While she went to get the food,l initiated a convo with the friend.

''Women!!!'',l began,''they lack courtesy some times. I'm thebachelor,the youngman under her spell'',l said as l extended my hand to shake him.

He received me with a smile. ''l'm Pwajok. Pleased to me you'',the friend said.

''Oh!'',l exclaimed. ''You are the Pj. She's told me alot about''.

''Yeah. And she's told me alot about you alot too. The way she talks about you l think it is her that is under your spell'',Pj said.

''l guess l'm lucky'',l said with some sense of pride.

At that moment Nonye arrived with the first tray of food.
''What are you gentlemen gossiping about? You are not supposed to talk each other until l introduce you'',she said as she dropped the tray and disappeared to get another.

''She told me you are having troubles with those guys here's',Pj said using his head to point towards their direction.

''Oh! Not quite. We are just rivals'',l remarked.

He just smiled.

''l stole his umbrella to help a girl he was toasting. He didn't seem too happy with that. And he wants his umbrella back'',l said coolly.

Pwajok also noticed the irony and couldn't help but laugh.
Nonye was back with another tray,then left immediately for the last one.

''Well,if that's all he wants then there's no cause for alarm. You can give it to him here'',Pj said to me.

I never really thought about that. And it actually made sense to me. If the umbrella is all he wanted then he can have it here. No point meeting him at that place and time,l thought.

''You right you know'',l said to Pj.
He nodded in affirmation.

''I will be back'',l said as l picked up the umbrella and approached their table.

Troubleshooting! 20:00 comes early.

It didn't go as expected when l got to their table. The three gentlemen gave me a hostile look like l just interrupted a very important meeting. If l could guess what they were thinking,it was how to throw me through the window.
The ladies were more friendly though. One actually welcomed me with a smile. If l wasn't in love with Nonye,l might have tried my luck with her sometime later.

I left their table and went back to mine.
Nonye was already back with the last tray.
''What happened? Why are you still with the umbrella?'',she asked with a very inquisitive look.
Pj also sat up and it was clear he was curious as well to know what transpired.

I was amused by how serious both of them were. So l decided to play a little.
''Relax people. The youngman had a point. Can we eat now please,l'm starving'',l said as l made to start eating.

''Pj tell this boy to talk now before l stab him with this fork'',Nonye said with all sense of seriousness.

''Hey!!! No fighting. I will confess. Ok,my rival said he couldn't be walking around school with an umbrella so he won't collect it here'',l told them.

''Well then,we can leave it with security and he can go get it whenever he wants to leave'',she said.

''l suggested that but the dude was adamant'',l said.

''What do think Pj. Isn't this a case for your people?'',she asked Pwajok.

I was already eating now and had a mouthful when l asked,''what people?''

''Man O' War'',she answered abruptly.

I was immediately curious and interested. I wanted to know more.

''No,Nonye. We can only come in when they threaten or attack him'',he told her.

I continued eating while l watch both of them decide how to handle my issue.
Everything was funny to me. How they were genuinely concern and trying to protect me.

''You know'',l drew their attention,''you guys ought to stop treating me like a fresher'',l said.

''Ain't that what you are?'',Nonye replied.
As both of them began eating.

We decided,or l decided,against all the wisdom of Nonye,to take the umbrella to where the dude asked me to bring it. Under one condition though,she and Pwajok were to come along and it has to be by 5pm,not 8pm.
Nonye even suggested we go with the police.

''So Pj,you are something of an anticultist?'',l asked.

''Yeah,something like that. We try to bring sanity to the system'',he said with an air of authority.

''He doesn't look it,right baby?'',she asked me looking for support.

''Well,l wouldn't know. I'm a fresher,remember?'',l said to her.
She just dismissed my sarcasm with a wave and continued.

''PJ is the first friend l made when l got admitted. He's such a nice guy and a gentleman. When Ruff or whatever his name is threatened to deal with me if l didn't date him,l reported it to Pj. He had assured me he'd handle it and he did. Pj is presently the second in command of Man O' War'',she said as she smiled and looked at him proudly.

I took another look at the man and l was impressed. He looks so humble and quiet. He doesn't act with the bravado l expected to see from someone who fights cultists. He was calm,and certainly looked intelligent.
I was inspired by his aura,l admired him.

''How do you do it? How do you check them?'',l asked with genuine interest.

''Well,you know,with the police and the school authority behind us it's a pretty easy thing to do. Once we get a report about you,or it's confirmed that you are a member of a gang,we raid you and hand you over to the police. We give your name to school authority and resuscitation awaits you. It's that simple'',he replied casually.

''So boo,you want to be a member?'',Nonye asked joking.

''Yeah,if you'd feed me'',l replied.
She fetched some rice and plantain with the fork and attempted feeding me.
I shifted my head backward,grimaced and said,''nah!!! The real food,not this.''

''You are spoilt child'',she said me.

After thebachelor's secondary school he spent some four years at home before he had admission. So he was pretty mature by the time he was admitted into the higher institution.

Before he got admission though,he had a reputation on the street. Gangsterism was sprouting on every street around him and youngmen his age became increasing violent. They ''obtain'' their peers and walk about knives and charms.
But he was not caught up in the trend. Not because he was a good son - he wasn't - just that he never liked acting or operating with or in a group.
He preferred ''running things'' alone.
He had a reputation of always involving in a fight against any form of bully or intimidation.
Most of these fights were not directly his.
But he just couldn't tolerate a friend of his,or a family being bullied by a group of boys because they were in a cult.
He couldn't stand it,hence he always collided with them.
And they came to respect him for his guts and bravely.
That was before he got admission.

Still waiting

When we were done eating we decided to relax and gist at the canteen for a while. At this time,Ruff and his entourage had left.

''Baby let me tell you a story'',Nonye began,''this happened when we were in our second year. I was working on my laptop when it just went off and refused to boot again. I immediately called Pj. He asked me to bring it to his place so he could take a look. This was about 6pm. I usually wouldn't go out by that time,but l needed to get my laptop up to complete my work. I got to Pj's place and in roughly 30mins he brought my laptop back to life. I didn't know what he did but l was glad. As l was about leaving,guess what happened next?'',she asked me.

''He grabbed you and threw you on the bed'',l guessed.

She just gave me a funny frown and continued,''without warning it started raining heavily. Hen!!! I was confused. I sat down back. Pj quickly made me some tea and we started gisting. I was silently praying the rain would stop. But my prayer went unanswered till about 10pm when the rain subsided. It was still drizzling when we stepped outside. I knew getting a bike at that time was out of the question. So we walked to the end of his street looking for cab,but in vain. He suggested walking me me to the hostel,but as l looked at the distance we would have to cover and the route we would use l realized it was too dangerous and risky. Beside,it will be unfair and selfish of me to allow him walk me to the hostel and walk back alone. So l decided l'd take my chances with him.'',she paused to see if l was following.

If l wasn't before,l was definitely following now.
''So what happened?'',l asked with a wry smile.

''We went back to Pj's place. He offered me his mattress and inconvenient himself by sleeping on the cold tiles. I really felt for him. Although,l couldn't sleep until morning. Pj earned my respect and trust that day. Not many men have such self control'',she said as she looked at him with pride.

Not me,l thought.

I was awed,surprised and amused all at once.

I turned and faced Pj,''she's kidding right?''

He laughed and replied,''Nonye is like a sister to me. It was easy not to think of that''

No wonder you ended up in the zone,l thought to myself.

''Would you have attempted anything if it was you?'',she asked me.

The question was amusing to me.
''By all means'',l immediately replied.
She pinched my nose so hard that l thought she wanted to cut it off.

''How did l end up with you this boy? You would end up spoiling me'',Nonye said.

Nonye kept bring up gists. Her voice was like music to my ears. When she smiled at me my kneels weak. Her eyes. Big and piercing. My heart jumps when she looked at me. And l felt butterfly in my stomach any time our body touched.
And from the dept of my soul,l knew l love this woman.
I could kill for her,and if necessary die for her.

Nonye,Pj and l all agreed we will meet at the female hostel,by 4:30 later that day,then proceed from there on our mission - the return of the umbrella.

I was cajoled by Nonye to accede to that arrangement but l knew l wouldn't honour it.
She had suspected that too and insisted on sticking with me till it was time.

I had to solicit the help of Pj and gave her my word that l will be there before she freed me.

Nonye started buzzing my phone from 4pm to remind me of our arrangement and my word.
By this time l was already on a solo mission to return the umbrella.
I reassured her l will be there as planned.

I got to the area the dude described for me. It was mainly a student residential area and l quickly located his lodge.

I pushed the gate and stepped into the compound.

The lodge comprises of 10rooms,5 on either side. It seemed to me that music was blaring from almost every room because the noise was too much.

I noticed 6boys and a girl sitting at the extreme end of the compound. They were smoking hemp and drinking spirits. I saw some bottles of syrup on the ground too.

I recognized two of the boys. There were the boys with ruff at the canteen earlier today. The rest of them l haven't met before.

I approached their position,and requested to see ruff. I told them l came to return his umbrella.
None of them responded and they carried on with their activities like l wasn't there.

I repeated myself once more,and when l got no reply still l turned to leave. At that point one of them shouted at me and quickly circled to my front to prevent me from leaving.

''where you wan go? Caman go back there'',he said as he pushed me back.
Now l was getting angry,but l knew that wasn't the right emotion at this time so l controlled the anger.

I was ordered by one of the guys to sit on the floor. When l refused,the same dude that pushed me played my legs from behind and l landed on the ground.

I kept saying to myself,''relax. Don't react. Relax. Don't react''.

I sat there for about 10mins when l heard the gate opening behind. I turned to see who it was. It was him,the Ruff himself.

Immediately,one of the boys stood up and gave him his chair when he got to us. They also gave him a wrap of hemp and lit the stuff for him.

He sat like a boss and stared at me for a while before he spoke.
