I noticed alot of Biochemistry graduates are out confused, some are even considering the option of going for a second degree in Pharmacy or Medicine. While some are considering the option of Masters, known that master program do not guaranty employment but increases the hope of getting employed.

The Nigeria of today, what matters more is ur graduating grade and your ability to easily switch over to any career you find an opportunity in.

A good number of Engineers/Scientists are working as Accountants/Tax consultants in Accounting/Auditing firms. Many Biochemists, Zoologist, Vet doctors and co are in the banking/ Telecom/IT sectors. I know people who read Microbiology, Biochemistry and Agric related courses in the Oil and Gas sector today.

My former MD who runs one of the most respected Petroleum Geology servicing companies in Nigeria had a first degree in Zoology!

What determines more the career you'll pursue is the working environment you'll find your self and ur ability to acquire numerous skills to be able to compete with different professionals.

I read Geology but my first working experience was in a bank.

Bro if you are planning on studying bch, my free advice to you,there is no job for biochemists graduates in this country, change on time, i also studied the same course, imagine someone with a cgpa of 4+ coming back to study medicine. Guy think am.

you can get involved in water analysts and food analysts rather than disturbing your brain on what area to settle.

See at OP, you can specialize in any area and still be very jobless! Specialization most cases doesn't increase marketability!
I have discovered that 80% of people are not working in their area of study! That's just the way the country is now!
My advice is for you to learn as many skill as possible( from IT to project management) and hustle for any jobs without limiting yourself to your field.
Remember the No1 priority is to earn a living and survive.

Not if you want to work in Nigeria ....where are you going to find those kinda jobs in Nigeria?

Biochemistry is a great course of study but unfortunately there are limited opportunities in our country. There are couple of great organization and lab that dots the country which can offer some opportunities.
The breweries, beverage and food companies also can offer some opportunity
Aside this, be ready to do some post graduate studies. It is good to be a biochemist in the developed world.

someone will study carpentry abroad and still get a good job, but Nigeria, someone with MSC + Bsc in Biochem will be working in the Bank! when will this end?

There are a lot of options for the biochemistry graduate...

1. Environmentalist - Manuafacturing, Oil and Gas and Waste Management
2. Pharmacovigilance Expert - Pharmaceutical companies etc.
3. Law Enforcement and Military - Police, NDLEA, NAFDAC, EFCC, Customs, Army, Navy, Airforce
4. Drug Baron - This I do not advice but these biochem guys, having gotten knowledge about drugs, chemicals and the human body can whip out some really crazy sh*t .
5. Research and Development Scientist - Also found in most fields Oil and Gas inclusive.
6. They can work at NASA or NORSDA? (Nigerian Equivalent of NASA)
7. The Beverage industry is also another option.

I think they work in all these beverage companies, lecturers, banking of which even medical doctors do.... Etc....

2. Your services in multinationals like brewery uac pharmaceuticals and other food or snacks producing companies multinationals is needed
3. Work for smaller outfits as factory workers
4. Teach in secondary schools


1 is the easiest path, 2 is the ideal path because multinationals have very good packages and the experience can be great. 3 and 4 can be frustrating, pay is small and or you work longer hours.

Getting a masters if you can or really interested in bch is ideal but then you need a phd alongside. Master holders now are much especially for bch where we don't have enough industry to absorb all the graduates. Most go back for masters and they still have to settle for jobs of 50-70k. But with a phd you should be very ok with the offers you will get. There is always the option of becoming a lecturer which is very possible with a phd
