I blame our secondary schools for this, before entering the university, one should know what he/she wants as a career and the right courses to study in order to achieve that. e dey pain me to see a civil engineer hustling for a marketer's job for bank. |

I'm a graduate of Biochemistry for 11 years, although employed but trust me the story hasn't been pleasant. Biochemistry as a professional field is well established in some first world countries but unfortunately not in Nigeria. The demand in Nigeria is rather too poor as so many organisations that should access its services literally have other options. Many hospitals create little or no space for biochemists, sometimes we are advised to get fresh training, bag additional qualification as Medical laboratory scientist to have any hope for placement, it's so frustrating and annoying to get such advise after four minimum years of training for the qualification. My advice to biochemistry graduates, especially those opting for Masters is to divert to more lucrative fields like Public Health which has several sub-specialties. A brand new field also in Nigeria Universities is the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Public Health Biotechnology, this is very lucrative and is well accepted around the world, that's what I did and I'm grateful that it's gradually paying off. 6 Likes |

This issue is not only limited to Biochemistry as a discipline, all Basic Medical Courses are involved in this mess in Nigeria. The truth of the matter is simple, something has to be done about the structuring of the Nigerian health sector so that Paramedics will at least have a unit in teaching hospitals, federal medical centres and hospital. Will they even listen? 1 Like |

Leme not lie to you am doing Biochemistry and that course is a dead end pathway. No future. To even get place to do IT(Industrial training) is wahala where you will even be offering free services. Medical laboratory scientist refer to us as laboratory quacks. So they make it difficult for lab owners to accept you. How many Industries are functional in Nigeria that you want to work in factory? Abi is lecture? Except you have the connect. Haven't you heard professors now retire at 70? so who do you want to be removed so you can replace? The course self is hard die. Since when my school started running this programme in 1999 we have never produced a first class graduate. So at best you may grad with a 2:2 and if you are hard working 2:1. That now makes it difficult for you to compete with others coming from different field since they are coming with better results in getting a job. What is the fate of those who don't make 2:1? Many of my mates are planing to apply DE to do medicine or pharmacy. But last last sha aside medicine I don't think any other profession has security. there are unemployed graduates every where in each field except medicine where you may only complain the pay is not good . So every body really needs the connect to get a good job irrespective of what he/she studied. For me I am hoping to start my own establishment when I graduate. Am not going to sit and wait for miracle. The advantage of Biochemistry is that its an interesting course and it will help you make inform decisions since you understand how stuffs are metabolised in your body. but who that one don epp sha? 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Biochemistry is a beautiful course of study that opens the door to a new reality. I am one. Combined with a very good marketing skills, there is a lot of hope for us in the pharmaceutical industry as medical representative, Nestle as nutrition advisers. I work for a pharmaceutical company and its been wonderful. God first. 1 Like |

I studied Biochemistry as a first degree and will soon be through with my Msc in Toxicology and Environmental Biochemistry. Nothing good in life comes easy. I am working towards becoming an environmentalist. I have been doing some part time work for an environmental consulting firm and it has been challenging. I have my eyes on Federal Environmental Protection Agency, NOSRDA, states' environmental protection agencies, national and states' emergency management agencies waste management authorities etc. Work for few years and start my own consulting firm. You need to google the increasing number of projects requiring EIA, ERA and the rest. Biochemistry is very wide. Do not be discouraged. Take up an option and forge ahead. 3 Likes |
