Chukazu:The minister is not the one who is confused but you, because you have no idea of what is been discussed. All the stadiums used for the premier league go search for who own them and who operates them. Go to the U.S stadiums and sporting teams and find out |

DeRay98:We can argue but it won't take us anywhere. what I posited is not just based on stadium concessioning, but the overall performance of the minister which has been the most abysmal of any minister, little to mention the charade that pervaded our outing at the RIO OLYMPICS. |

This is not a big deal. Many countries who host olympics also struggle to put their stadia to good use. I've been to Barcelona and visited the Olympic stadium there. It's also underutilized. Left to me If I could get hold of the surulere stadium complex, I'd build a mall and amusement park there, demolish the main bowl, build a smaller dedicated soccer stadium, keep the tennis, swimming, indoor courts, build smaller Futsal pitches (like 4) and rent those out as club membership for the middle class of surulere to have a place to keep fit in the evenings and on weekends while members of sport associations would be eligible to use during the day when most people are at work. The Lagos state stadium across the road can suffice for track events. |

ednut1:That is part of Nigerian life for you, reasoning subdued by emotion in this case nostalgia. The national stadium lagos is in such a poor state that the football pitch in nearby teslim balogun stadium is considered much better. The national stadium is supposed to be the major traning zone for many olympic sports but it is in bad shape. But to suggest real and concrete steps towards rehabilitation or recovery will lead to backlash, I do not really support privatization but I recognize the reasoning behind it. I am okay with privatizating the football stadium but the one in Lagos has other facilities like wrestling, basketball and swimming. Probably a poor choice to build a multipurpose stadium and leave it to disuse. |

Chukazu:The thread was not on his well-known abysmal performance but on the decision about stadia concessioning. He didn't make that decision but his predecessors did and he is going to implement it and is a step in the right direction. |

[quote author=kjhova post=49973125]The comments should not even be about the right or wrong of selling the two stadiums but rather about the workability of the plan. The critical issue I observe here is the possible inability of the government to find buyers at acceptable price. Put yourself in the position of the probable buyer and the following questions will come to mind; a) How much should I pay for this facility. b) How much will the maintenance cost annually? c) What sporting competitions can generate enough funds to cover the cost of acquisition and keep the facility profitable going forward? The reason why government find it dificult to maintain this stadiums will be the same reason why most potential buyers will stay clear unless the purchase deal permits the buyers to convert the facilities to non-sporting commercial structures (e.g. If I buy the National Stadium at Surulere, Lagos for N8.5B, I will rather convert the main bowl to a ground for social & religious rallies rather than reno |
