It started before 1984. That's why Shagari introduced austerity measures. Buhari took over and couldn't recover the economy before he was overthrown. IBB came in and introduced SAP and Second tier foreign exchange market which liberalized the economy but promoted corruption. IBB regime was assisted by Gulf War oil windfall; which was largely frittered away after Abacha died. Abacha set Macro economic and infrastructural direction for the economy. He conceptualized the gas utililisation and even GSM plan. But he also stole the nation blind. Successive stop-gap Abdulsalami regime went on spending spree. OBJ came in and paid off our foreign debts and built up some sizeable reserves. He also created EFCC and ICPC. Goodluck's administration made Nigerians deaf. Ngozi admonished us to save. OBJ warned. Sanusi postulated. Soludo talked. We no hear. Nigeria and Nigerians went on spending spree. We imported everything and consumed anything foreign. Now the money is finished and we are blaming GEJ or PMB depending on your political persuasion. Unfortunately, we haven't learnt anything. WE NEVER SUFFER REACH.

The country was never great right from the day we gained independence till today.

Everything about the country was built on fraud including the constitution which she operates with.

Part of the reasons Shagari was overthrown was that Nigeria was negotiating an IMF loan and the conditionalities included devaluation of the Naira by 40% and liberalisation of the economy to allow for market-based economy. Buhari rejected this formula and postulated that our corrupt attitude and consumption pattern was more to blame. He introduced WAI and sent soldiers to break into warehouses hoarding essential commodities which were sold at control price. It didn't work because it created uncertainties and importers refused to import several items thereby creating scarcity. IBB came and conducted the famous IMF debate. Though majority of Nigerians rejected IMF loan and it's conditionalities, we still took the loan. Naira went from 22 to a dollar to 88 overnight. Most workers started earning up to N1000 as monthly salary. The economy was liberalized, especially the banking sector. Friends of government became rich overnight. I have to mention that this happened at the time Nigeria was earning jumbo sales from crude due to the war in the Gulf; which questioned whether we needed the loan after all. A government panel headed by economist Pius Okigbo later concluded that the Gulf War windfall was Misspent .

I will agree that a loan at a time of plenty may not be necessary. However using the military as an economic stabilation tool in a capitalist economy was out of place.
It seemed PMB at that time was much of a socialist or he had such tendencies. one just have to look at his policies and system of government.
If Nigeria is a capitalist economy we should not shy away from the major attribute of capitalism. I.e WEALTH IS RESERVED FOR THE WEALTHY

The current econic thinking was played in the past and foiled because PMB at that time failed to secure his ground before indirectly offending the capitalist thereby losing his throne.
I will hate to see a case where Nigerians would have suffered for nothing due to another economic reversal .No governnent will live forever. However policies can when they have the backing of the majority.
Is this government thinking of holding their ground this time or will they fall to the caprices of the 'capitalist'

They control the economy and even the peoples thought process, to the extent that the citizens are not willing to submit to PMB exhortative change mantra.
