In a fair fight l knew l could stand my own against a couple of these guys. The one harassing me in particular,one on one,l was sure l could take him down.
Assessing all of them,only the 01 and maybe two other guys there looked like a challenge to me.
But this wasn't a fair fight. The odds were clearly stacked against me. I was like a sheep in the midst of a pack of wolves. Realising my situation,l resolved to be obedient and try nothing irrational.

He asked me my name,my department and my level.
I replied him courteously.
On hearing that l was a fresher,the dude that had been harassing me flared up.
''so na jjc you be self for this acada. Nai u wan follow ur elder rub shoulder. Ur papa for there'',he said as he slapped the back of my head.

I refused to be provoked though. Not like it will help if l was anyway.

Ruff continued,''but didnt l ask you to come by 8 at night?''.
I wasn't sure if the question was rhetorical or not,but it didn't matter because l had no answer for it.

My phone had been vibrating in my side pocket ever since l stepped into the place. I didn't bring it out to check who it was. I didn't need to. Only Nonye could be so relentless,and it's reasonable why. She hasn't seen me,or hear from me. She must be worried sick.

''You go sidon here till 8. Na wen l go ready settle your matter be dat'',Ruff said with a hoarse,grainy voice caused by the hemp he was smoking.

In my mind l knew that wasn't possible. There was no way l was going to sit down here for 3hours. I was sure l will lose my cool at some point. I will rather take my chances than to sit here till 8. That wasn't going to happen l thought to myself.

''Collect him phone'',Ruff ordered the guy that had been harassing me.

He slapped the back of my head again and said,''gi me your phone. Infact,bring everything wey dey ur poket''.

I removed my phone and my wallet and extended it to him.
He gave them to Ruff.

Immediately he collected the phone,he looked at me and said,'''my heart' is calling. Who could it be?''

''Please,don't pick it'',l said to him.

Like he didn't hear the 'don't' in my plea,he picked up the call.
I was fuming inwardly now,but still managed to keep my cool.

''Relax!!! Your baby is in a serious meeting now. Bye.'' Ruff said and hung up.

After the call,he turned and looked at his comrades,''na my Caro be that o. Na my Caro this bastard save as 'him heart'. My Caro dey call am 'baby'''.

He turned and said to me,''wetin l go do you now?''
l was sure this was rhetorical.

''Make l just delete this bastard,Ruff'',replied the guy in charge of harassing me.

''Come,wey you'',one of the guys that had been quiet called my attention,''if you wan graduate in peace enh,make we no catch you with that punteh again. You hear me so?'',he asked me.

''That's not possible'',l replied.

That reply was a tactical error.
I didn't know when l bloated those words out.
I had let my emotion taken control of me.
I was still hung-over from the fact that Raw picked my call,spoke to my girl rudely and repeatedly bounced her calls afterwards.

I was angry about how those actions would make my girl feel that l didn't think about my reply.
But l didn't care now. I was at the point where l cared less what they could do to me. My cool was lost.

The reply shocked the gathering. Even the lone girl among us choked on her smoke.

''You say wetin?'',Ruff screamed.

''I said,it's not possible'',l repeated myself with more conviction this time. Chewing my jaw and expecting their worst.

And then it happened.

Although l braced myself for an attack,the manner it came wasn't anticipated.
I felt something hit me hard on the head. I sprung up from my sitting position instantly.
I realized my head became moist. In matter of seconds l could feel liquid rolling down my forehead and the back of my neck.
My head was in pain and it felt like it was breathing.

I quickly touched the spot,took a look at my hand,and realized the bastard just broke a bottle on my head.

''You chop craze? See this Jew o! I go use this bottle tek desin u now now and notin go hapun'',the harasser threatened as he brandished the broken bottle in my face.

''Just free the mumu make him go'',someone said from the crowd.

The harasser looked at me for few seconds and said,''you lucky. Na ur mama prayer save u today. Oya comot for here''.

I wasn't in a haste to leave anymore. I was mad beyond reason. I felt bullied,intimidated and oppressed. And l detest those.
Standing there at that moment the only thing l was thinking about was how to kill that guy.
I gave him a menacing look.
I didn't mind that l was bleeding profusely. Infact,l didn't realize my white top has turned to red.

''You no wan waka?'',he shouted at me.
''l say make you move before l comot your intestine'',he said as he shoved me.

I still wasn't bulging.
I overheard someone saying something about death in the background but l wasn't paying attention.

Suddenly the lone girl among them came to me and wrapped her hand around mine and notified me that my bleeding was getting much. I needed treatment quickly.

''There's a chemist around the corner. Come,let me take you there'',she told me.

At that point l regained my senses. I followed her as she guided me out of the compound.

''This one na rehearsal o. Make l no catch you with that Caro again'',Ruff shouted behind me.

I wore my trademark smile as l stepped outside the gate. I knew l wasn't going to forgive this wrong.

And l never did.

She lead me to a chemist down the street.
The dude started treatment immediately.

''l'm sorry'',she said.
''why? You didn't do this'',l replied her.
''Yeah. But l feel bad about it'',she said.

''So,you dating any them?'',l asked her.
''Nah. I'm just one of the girls in the lodge. Although,my bf is one of them. But he wasn't there'',she told me coolly.
''Hmm... I see'',was all l could utter.
''What?'',she asked.

''Nothing. Who's the lousy one?'',l asked her.
''You mean the guy that broke your head?'',she said with some hint of mockery.
''Yeah,the one that broke my head'',l replied her.

''He's Brutus. One of their executioners l think'',she said casually.
''Brutus. He's a student?'',l asked her.
''Was. Rusticated last two years'',she replied.

I had alot of questions to ask her. She's been open thus far,but l wasn't sure she'd be so cooperative when l asked the real questions about Brutus movements.
Would she even have such information at her disposal?
I was still contemplating this when she drew my attention.

''So,what will do?'',she asked with a childlike curiosity.
''How do mean?'',l asked.
''l mean will you go join a cult and come back for revenge or what?'',she asked with a smile.

For the first time that evening l had a good laugh. I was really amused by the question.

''And how are you sure l'm not in a cult already?'',l asked her.
''You are not'',she said with some certainty. ''Aside the fact that you were called a Jew in there,you wouldn't come here if you belonged to a different cult and they wouldn't treat you like they did if you belonged to theirs'',she added.

''Okay'',l said.

The chemists was through now. He charged 1500 naira for his service and some drugs he gave to me. She quickly paid the guy. I couldn't ask her not to because l had no cash on me anymore. Thanks to Ruff and his gang.
Then it hit me that l wasn't with my phone too. I thought about the fact that Nonye must have been calling. How worried she must be. The thought made me depress and angry.

I told her thank you.

''How can l pay you back?'',l asked her.

She wrote her number on a piece of paper and gave to me.

I took it and called out the name,''Maria''.

''Yeah. That's my name. Promise you will call me when you get a new phone. That's how l want you to pay me back. Just a call'',she said.

''l promise'',l said.

She gave me a tight hug,not minding that my cloth was soaked with blood.

She stopped a bike for me and gave the bike man 500naira.

''Hope that will cover the transport fare to where you are going?'',she asked.

I nodded with a smile.
She waved me goodbye as the bike moved.
From afar,l turned back to see her still standing where l left her.
She gesticulated and mouthed ''call me''.
I mouthed ''l will'' in return.

I turned and faced front. And as the bike man sped off,there was only one thing on my mind - vengeance.
