I can actually relate with this well...

B.Sc. Holder with good grade collecting 18k.....still with strict jackass, everyday lashing for poor performance

as in eh.

is it the one who told me that my salary would depend on the number of briefs gotten which means no brief no salary.

I was expected to work 8-5 daily. which I didn't mind but I can't work when I don't get paid. even the appearance fee which he said he would pay would not pass a thousand naira. I didn't need anybody to tell me to run race.

I shake my head for employers of labour though. people are told to go into entrepreneurship. where is the start up capital for it.

That's your own thought. The average black man prefers pay to position. You didn't understand the OP. She didn't come out out say I am a manager earning 25k. She stated her work schedule and mentioned the pay, Meaning she feels the pay does not match the work load. Which is true. Understanding is key!

Fact is different from fiction. Take her assumption about zenith bank for instance, from afar she has concluded that they are raking huge profits (under this same recession), why at the same time sacking some of their workers and cutting salaries of the retained ones. However, any logical, informed and altruistic person would know that a bank like zenith is not finding things easy since the inception of the current administration.

Ask her what's her company net profit in the last financial year. And what's the current size of her company, their turnover and gross income in the last six months. What sector of the economy are they operating in.

Things always look rosy when viewing from afar or outside until you get closer or inside then you will know the true state of things.

If her output is truly greater than her earnings, then I had expected her to know that the best thing to do is to give the company a condition to either increase her pay or she resign. No sane company will willingly love to lose its human asset.

I have always advise every employee to make themselves an asset to their companies, when that is done leverage on it to make demands for promotion/pay rise and an opportunity to be a partner/director in the company - a la MKO Abiola.

If the salary is less than than your expense, then you shouldn't take it.

If it is more you could suggest to the company that considering that you would be investing your whole life into the company, you are interested in profit sharing after your basic has been paid.

N25K?

Is this on a weekly basis or monthly? If it's the latter then that's really low. Or are there any perks to go with it? i.e. Transportation, medical allowance, etc?

I started with 15k as a graduate in abuja 2010 trans to office was N250. Lebanese nearly made stop serving GOD just to pls them..

No business finds it easy in any recession. I don't know much about zenith bank but there are some banks still declaring profits. Brother forget, all these cost cutting measures are just to make sure shares and dividends add up. I said that earlier. You are trying to conclude every organisation pays according to structure. It is a fact that many employees are underemployed in this part of the world. What's the competitiveness of Nigeria companies with their fellow ones in the same industry?
Yea, No company wants to loose an asset but not in a time where talents are not scarce.

This is not even pay me and only me sef. I was earning 25k at the job I worked after leaving school and trust me, I don't think my salary ever took me past the third week. All my salary went back into my transportation, feeding and bare essentials. And that was when we weren't facing a bloody recession. Trust me, 25k should not even be minimum wage.

Before I got my present job I was working in a private school also making 25k and my working hours were 7:30am to 5:00pm. If there is a staff meeting, we will be at work till 6:30pm. The salary was not enough to live on. Now I am making more than that but the employer is owing me salary. Being an employee in Nigeria sucks. I can relate to the OP's frustration.

I really want to scream but ofcourse everyone seems to be in the same situation, who will console the other. The economic situation of Nigeria at the moment is really pitiable. We as the citizens have been holding on and managing, praying it gets better but it only seem to get worse.I am writing because I have come to realize that some sectors are abusing this untold hardship in the country and using it as an avenue to greatly enrich themselves. In as much as we understand that there are no jobs in Nigeria, many unemployed yet qualified graduates are roaming the street, the few ones working now are been taken for granted, used and given peanuts at the end of the day with reason been that the company cannot afford a good pay due to the economic situation.I am trying to understand how this fits in to some people. There are companies that are making massive profits despite this economic recession yet they are still slashing salaries,I can't help but to ask where does the profit realised at the end of the day go to?A typical example is Zenith bank which we read slashed workers salaries,to be realistic if a bank as big as zenith can slash despite its massive profit margin wat will the other small companies that barely make enough pay their staffers.I want to share an experience I had few days ago,I went for an interview and after that,I was called to say I did averagely ok but they would want me to work in a bigger position as the Head of Administration.I was delighted,we talked at length and I was told my work days were Mondays to saturday, with 8-7pm work time for a salary if 25,000naira.I am a graduate,I don't seem to understand why the pay has to be so poor, thereby making the job seem like slavery.I want to give my best,I want to add value,I want to be supportive to this firm but I am not motivated by the pay.I can't be working yet be hungry, worse still as head of admin for 25,000.Please Employers I want to appeal to you all to have a conscience. Its very unfair to want someone to do so much yet get paid with little or nothing. The Economy is bad at the moment which we all know but don't use that as a yardstick to frustrate your workers because we also buy things from the market and function too.I also want to plead with the present Administration to please comeup with ways to help the Nigerian Youths. Many of us are willing to work but no jobs, while we also want to be self employed yet still no capital to start even at the smallest level. To all those Employers of labour still treating their staffers nice,I want to commend you and pray that you won't have any reason to fold up.Thank you. Please pardon any grammatical error,I am open to correction.

So frustrating. That's a one man's business that's why. Most businesses are like that. It's so sad that they want to pay you something horrible. It's demoralising.

Hmnn efemena this is a very serious and bad situation.25k per month

Well that's how Nigerian employers are
they slave their employees to build their dreams
So my dear what you'll have to do is spend more on necessities while at the same time looking out for better job offers or learning a skill. So here we go

Because of your kind of income I suggest you live in a face me I slap you environment ot house where you pay 2k per month for house rent
feeding. Budget 5k per month on feeding. Meaning whatever foodstuffs you have to buy it has to be at the confines of 5k.that means you will buy 1derica of rice 250naira
250naira derivative of beans
Garri etc

Forget about owning dstv.those are liabilities
Forget buying a car thats also a liability that will be eating up your finances
If you have a neighbour that works close to your office clinch to him or her and request for assistance to be dropping you off to work and trek the remaining. That way you have curbed transportation expenses
Recharge card for the month should not exceed 2k
Instead of spending exhorbitantly for hair just do braids of 3k that can last you for 3 month's
Pay your tithe if you're a Christian
Then Save the remaining So you will use it to start up a buisness of your choice

It's well

I never understood why people would just up and off themselves ( suicide)

Thank you for enlightening me.

Anyway it's assumed its for a single individual.

What if he falls ill. 2k recharge card a month? I couldn't even wrap my head around that rice and beans calculation.

It is well.

Very true. Knowing your worth truly matters.

That was how one employer hired me as an Accountant in his medium scale telecoms firm and offered to pay just #30k. l negotiated with him to make it #40k because of my transport and the work time which was also 8am to 7pm and he refused after 3 meetings with him.

On the last one, l told him l won't do the job after l had worked for one week while we still negotiated. Since he refused to add a meagre #10k, l told it to his face that l won't continue working with him. He preached on how he wanted me to stay and liked the way l had adapted to their system in just one week but l told him l was done and he offered to pay for the one week l had worked by the end of the month and bid me goodbye.

I moved from the city to another and secured a job in a firm that pays almost three times higher than what he offered but to my shock, the man called me after almost two months and told me to come back.

I told him l would only come back if he could pay me #90k plus #5k transport allowance. He hung up. Knowing your worth and not settling for less could pay off but at the same time, know when to say no because you might be in dire need of the peanut as at that time.
Wow your story is inspiring. Not a lot of people have the mind to quit in this current economy.
I know a lot of people that work for peanuts including Saturdays and they can't even quit.
Who do you blame in this situation? Them because the lack ambition and initiative to not work as slaves or other forces that force them to be where they are stagnating. Its a pity the way things are.

We are all victims of the current economic recession however it is always better to set sentiments aside and write facts not fictions as you have done. The zenith bank in question has been subsidising taxes deducted from its staff and decided to discontinue with the subsidisation in response to the present state of the economy. Note that this different from a salary slash and in any case Nigerians will gladly accept a salary slash in times like this as opposed to staff retrenchment.

On the other hand you may renegotiate the offer made to you or reject the offer and apply for another role. Criticising an employer on nairaland may not necessarily add value to your aspirations and desire.

Don't be offended okay! As I said in my foremost post on this thread, I share in your pains and that of others who may be in the same situation like you. Also, I neither propagate nor practice staff exploitation. But fact remains that your company may not be doing well as you have thought, thus the underpayment.

Anyway, send me your CV: talentsponsor@yahoo.com .I am not promising you anything, but never say never.
