This district, which is located in the heart of Lagos, is a concentration of many ethnic groups in Nigeria. It is largely populated by illiterate people and is one of the poorest and toughest neighborhoods in Lagos.

Have you REALLY experienced the real AJEGUNLE?, yes there is a large concentration of low class citizens in the area but it is not largely populated by "ILLITERATES" , I am not from Ajegunle but, i have met a number of smart heads that was born and brought up in that vicinity, you need to explore more!

He is quite right, I felt the same way when I saw the shomolu part, but you would notice he said Ikeja division(even though, I don't know what that means) and a search on Shomolu on Wikipedia also brought the same Ikeja division

My own issue is why do you have Shomolu on the list when the main area you are talking about is Ilaje, but then you still feature the Ilaje on the list...

That's pure bias

And llaje exists as a local givernment in Ondo but other fishing settlements populated by llaje people anywhere is also referred to as llaje hence llaje community also exists in Bariga and Makoko in Lagos and other places..

So that reference or lumping of shomolu as llaje slum is off point because llaje slum is in Bariga..

Anyway alot of people lump shomolu and Bariga together

When we move some gala selling immigrants back to where they came from, be sure we would have no slum.

I know you haven't gotten over the obvious. Lagos is a SLUM and their is not slum in SE. We have bad roads just like other regions, but we don't do slum like your wasted lands.

the sad thing is wealthy folks and politicians are still exploiting these slum folks using them for low paid labour hence why the politicians and wealthy people do not want to get rid of slums.

these polluted and over populated slums can be get rid of easyly and it's dwellers relocated to a more better houses and environment, all the government have to do is build affordable rooms or houses and charge them reasonable rents and acumulate even more revenue.

but No they just want to use them for political purposes like Thugging, killing of their opponents, exploitation of young and poor slum girls sexually, rape of young children ( girls and boys) and some times blame the slum young men and teenagers of the crimes that they the politicians and the Rich have commited send them to jail some times even murdered to save face or cover up their( the Rich and powerfull) crimes, its mind boggling. and very sad.

What part of shomolu is in Ikeja and the slum is around where?

Edited: shomolu is in Ikeja division of Lagos (makes no sense though, as they are both local government)

I am pretty sure Ilaje shouldn't be on that list, we have larger slums that should occupy that.

Aba is not a slum. The govt failed to provide good roads and sanitation , that's all.
The city has good housing, planning, with a high percentage of people who aren't poor.

Have any of you guys done Community Outreach? The problem with slum dwellers is a mental one. When your environment is so run-down it affects your thinking. However when people try and help you out of It, you fight them out od cynicism and fear of change. Even if Government built low-cost housing, it would end up the same. Almost all of the low-cost housing I've seen looks rundown no matter what in a few years' time ans the inhabitants don't bother to maintain it but scream for government to keep their homes clean. Even abroad it's the same: go to the bad neighbourhood, fix the lights in the local park amd the next night the lights are broken because criminals need the place dark.

Slum dwellers have to help themselves. In Lagos I've seen people volunteer (and i have volunteered) to go into slums and clean or do school renovations. Just a few joined us. Yet it's their school. People will be cleaning up the beach access to your island and you will be there, sitting nonchalantly. Then complain that you didn't get enough help. If we opened free libraries in the worst slums, how many parents would make their kids attend? At least you need basic knowledge of English and Maths to trade. They need it to be great but their apathetic nature won't allow them stir themselves to help. I remember seeing the day i I watched some men sit and laugh and gist as one of them was tampering with the newly constructed drainage on Orile Expressway. Later when it floods, they will scream "Government ignores us!"

He didn't specify, and besides do you know any slum in Ondo state that would make top 20 in the world? What is the population of ondo state? The standard of living in ondo state isn't so bad as well. So even if he mentions ondo state which i doubt, then he is still wrong with it.

There are large population of SE in Festac. Festac is on lock down for SE.

Yes, it is. It is industrial population. Signifying the massive industrialisation of the area. None of the slums in Kenya, Lagos, India not even the largest slum in world, Mexico topped the list of the most populated. It is Onitsha that is far more developed and cleaner than them all.

The only problem with SE is bad road, we don't do slums. Even Aba that has the worst roads in the entire SE doesn't have any slum comparable with the smallest slum in Lagos. I once saw a report that says that any child born in the SE have the highest probability of not being born into a slum.

Its probably what a relative of yours who came to lagos must have told you, that lagos got beggers, no doubt. What you don't know is people come from other states/neighbouring countries to lagos to beg! just like how some folks come to sell gala and lacasera.

Now about where they live, I mean your gala selling folks, if they don't live in shanties or under bridge and festac, where then do they stay.

11. Ilaje (Nigeria).



Residents of Ilaje live on the lagoon. This sprawling slum is one of Nigeria’s notorious dark spots. People here live under sordid conditions. You will find many poorly fed children playing about in this slum.

op ilaje is a local govt... Which part of ilaje are u referring to? And there are abt three places in lagos with its name as Ilaje. Pls clarify

You've got a pretty sound brain. I am impressed with your simplified depiction of slum life pattern. To help those people out takes more than give them money or building them houses. You must first take the slum out of their mind and character before physically relocating them from the slum.
