I was browsing my Facebook timeline when I came across this article: "What does a serious relationship really mean?" and I was intrigued after reading and decided to share with fellow my nairalanders. Read below and comment on what you think.

What does a serious relationship really mean?

When you read this topic, what came into your mind? probably a relationship that ends up or will end up in marriage? or maybe a relationship that comprises of two mature individuals?

Well, I feel a serious relationship entails so much more than that. While I don't refute the idea that a serious relationship should have future plans in view or should consist of two people who would love to spend the rest of their life with each other, I feel revolving the whole definition of the subject matter around just those two ideas paints an incomplete picture.

So what does a serious relationship entail? A serious relationship by definition is any relationship which serves to fulfill a purpose or an aim. This purpose could range from helping each other achieve goals and dreams to saving each other from promiscuity or even just to gain experience. What does this mean? It means that as long you and your partner are not playing around but really work with each other and give each other a purpose, then your relationship is a serious one.

Two factors also add up to support this definition. These factors are Love & Understanding.

Now Love attracts two people together; Love makes two people want to get to know each other; Love is the reason why you'ld want to support your partner and why your partner would put himself or herself out there for you; Love makes you trust your partner; Love makes you want to give your relationship a purpose, it makes you see a future; Love is the basis of a serious relationship.

However, some relationships are purely based on Understanding. Yea, I mean from the very beginning the both partners agree to be with each other acknowledging that they can both give more purpose to their lives and that they could be happy together. Understanding each other is another dynamic feature of a sincere and resolute relationship.

Regardless of which of these factors you base your relationship on, always strive to discern the genuineness of your partner (except of course you still wanna play around or perhaps keep vaulting from one relationship to another). A promise of marriage is never enough to seal the seriousness of a relationship or guarantee the future of two partners. A purpose on the other hand makes you stick to your partner no matter the situation.

You can never know. Nobody has a predestined future partner. You partner in a serious relationship could always become your future partner. There's a very high possibility. Besides I feel its better than having some affair that is based on sex alone, because here is where the real expense lies.

I still wonder what will make people sleep around without a string of seriousness. Please for the girls wise up. Be serious with that guy that would rada starve for you to eat.such guy na money de keep am,he for done come marry you . Mbok try support his dream.

And for the guys ,try not to waste the time of any girl who has sacrify for you. Be it disobeying or lying to dia parents just to be with you.

Yea, that's just the point. If you are in a serious relationship, there are chances it could lead to marriage, but not all. Before you can engage in a serious relationship, it means you have the right mindset which could possibly make you achieve your purpose and even get married.
