I have observed that a lot of Nigerians are ignorant of some basic facts about the UK before choosing to study here. I have met so many people whose desire is to stay back in the country for a few years before returning to Nigeria. However, they get disappointed when on arrival they discover that there are no immigration programmes designed to keep them in the country beyond their studies. Hence I thought I should educate us a little just so that you ahead of time. I have been in the UK for 7 years so I am speaking from experience.

The UK is a lovely country, people here are respectful, you will get on with little or no problems at all. However, IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY to study abroad and IF YOUR INTENTIONS are to stay back to work for a few years before returning to your country. THEN THE UK is a wrong choice. During the Labour government students were allowed to stay back for two years after graduation but the Conservative Party (currently in Gov) is heavily ANTI IMMIGRATION. Therefore YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO LEAVE THE UK AS SOON AS YOU GRADUATE except you get married or get certain types of jobs (Trust me, YOU WONT GET THOSE JOBS within ONE YEAR), you will be kicked out of the country. ONLY students whose primary intentions are to study and go back to their jobs, husband, rich parents, wife or other commitments should come to the UK for studies. THE UK IS VERY SENSITIVE TO IMMIGRATION RIGHT NOW. they don't want IMMIGRANTS in the country anymore.

For those who want to stay back and work for some years after graduation, you SHOULD go to CANADA, USA, SELECTED EU COUNTRIES, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND and others. These countries have immigration programmes to allow you stay back in their countries before returning to NIGERIA, if you want to.

Please note that I am not discouraging people from coming to the UK, as far as I am concern, the UK is a friendly country with good human right. You will love it here but just beware that they are no longer VERY WELCOMING TO IMMIGRANTS. I think they are tired of people coming to their country, it is a good place to study if all you are after is the certificate. However, from my recent experience with Nigerian students (always trying to stay back to no avail) I just thought you should know that there are other countries out there that support or have immigration programmes to support ex students who wants to stay back in their country. True fact. After spending over £12000 for Masters still you wouldnt be allow for PSW. I know people doing their second Msc in uk just hoping things would work out. The all come home looking for jobs. I don't know why people still go to uk for study and think they can stay after to work. Have never encountered a Germany, Australia, Usa or canada graduate coming back to nigeria not to talk of lookin for job so far he/she graduate with a good result and a relevant degree there's always opportunity that can't be said with Uk graduates. If u lookin for greener pasture abroad after study dont go to uk.

You sound informed. Yes, the tuition fees is just too expensive and immigration is a no go area, they don't want you to spend a single day beyond your study time but Nigerian students keep coming to spend their hard earn money due to LACK OF INFORMATION. The truth is that there are so many countries out there that will allow you to stay for some years after graduation and if you get a job during that time, then you are allowed to stay indefinitely.

Honestly, if you have enough money to spend for oversea tuition fees then you should go to countries that will allow you to stay. The longer you stay in a country, the more experience you gather and the more your chances of getting a good job. The UK does not give you that opportunity. I know so many unpopular countries where you can go and have A VERY GOOD LIFE AND JOB AFTER STUDIES. The UK is good for RICH Nigerian kids looking to get a degree and return to their country as soon as they finish.

it all depends. I wont be a citizen of canada today if not for my UK masters degree. So many of my friends took up citinzinship in Australia too. Our MSc from the UK gave us high scores in immigration programs of those countries.

M.Sc from Nigeria will also give you THE SAME high score when applying for Australia and Canada. How many people are lucky to move to other countries from the UK after their studies? 1 in 1000. But if you study in Canada, you are given an automatic work visa of 2 years on graduation which gives you a very high chance of getting a job. After the 2 years visa, they give you a permanent residency. UK M.Sc is worth it but people should just be aware that they are required to leave after graduation. That's all.

I am 100% sure that Canadian Federal Express Entry immigration programme will give someone who has a masters from Nigeria, the same score they will give to another person with a UK masters. All they require is a degree that is equivalent to Canadian degree. If you use World Education Services or other company, you will discover that a Nigerian masters is equivalent with a UK masters. I am 100% sure of this.

Mr Bikat,

I must commend you for a job well done in passing across this valuable and priceless piece of information.

It will shock you to know that so many are still ignorant of UK immigration laws. I've been aware of UK harsh immigration laws since Cameron came into power but some are not opportune to know.

Lalasticlala, please push this topic to front page so that a lot of people will be saved from unnecessary stress and agony. Thanks!

Timing is essense. How would it have been easy to arrange msc transcript from nigeria..ask current guys trying to apply for express entry what they go through coupled with the rising exchange rate and selection point.

Also while in canada, having an msc from a uk university has opened does for me. canadians and australians respect uk alot. Its the motherland to them. Autralia even has a special visa for post grad of some specific uni, not sure a nigerian uni is listed in that program.

Also, the pgwp does not gaurantee a job in canada just like psw visa never gauranteed a job in the uk. Do you know how comoetitive it is in getting a good job in canada? canada has an extremely small widespread economy. Despite the removal of psw visa, guys that went to excellent uni's in uk still get jobs. A younger relative just got a job with woods engineering even before completing his msc from ucl.
Another from unisalford got a job with accenture before grad and these companies are sponsoring their visas.

Whereas i know nigerians with msc degrees from usask and u of c still hustling for jobs in canada. Now they are running out of their psw visa and don't even have enough points to qualify for express entry. its even almost impossible to qualify for express entry with anything less than a masters too in canada.

Irrespective of whether you graduate from US, UK, Denmark, Australia e.t.c if you are good, you wont have a problem migrating to other coutries in the world.

I was lucky to be one of the last set of students to apply for Tier 1 PSW, and that gave me time to get a company willing to sponsor me.

I live in a city with 2 good and I've met a lot of Naija students over the years. Like the OP said most of them came with the intention of staying spending over £20,000 during their stay, but most of them had to leave immediately after graduation. I keep telling my friends in Nigeria, DO NOT come and waste your money for MSc in the UK IF your intention is to stay back, it just won't work. In UK you've got like 0.1% chance of staying back.

Please try countries like Canada, US and Australia

Come to Canada. No long thing

I came to Canada in 2010, finished my masters in 2012, got job in my field in 2013, apply for my permanent in 2014, got it in 2015, awaiting my citizenship by 2019.

The only country you can transition from being a student to becoming a full citizen in less than 10 years.

Peaceful, hospitable and friendly people.........

Yes that's true, UK masters are well respected but you will be kicked out as soon as your done so why not go to places that will allow you to stay while also gaining a well respected degree from that country.

Your argument is a lil different from mine. Yes UK degrees are well respected as are degrees from Canada, US etc. My point is that the immigration policies are not WELCOMING, simple point. I like to talk with Statistics, how many people get a job as soon as they finish their studies - very very few. From my experience, the longer you stay, the more you understand the system. So you will discover that those who have stayed for years will go on to obtain professional certifications, training etc that makes you more employable. I even know people who started working as volunteers and interns after their studies and with those extra experiences they got jobs.

Bros, I am so such of what I am saying, is it not better to go to a country where you can get a degree and a stay instead of a place where you will be required to leave after graduation? With a UK degree, u will still need years of proven work experience, the right age, good IELTS score etc in order to be eligible for Canadian immigration. Trust me on this one. Thanks

Nothing guarantee you a job ooo . I moved to the UK from the USA with good years of experience and US degrees with intra company transfer .. After one month i said let me just checked the Market , even with my experience and USA degree , UK agencies were like great but you dont have UK experience ....3 Months of chasing jobs i kept hearing that . As i was not really looking i face my work ooooo . a year later i said let me test the market again , this time my phone will not stop ringing ..........I was amazed at what having one year work experience in the UK did . ....So this job market its funny and no guarantee
