If this news is true, then I am highly disappointed in Apc led federal government. Why import what you have in abundance. Our Economy won't grow if we still want to import bitumen despite having a huge deposit in ondo state.

This is madness. The bitumen deposit that runs from Edo State through Okitipupa, Irele and Ilaje Government in Ondo State is reputed to be largest in the world. You don't even need to dig to see Bitumen in ilaje area of Ondo state where it is highly concentrated in commercial quantity. Such huge quality untapped yet we are expected to hail this as good news?

Re: Bitumen Shipment To Nigeria By Geneva Energy Firm Commences by Fawklicant: 3:28pm On Sep 09, 2016
Nigeria is importing bitumen of all things to import when Nigeria has 90% of the world's bitumen deposit in Ondo state among others? Bitumen that is so much in abundance that it flows to the surface and is a common sight in streams and forests in these areas?

Now I give up on Nigeria! Somebody is feeding fat off this contract. Common sense is indeed uncommon among the ruling class.

Ondo state has the highest deposit in the whole world!

Infact, the town was named after it: Gbeleju-looda. (Ooda is Bitumen in Yoruba language)

Nigeria has no business importing Bitumen.

You won't be surprised that the same people importing this bitumen might be behind the lukewarm attitude towards exploring our own reserve. And guess what? One of them might be the owner of the reserve in Cote d' Ivoire, I mean Nigerians.

It was foreigners that discovered oil and started exploring it.... Nigerians wouldn't have started exploration... there are minerals in the north but the president is looking for oil there grin grin

Funny how most of us are just beginning to see the degree of rot and absurdities In the system we operate in Nigeria.Importing Bitumen from Cotdevoir,South Africa and Venezuela when we have over 40billion barrels in our backyard?. And we wonder why Naira keeps falling against dollar?...SMH

Apart from the Bitumen in its raw form, which oozes out from the ground in Agbabu, Ondo state, Nigeria also has tarsand, (Oil sand) in the Eastern Dahomey basin stretching from Lagos thru Ogun to Edo and Ondo states. From Oilsand, Bitumen can also be extracted.

Apart from its use in road construction, Bitumen can be converted to SYNCRUDE,synthetic crude oil...just like the normal crude oil; this is how Canada generates millions of dollars yearly..in fact over 60% of the canadian revenue comes from the tar sand business.

This fact is not hidden from the Government all these years, what is lacking is the political will...I hope this administration would match words with action in this regard.

All this una talk self, bitumen this and that in Ondo, largest this and that after canada, every other person runs away immediately they hear about Nnamdi Kanu proposal, I only like the courage of people of SE on standing on their own if they allow them, all this claim of natural resources here and there in Nigeria is just a propaganda, Niger delta oil is the coco and reality saving Nigeria

Modified: I will rather support the importation of Rice! Nigerians can't do without eating Rice in Day, whereas the Nation can survive without importing Bitumen.

We have surplus and untapped Bitumen in Nigeria, but we have very limited quantities of Rice available for consumption!

I'm ain't wailing, rather critiquing..... not everyone that critiques the PMB Administration's Policy is a Wailer, some are Critics with good intentions, thus they critique not criticize!
please give PMB more time and send your criticism to the appropriate quarter. PDP spent 16years in power and had more than enough time to make sure we are self-sufficient in bitumen production but never did anything about it. Same with with petroleum sector. Despite the abundance of crude oil in Nigeria, we export crude oil and import all crude oil products which is very insane and shameful. Don't blame PMB for the negligence of a group of people who for 16years wrecked everything!!!

Once when Nigeria was becoming self-sufficient in wheat, the US threatened Nigeria over balance of trade deficit. So buying Bitumen when we have an abundance of the stuff locally is probably commitment. Nigeria government is possible appeasing certain formerly helpful powers. For instance, the deriding of the Chinese UAV's, recently evident in certain online media publications, was acknowledgement to the Americans that we know what side our toast is buttered. France also was probably a great help to the current party when in opposition to the former party in power. Certainly, Buhari was not shy in turning to France so humbly and publicly in the fight against terrorism. France has big plans for Ivory Coast at our expense and the Nigerian government knows this but realpolitik can be a bitter game.

Don't we have it in Nigeria.
Re: Bitumen Shipment To Nigeria By Geneva Energy Firm Commences by 19naia(m): 5:05pm On Sep 09, 2016
Ondo state taught pupils as early as primary school that the state has Bitumen as a major resource. I suspect Ondo state is not the only state in Nigeria with Bitumen resources.
So again progress waiting to happen while money is thrown at the wind for uneccessary imports. It seems the cost of importing would be enough to develop a bitumen extraction and supply chain in Nigeria while making employment for many in the Nigeria population. Divert the money spent on imports of bitumen to the extraction and distribution of Nigerian bitumen. Even if it delays road projects, it will speed up economic growth and stability, and out of that growth and stability will come the means to sustain road projects over the very long term.

People always say the cost of producing refined petrol and other things will cost more in Nigeria than importing, but the truth is that not developing the local production is the most costly in the long run. It is cheaper in the countries exporting it to Nigeria because they have well developed centers for production, production support and distribution support while some even subsidise to enable competitive export prices.
Nigeria should do its own and work out the details later, otherwise instability will continue creating a cycle of sufferering that is more costly than doing the needed for local production regardless of how costly. The money not spent on exports stays in the economy and continues the cycle of local development, whereas payments for imports sends the money out of the local economy while many go unemployed.

When this is factored in, it is actually better for the economy to make its own refined petrol and bitumen even if the cost is higher than imports. The local production will provide so much employment ,revenue and eventually surplus can be channeled into export with subsidies. At one time Nigeria was operating at a loss to import fuel. It is still better to operate at a loss to export the same fuel produced locally. Even China subsidizes its own local production to keep the export prices low for international customers. A diversely productive economy will then be encouraging to foriegners who will be able to bring in the means to eventually make production cheaper. A key strategy is volume of production such as the volume of production planned in Dangote mega refinery. The production volume will be so high in one refinery alone that it will be hard for any non subsidized producer in any country to sell cheaper with added shipping costs. The start up cost is the major expense factor but is a neccessary growing pain that all great nations went through.

Although the high cost of local production comes from start up, the start up costs are easily offset by international grants and local government subsidies which are all worthy sacrifices towards real development. Dangote mega refinery sef is recipient of nearly $1billion development funds from foriegn sources. Nigerian government should be paying into the develoment as well, all that fuel subsidy for imports from past should have been going to local production refineries being built and todays problems would not be so much. Priorities.
There is no local production that is too costly. Every local production job lost to paying for cheap imports ,is a high cost to the economy. Every local dollar in Nigeria paid out for import of things that can be made in Nigeria, is a high cost to the economy because those dollars cease to circulate in the nigeria economy and thus cannot add to the size of the economy nor add to the available money for local investments that can pay a Nigerian employee.

Why is bitumen not sourced in Nigeria when Nigeria has a sincere plan to stay in the business of constant road maintainance and development?
