this tourney. What would we have done without him? He has made a great statement that finally he has matured enough to b a Super Eagles regular. Good replacement for Injury prone Balogum/ Omeruo.

Sally Popoola, though my gifted height wise, is a baller. He is a very creative midfielder. His introduction in d Germany brought creativity to d midfield. This lad needs a consideration in d Super Eagles more so as we dnt have creative CMFs.

Emmanuel Daniel has proved he is good enough as one of the substitute goalies of d Super Eagles. Akpeyi has lost out.

For the other players they were just a share waste of time. Seth Sincere I must single out for his age and fact that he still plays in d academies. I wish he signs a professional contract soon and develop as RB at nt that CB he plays. Amino Amur was overjoyed by Siasia. Us man Mohammed nt creative enough.

A bronze medal would nt b bad as a consolation .

I agree with everything else you said except these.
Sadiq Umar did not start well and did not end well. we were just lucky that our AMF covered him then, when Mikel who is.not a goalscorer moved into that AMF position we saw just how good he was. AS Roma is not known for developing strikers either, they play more with wingers and tall strikers for crosses alone but the issue is that this slow guy can't even nod the ball. he missed a clear header too. I am not even looking in his direction at all.

No, he won't give Onazi a run for his money, he.has already displaced Onazi. he is vying for the spot with Ndidi right now, Onazi should just is more like a squad player now.

Did we watch the same Stanley Amuzie? the guy is not better than Madu and Taiwo is currently the top scorer for his club in Finland so he should get another run in.

We have Odubajo who is.by far the best option we have there. Sheri was not comfortable in attack at all. He was defensively solid but modern football requires attacking fullback.

Troost Ekong should not be a replacement for either, he is better than both of them. with Awaziem coming up too we might just have some decent defenders for the first time in a long while.

Recheck, after he came on, we didn't even cross the centre circle again. he brought zero creativity to the game just that the fans liked his stature and probably confused him for Ezekiel.

Sincere was absolutely brilliant considering his lack of experience. he is very very fast and calm. he can dribble out of defence, he is just like Pique without the errors. He is a modern day ball playing CB and if he moves to a good club, expect something big from him.

First of all, it is pathetic calling a young teen, who lost his father not long before the tournament, gave his all for the team a big fool. You can show more decency than that.

Second, the Germans were up to the challenge. What Sadiq Umar did was short of a miracle. He was the only man most times up against the string experienced German defenders.

The Germans held the ball and kept possession. It was mostly Sadiq Umar and Mikel doing most of the pressing.

Look at when Junior Ajayi came in, no disrespect to him but he could not cope with the pressure. The Germans swallowed him and he caused impact.

We created chances because of the hard work Sadiq put in. So calling him a fool and the problem is not fair. He helped with a lot of pressure.

Controlling and holding the ball in that game was difficult because of the Germans pressure. Only Mikel found a way to keep the ball comfortably.

So abusing the young man is not fair.
Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by chrisooblog: 12:25pm On Aug 19, 2016
you are being unduly harsh on sadiq. yes the german game wasn't his best but the young man gave his all like goodjoe said he had to do double work pressing while at the same time trying to hold up play. it's not like he had a stinker in his previous games infact so far in this olympic football tournament he has been one of our better performers. cut him some slack he will get better.

Ekong like i said earlier has improved massively will definitely stake a claim for a starting xi shirt in the super eagles.

not yet sure if azubuike has displaced onazi yes he has a better passing range but defence shielding ability needs work.

yes amuzie was poor defensively surprise surprise but his attacking forays were decent excluding the poor german game. i'm really worried about the leftback in the super eagles cos madu if who we all thought was better than amuzie couldn't displace him in the u23s who do we now use? taiwo? not so sure osaniwa maybe.

I still maintain Ekong's performance has only boosted his chances for the Super Eagles starting line-up and nt dat he is now better than Omeruo and Balogun. Omeruo or Balogum would still have put up a very good performance if they were in this Rio Team.
Ekong's experience at competitive levels really reflected in his performance. Sincere and Amuzie hu were d two least experienced in d back line struggled.

I have always been an apostle of "experience in the defence". If that team had either of Omeruo or Balogun to partner with Ekong at CB we would nt have conceded some goals we conceded in this tourney. Siasia wasted that slot he gave to Akpeyi. It should have been given to a CB like Balogun. Ambrose or Obaobona also would have paired with Ekong better dan what Sincere did.

I had wanted he and Awoniyi to play with the Flying Eagles team, since they are both still very much eligible. That would havel really given them a good development opportunity. Ekong impressed me a whole lot and I hope he continues developing. I enjoyed him when he tried to push the game from the back. His highline control was brilliant.

Indeed, he is ready to put a fight for the Starting place in the Super Eagles.

Amuzie showed lots of Stamina. That is something that he has in abundance. He runs up and down the flanks comfortably. He lacks the composure to create dangerous chances for the attack. He can whip the ball with force. He just needs to work on his accuracy.

I expect the current Super Eagles coach to play with more stability and composure. I see Madu fitting in also. With Oshaniwa still capable of helping, I think our left back position is covered. I hope the coach calls Oshaniwa and carries a fair screening for the left back role.

Sadiq Umar has speed and the talent to become a top rated striker. He needs experience and training to perform regularly at the top level.

Seth for a make shift defender was okay and deserve praises. People just look at result and avoid the work put in. Seth did not play his natural role, so we should expect mistakes.

There were a lot of positives to go home with.

Some do not watch the battle that goes during games. It took Mikel almost Twenty minutes before he understood how to cope with the pressure. We are talking of maybe the most experienced player in the competition. A player who has battled players like Yaya Toure and Schweinsteiger.

Yet, they are blasting an amateur, 19 years old footballer battling recognized pros like Ginter.

Sadiq Umar performed better than the German striker, I think Selke was lost in the pockets of Ekong all day. Selke is a striker who played pro football since 2013. His team dominated the game and he was under less pressure.

Sadiq Umar was better than him in that game. Let the keep abusing. Those who abuse the guy should watch the work that boy did in that attack.

Even the commentator said Nigeria gave good account of themselves

Nigeria Olympic team Atlanta saga 'dirty' reveals sports minister.

Nigeria Olympic team leaving Atlanta after they were stranded for several days

by Samm Audu

Nigerian sports minister Solomon Dalung has hinted at shady deals behind the country’s football team being stranded for several days at their training base in Atlanta, USA, before they finally made their way to the Olympics in Brazil.

It is expected that after the Rio Olympics a high-powered probe will be initiated by the minister to uncover the truth behind the drama, which caused Nigeria international shame.

The Nigeria team only flew into Brazil barely seven hours before their opening match against Japan.

And Dalung said on a television interview Thursday that the episode revealed “quiet dirty” details which those involved cannot defend themselves against when they are confronted with.

“The Atlanta event was quiet dirty and some of the actors (involved) cannot stand before Nigeria (to answer to these charges),” Dalung alleged.

“The event of Atlanta was another attempt to rip the country off.”

Dalung said he has a receipt from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the chartered flight that eventually flew the team from Atlanta to Manaus when he alleged that Delta Airlines confirmed to his officials that the flight was their own “contribution” to the country’s Olympic campaign.

Nigeria call up 5 Rio Olympics stars, Etebo snubbed but Osimhen in.

Etebo not called up by new Eagles coach

by Samm Audu

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has called up five players from the Rio Olympics but with top scorer Oghenekaro Etebo overlooked just as Nigeria U20 star Victor Osimhen got his first Eagles call-up for next month’s AFCON qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo.

We first told you

The players from the Olympics are goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel, defenders William Troost-Ekong, Shehu Abdullahi and Kingsley Madu as well as captain Mikel Obi and Imoh Ezekiel.

Youngster Victor Osimhen, who will sign a professional contract in January with German Bundesliga Wolfsburg, has been handed surprise call-up as well by the new Eagles coach.

The match is a dead rubber, as both teams have been eliminated, but Rohr and the Super Eagles are using the game as rehearsal for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series Matchday 1 clash with Zambia in Ndola in October.

The Franco-German, named Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles by the NFF two weeks ago, has called up three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and eight forwards for the game scheduled for the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday, 3rd September.

Captain Mikel, whose sterling leadership of the Nigeria U23 to the Bronze Medal match of the Rio 2016 Olympics has drawn global applause, is joined in the midfield by the energetic Ogenyi Onazi, Belgium –based former youth international Wilfred Ndidi and Israel –based Nosa Igiebor, who has not featured for Nigeria since missing the cut for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Emmanuel Daniel, who has done his reputation no harm with some breath –taking reflex saves at the Olympics, joins Carl Ikeme and Ikechukwu Ezenwa to fight for the gloves, while home –based Jamiu Alimi finds a place amongst Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Chidozie Awaziem, Abdullahi Shehu, Musa Muhammed, Elderson Echiejile and Kingsley Madu in the defence.

Rohr, a former defender, has also opted for a strong attacking line, with assistant captain Ahmed Musa leading Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Victor Moses, Imoh Ezekiel, Odion Ighalo, Brown Ideye and youngster Victor Osimhen.

All the players have been directed to report in Uyo on Sunday, 28th August 2016.

TheGoodJoe:

With Oshaniwa also, I think our back can cope.

You couldn't have said it any better.

I am one of those few people that believe Sadiq Umar put up a very descent performance cos I never expected too much from him anyways.
I am glad u mentioned he needs EXPERIENCE and training to grow. And that is exactly what He needs now.

Talking about Seth Sincere when peeps criticise him I usually ask if they know he just turned 18, nt yet a professional league player and also not a CB?
For his level of exposure he did ok. Aside the momentary errors he makes that boy is nice ball passer. He also to me should have been with d Flying Eagles where he would have added more value.

Etebo out may be due to his injury. But how come Alex Iwobi and Azubuike are nt on that list?

Jamiu Alimi of Kano Pillars would on the list while Kenneth Omeruo is snubbed. Isaac Success and Imho Ezekiel left out while Victor Osimhen is in.

Nosa Igiebor that is on a declining curve is selected ahead of fast rising Alex Iwobi?

This people don come again o.

We lost another Olympics Gold after we lost focus - Garba Lawal

Nigeria Olympic team coach Siasia

by Samm Audu

Nigeria failed to repeat the historic feat of winning Olympic football Gold 20 years after because the team lost their focus, according to former Nigeria star Garba Lawal.

Coach Samson Siasia’s team will now have to battle Honduras for bronze on Saturday in Belo Horizonte after they were beaten 2-0 by Germany in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Garba Lawal was part of the team who made history by winning Olympic Gold in Atlanta in 1996 and he told AfricanFootball.com the country’s team ought to have focused on repeating this feat rather than be distracted from their goal.

“Not many people knew what we went through as a team when we eventually won Gold in Atlanta. We were not paid for several weeks and were at the mercy of the hotel we stayed at in Atlanta over unpaid bills. But we did not allow all that to take us away from our target, which was to be Olympic champions,” Lawal told AfricanFootball.com

“We all knew that once we won, all that we did not get, we will be given. And that was exactly what happened.

“It is rather unfortunate that the present team did not work like that and before you know it all their problems were in the media.”

Garba Lawal further told AfricanFootball.com the team will have to fight against less fancied Honduras if they were to leave Brazil with a bronze medal on Saturday evening.

“Honduras will fight notwithstanding the heavy defeat they suffered at the hands of Brazil and if we think we only have to show up at the game to win bronze, we will be seriously mistaken,” warned the ex-international, who is now on the NFF technical committee.
