Geneva-based energy firm, Puma Energy, has started delivering bitumen to its terminal at Calabar in Cross River in a venture aimed at assisting Nigeria to rebuild its dilapidated road network.

Puma Energy’s Global Head of Bitumen Mr Olof Klintholm made the announcement in a statement e-mailed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.

“This is an important milestone for Puma Energy because Nigeria is a key focus market for us as we keep building our global presence.
“The delivery shows we can deliver bitumen on specification and on time anywhere in the world,” Klintholm said.

He explained that the shipment, made from neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire, was made under a joint venture with WABECO Petroleum Ltd., trading in Nigeria as P.E. Bitumen Resources Nigeria Ltd.

“ The cargo was delivered by MT Acacia Rubra, which completed discharging in the early hours of Sept. 5.

“The delivery comes at a critical time to assist the Nigerian government in rebuilding its road infrastructure which is a catalyst for the country’s economic development.

“Puma Energy has the world’s largest system of bitumen ships and terminals and we offer customers globally, a wide range of products that meet local specification requirements at a competitive price,’’ said Klintholm.

According to him, Puma Energy is helping to deliver new and safer roads in many countries by assisting governments, highway agencies and construction companies in sourcing and supplying the bitumen they need for major construction works.

“Puma Energy looks forward to working with construction companies in delivering high quality bitumen to their projects around Nigeria.’’

Nigeria has about 32,000 km of federal highways most of which are unpaved and in deplorable shape, according to official records. (NAN)

...kindly help to console all Nigerians with this piece! We need to be reading good news at least once in a while to avoid losing complete hope in PMB Administration.

But..... I think I read it somewhere that; there is Bitumen in Ogun State!

I've not seen the work of Dr. Fayemi as a Solid Minerals Minister at all!

Modified: I will rather support the importation of Rice! Nigerians can't do without eating Rice in Day, whereas the Nation can survive without importing Bitumen.

We have surplus and untapped Bitumen in Nigeria, but we have very limited quantities of Rice available for consumption!

I'm ain't wailing, rather critiquing..... not everyone that critiques the PMB Administration's Policy is a Wailer, some are Critics with good intentions, thus they critique not criticize!

This must be a wrong news, perhaps they meant Niger Republic and not Federal Republic of Nigeria, because there is a very huge untapped bitumen deposit in Ondo, so why importing? But again, there was a time Nigerian government wanted to import GRASS! Crazy things do happen in Nigeria grin

Nigeria has the sixth largest bitumen deposit in the world with most of the reserve found in Ondo state. Why importing them?.. The federal government must place an embargo on this one. We are supposed to be making exports of this same bitumen to other neighboring countries, not even we dreaming of importing them from a country like Cote d’Ivoire. We have it in commercial quantities and a sure alternative to oil and diversification of the economy.. The minister of Solid minerals must act fast and order for an embargo on this. But please oo why importing bitumen when we have in excess?

We want a restructured Nigeria where our resource endowments will be maximally utilized and not lying dormant because we all fold our hands and expecting the FG MONTHLY allocation.

We have natural resources in all states which is of importance in the global market.

Is this the change we were promised? Nigeria has a very large deposit of bitumen, why are we now importing? Are you sure this government knows what its doing?

What is most amusing is that while the presidency has announced the closure of borders on imported goods, its is going back to bring into the country something we have in large deposit. No wonder we have crude oil, and still importing petroleum. This is a disappointment!
