Meet the Tank Girls Taking on al-Shabaab

ARABISKA FORWARD OPERATING BASE, Somalia — It was 9:30 a.m., in a desolate corner of Somalia, and Lt. Cpl. Juliet Uwimana was taking her tank for a test drive. She and the rest of Uganda’s Battle Group 18 had been in the war-torn Lower Shabelle region for only a week, but already the battle group was on high alert.

Al-Shabab militants had overrun three similar forward-operating bases in the last year, killing more than 100 soldiers. They had also attacked dozens of other bases, including one just six miles from their post in Arabiska. But this morning was a quiet one — hence Uwimana’s test drive in the T-55 tank. She stood on a metal seat as the machine jerked forward, spewing smoke from its massive treads and rolling through sand so deep it threatened to swallow the vehicle whole.

Uwimana is one of roughly 500 women in the Ugandan contingent of AMISOM, the 17,000-strong African Union force tasked with battling al-Shabab and securing the troubled Horn of Africa nation so that a political process can take root. They serve as drivers, gunners, and technicians in the motorized infantry division — roles that women were barred from in the U.S. military until as recently as last year. But in Somalia, female peacekeepers have been serving in these positions for years. This is remarkable not only because al-Shabab is among the region’s most dangerous terror groups, but because Somalia is generally one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman, according to various rankings and polls. Somalia has the highest prevalence of female genital mutilation in the world at 95 percent, among the highest maternal mortality rates at 1,600 deaths per 100,000 live births, and, though official statistics are unreliable, anecdotal evidence suggests that sexual assault remains an inescapable threat for most women across the country.

But the fact that AMISOM features so many women in combat roles is neither a matter of oversight, nor desperation. It’s a strategic gambit. The female peacekeepers have an unspoken but very clear mandate: to prevent their male colleagues from perpetrating sexual violence against civilians and to help nurture faint stirrings of gender equality in Somalia.

After a bumpy swing around the base’s green Hesco barriers, Uwimana’s tank gunner, Lt. Cpl. Lehi Chebet, calls down for the tank’s driver to cut the engine, her voice nearly drowned out by its roar. The vehicle lurches to a halt and the fresh-faced tank gunner nimbly maneuvers her way out of its small opening, giving a short nod. The machine is ready.

Cabinet Secretary for Defence Ambassador Raychelle Omamo on 14th October 2016 led the Kenya Defence Forces in marking the 5th KDF day at Kenya Navy, Mtongwe base. This years’ theme was “Selfless service in Defence of the Nation.”

Absolute Rubbish! Alert what and what?

I remember the days leading to the Night club shooting in Florida, there was a terror alert and a major travel advisory for RSA. I remember @Centrifude, making a comment that the Americans were worried with South-African security, when they could not guarantee the lives of Americans in America. His comment was fact.

How many people cordon don epp?

The Americans with all their bravado and showmanship are all in full display, relegating the home country's security agencies to play second fiddle. That's all i can see.

Because of this thing called statistical probability

Statistically South Africa is more dangerous in America

Stop cherry picking

A whole spec ops team? Report didnt even give an accurate number.
Before I proceed with my video, show me a rule that says drinking is forbidden. Those guys are not on war front but an operational base. They are not fully dressed in uniform, therefore, drinking is not a crime.

You have a rule against drinking in such condition doesn't mean it's not allowed in Nigeria.

Nairobi attack

haha never knew Kenya soldiers are in need of alcohol that they had to forget they were there for a crisis.
See your soldiers stealing money and looting alcohol during a terrorist attack.

grin grin grin Kenya Military looting alcohol during a terrorist attack grin grin grin grin grin grin

At least Nigerian Soldiers don't drink while BHT attack. Just like that guy said. "Kill BOKOHARAM that is what I live for"
So empty shelves mean KDF were drinking the alchohol.... please... Anyway, I think you meant to reply to Africaken who talked about that alcohol thing..... but anyways since you talked about it....... like any military with internal diciplinary actions were taken to weed out bad eggs ..........

“We also went a step further and instituted our own internal inquiry. The inquiry has so far found three of our officers with stolen goods,” he stated. “Two of them have been sacked and jailed while we are still investigating one case in Nakuru through our own internal disciplinary system,” he noted.

and
all the money from all the banks and safes that were broken into were returned to the respective banks, and non of the banls have complained ever since

Col Oguna maintained that contrary to reports that KDF soldiers had vandalised banks and shops within the mall stealing money, they had actually helped several banks secure millions of shillings.
The banks were Barclays (Sh68 million), Diamond Trust Bank (Sh65 million), Kenya Commercial Bank (Sh31 million) and CFC Stanbic (Sh32 million).
The Millionaires Casino had Sh50million, which was also secured.
http://www.nation.co.ke/news/Two-KDF-soldiers-sacked-over-Westgate-looting/1056-2051746-scuskpz/index.html

------
If there was really widespread looting, that money would never have reached its destination

Anyway this debate is now getting pointless

Sorry I came in after everyone have moved on.

I work less than 1km from the US embassy in Abuja and I can tell you that even when the UN building on the same Street was attacked by boko haram we never saw US soldiers on the street with weapons. Instead they used local security company on the street to provide first line of defense.

Am wondering why you guys never thought of the reason why US returned their troops at the height of boko haram activities. That was because they never got what they wanted and the intelligence agencies didn't cooperate with them. Many warned Jonathan about the mistake he was about to make.

That was a rule we had to break in order to chase boko haram across our borders and It happened only for a few weeks in border towns only. They don't operate in Nigeria without the Nigerian army being present.

They are often the star attraction in major public holiday celebrations and the stuff for movie-like thrills because of their daring and eye-catching maneuvers. But few appreciate that behind the marvel of military jets that will be flying past the presidential dais at the Kenya at 50 celebrations are many hours of training and painstaking planning. Willis Raburu spent time with the Kenya Air Force team in Nanyuki rehearsing for the event and brings you the groundwork preceding the air display.
