Is there any such thing as a permanent job?
I will always put my family first. I'd personally pick a job that will bring be closer to my home regardless of the renumeration.

Go for the contract job because of:
a. The source. If u reject this job, your ex boss may not recommend you for better things in future and may see u as unserious.

b. U are married and common sense detects that you place ur family on ur priority list when making decisions. Its a plus you'll be closer to them.

c. The salary is better and there is the possibility for renewal or permanence. Im sure ur ex boss can also press buttons to that effect for u.

Finally, even if the above is nt obtained, two years is enough to save and plan. Start putting in applications elsewhere by the time u are one year with them. You will definitely get a job.

My dear,
It all boils down to your future plans, how soon do u want to start up something on your own?.
No job is permanent, every job has its ups and down. Just plan on saving for a brighter future,.
Be it a Govt or a permanent job, no one is worth dying for..

Lastly, I would advise u take the risk, sometimes in life you need to leave ur comfort zone in search for greener pastures.

All the best in your decisions.

In my opinion, though I have not had any contract job before but I can still speak from the genuine beauty of my heart to you, presuming am in ur situation.

First, the life of work is short while the life of family is forever (generation to generation). U said u are married but working in diff place. I guess d contract job if it will make u be together with ur fmly n make u to add more value n teaching to ur kids, care n love around ur husband, I think u shud take d contract job.

Aside from the pay (money is not everything) but the joy of scriptural n God fulfillment that a woman shall leave her parents house and clinch with to her man n they will become one. Which means, be together, live together under one roof n raise their kids in oneness. If d contract work which still have an assurance of becoming perminant one will make u be with ur fmly to raise a fmly standard n future for ur fmly, pls pick it.

In ur current job, going by ur word dt, it is not too sure due to d company; in order words, there is no perminancy assurance.
To the place u reside n d kind of peeps there, thank God for that but also know DT, they are kind peeps better Dan where u reside now everywhere.

Let me hint u wit few words i said to my sis who was recently in d kind of ur case. She lives in d north working n her husband in southwest. I said if u let work, ur master program rip u joy of fmly, then it is left for u. D life of work is short but fmlyhood is forever. Why won't u n ur husband not keep having dispute when u r not 2gda. If he practice infidelity dont blame him. I told her a lot of DT. Now she is with d fmly n she said, she has missed a lot to teach her kids but she will make it up.

Above all, Put all decision in d hand of God and let it make it for u. Even if d contract work is short, u can HV a plan of setting up ur biz n executive it with what u will save from the contract work before it elapse. And besides, if God can make this contract work for two years, who told u He doesn't have a plan for u after this two years?

Do take care ma.
God will be ur final decision.
Don't mind my writing n typing, am doing from my phone.

babacares:
Hello All,
I have to create this account for anonymous purpose because some of my colleagues are on NL. Here is my situation:

I just got a permanent job in Lagos with N4.8m/annum ( i had to relocate from where i was working before i resigned), i have been working in this environment for a little more than a month, i enjoy the environment, the people are friendly and willing to share knowledge and information, my 2 major issue with this office is their exit policy which got me scared and thinking of leaving before long.

I got another offer in another location where my family is based (iam married) for N6m/ per annum (net) through one of my former boss, he is putting pressure on me to accept the offer (he likes me alot while i was working with him), my issue with this job it, its a CONTRACT job (2 years and renewable) with a government parastatal, though he said they are most likely going to convert to permanent before the end of the 2 years.

Though i have not done contract job before, im kind of confused about it, and then the security of the job, etc. But the money/offer is tempting.
I just want your advise based on people with experience with contract jobs.

NOTE:
please dont mind my grammar
Thanks

Lala, mod please i need more comments
it is not wise to speculate on a temporary job dat is not gauranteed n prone to circumstancial change. wat if u choose d contract job today n u got terminated after 7 months u cant predict d future.
stick to ur current job.

you better stay where you are now before I change it for you.
Re: Confused About Contract Job And A Permanent Job by enioluwaselore: 11:39am On Sep 16, 2016
I would go for the option of staying in your current place of work for the reasons below.
1) The remuneration difference is not appreciable enough to take this risk.
2) The fact that the new job is with a government parastatal and on contract is a red flag. The job could wind down even before the 2 years based on change in govt policy or govt.
3) Relocating your family after just one month of staying in your new job and altering their own schedule is gonna really be something.

You didn't tell about the exit policy in your current place that would make us make a better informed decision, all in all its still your decision to make. Goodluck.

Guy contract is contract and for the fact that its federal govt, it can be terminated anytime. But permanent job can only be terminated upon death, resignation or retirement. U know all these things I guess. So make proper assessment b4 u decide. Money is always a temptation but think on the long run

I made more in 6 Months as a Contract Staff than I have made in 1 year and 4 months as a Permanent Staff. cool

Finally, there is no such thing as a Permanent Job.. cool

Exactly !!! Always follow the money grin

Contract all the way. I can't even stress it enough. Permanent jobs offer absolutely no job security.

For the sake of your family, take the contract, save the difference and think of any business to invest on after one year. Time and money spent maintaining two pots is too demanding.
Re: Confused About Contract Job And A Permanent Job by compuseun: 11:47am On Sep 16, 2016
Hummm if I were in your shoes, I would stick to the one at hand which is secured (permanent). What of if at the end of 2nd year d contract job is not renewed? What of if there was a change in management in that govt parastatal? What of if there was a change in the management of that parastatal and the contract was terminated and awarded to another organization? I will advise you to think very well. Look beyond the pay angle.
Re: Confused About Contract Job And A Permanent Job by sisisioge: 11:49am On Sep 16, 2016
This is really easy!
1. Go to your family.
2. Opportunity to earn more.
3. You are already scared of the exit policy here so u would definitely leave within the next 2yrs,why not leave now.
4. Accepting the offered efforts of your friend/former boss will earn you better goodwill with him. Hence, more is coming your way.

5. Oga go before NL babes who want to defraud you wife starts sending you green lights.

Good luck.

you didn't state the condition of the exit of your current job, but for a married man, stability ids very critical so, i believe you should stay where you are now till the situation is clearer for you at the other side.

cheers.

The issue here is not the job but family.your decision should be base on the distance and vacuum your absence might create in your family not the pay

Im surprised that its the money/offer thats tempting, not even the having to be with your family while you work.

My advice is stick to ur current job only if you have plans to relocate your family soon. Or else go back home ☺

What's the exit policy in your current office? You said they are friendly and ready to share experience.

Now you have no idea about your new offer. You have no idea how often payments are made.

If you make research, you will find solutions.

don't believe in promises when it comes to jobs.
the exit policy is too stringent includes bonds, etc (dont want to state details for obvious reasons), but the company (permanent) and a stable company

Poster, first I must say congratulations that you have a permanent Job right now in this recession and you have another opportunity as well.
However to help you make your decision, you need to provide more details on "the exit policy of the permanent job" and the "job role/details".

These two things will affect your choice.

1. Both Jobs pay rather well, but the contract job not only pays well but it also allows you to be nearer to your family.
2. However with the contract Job there is no guarantee of continuity as anything can happen.

The big question is: Which of them gives you a Job role that is relevant to your passion/career? A role you would love to gain experience in and be proud to put on your CV. A role that gives you an advantage for greater opportunities. A role that would not make you dormant and left behind.
This is the most important question you should answer to make your choice.

Both job roles are in line with my career path (technical/IT). but the present job is a strong and stable company, the only issue i have with the company is the stringent exit policy which is didnt actually know of initially

From my experience on contract jobs, i will advice you to ignore the contract job cos they promise renewal or being permanented after 2yrs. All these are big lies, rather organisations prefer recruiting permanent staffs nd after the expiration of ur contract u'll be laid off and start searching for another job. Don't be moved by their fantastic salary nd Its better u remain were u are. Your former boss is not the employer but an employee, he doesn't even know his own fate. Conclusively, I'll advice to pray about it.

thanks for the advice

If all factors were equal, this would be a no brainer. Being that there are lots of buts and ands, I'd say the contract job.
You'll be closer to your family, it could be an opportunity for growth ( I'm not talking financially which is already obvious), and well yes, you'll earn better.

You're probably that good be be getting these good offers, hence shouldn't have a problem getting the contract become permanent if there's the possibilty.
Worse case scenario, when/if it ends, being valid should help you get something else as good or better.

thanks, although i have started making plans of relocating my family
