@ chapelle s
If the poverty indices given by the west is what will determine the poverty level in nigeria,i still say no.Take as an example,a labourer earn atleast #2000 for a day job.If such work for 30days,invariably he would have earned #60 000 in a mouth.Do you still count such person as a poor man.The real issue i see as our problem is the low stanadard of living coupled with the high cost of living and inflation.Even in developed countries, there are rich men and also poor men.People suffer everywhere and nigerians cant be an exception

AjanleKoko:
Nigeria is poor, not because of bad leadership, the West, or corruption.
Nigerians are poor because Africans are mentally and psychologically poor.
The mental and psychological poverty is bound to produce bad leadership and corruption. No doubt.

Somehow, after all these years, with all the information at peoples' disposal, we are unable to transit from being consumers to producers. Everybody in Nigeria is dependent on someone or something. Call it government, foreign multinationals, etc. Wealth is not created in Nigeria by Nigerians, and at the end of the day, people are desperate and unbelievably selfish, and to add to the problem, we seem to have evolved a Western appetite for life. How that happened is surprising.

We talk a lot about how much resources we have, and why we should not be poor. How about countries like Germany or Japan, with almost no natural resources? Ever wondered why Saudi is rich? Because of the USA, wo created the dollar, and the power behind it. Take away the demand for oil, and let's see how Saudi or the UAE will fare. They cannot even consume the oil themselves, as little or no manufacturing goes on. Apart from Britain and Norway, I don't know of any country that has actually used oil to better the lot of the average man on the street. Only those two countries have a working social system, a self-sustaining economy, and an empowered population.

I have read, and even contributed to a thread in the Education section about the best business schools in the world. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I am ashamed of myself for even thinking in that direction. Nigerians, plunking down $100k plus for a chance to attend Harvard or Yale, so they can get a shot at Goldman Sachs? Haba. Not that the idea in itself is bad, but. . . it shows that Nigerians have extended their massive consumer appetite to Ivy League Educations as well. Look at the way British universities are shamelessly roadshowing across Nigeria, as our own systems crumble by the day. Totally pathetic.

Ever wondered why China is rich? Because it produces wealth by generating manufacturing capacity for the whole world,, and consumes very little.
Your posts always have the knock-out punch of Mike Tyson in his prime. Beyond your posts you have shown a great deal of maturity even when insulted. I have even asked you some lame questions in the past just to see your reaction and assess your depth. If you are acting (which I doubt) since this is internet, I bet Danzel Washington would be flush with envy.

Real talk. . . .

We are poor because of visionless, thieving and feudal leaders.

To focus on the dollar a day or other income based measures of poverty doesn't allow for proper contextualisation.

You need to consider other measures of living standards such as:
illiteracy or low educational attainment
high unemployment
Lack of electricity
lack of clean water and sanitation
Poor health and low life expectancy
Poor housing and shelter
Inability to participate in society (vote rigging and selection)

When you delve deeper into the areas above, you will see that Nigeria is very very POOR. To argue otherwise is delusional. The fact that our president has to travel out for treatment is the biggest illustration of a poor and disfunctional country.

As absurd as this sounds, this might just be true.
I remember during my NYSC days. One day under the bridge at Ikeja, I gave a female beggar some money and went my way. On my way back via the same route, I saw the lady beggar, transacting with a thrift collector 'baba alajo'. As I passed by her, she started her begging routine once again. I told her 'lady, as a corper, I can't even afford to save money, and here you are, saving! You don't need my money in that case.'.

It's part of the absurdity of the Nigerian/African situation. Some people have actually managed to create a thriving profession out of begging. Not even the street beggars. Every day, a new type of beggar is created. I once helped someone find a job in the East, and the person turned it down, saying the stipends and gifts he receives from friends like me is more than the salary that job would pay. Can you imagine that?

If a beggar can make daily contribution,do you still call him a poor man.I still want to know the indices this whitemen used in determing our poverty level.

The truth is that nigeria is poor not because of what we earn but how we can spend.tha 1 dollar per day is too little in nigeria as a result of high cost of living.1 dollar can give you a good meal in other countries but cannot get you anything meaningful in nigeria.mr biggs pepper chicken costs about 4 dollars.meat pie is 1dollar.tiny serve of salad is 1 dollar.bottle water is 1 dollar.no public power so we need about 3dollars for our small generator(i pass my neighbour) and 9dollars for slightly larger one.so for an average nigerian to live well,he needs at least 20dollars per day.

From what I can deduce in this post, poverty should not be based on the one dollar
syndrom. It has failed the test in Nigeria. What we have now is poverty in all ramifications
in the following areas- LEADERSHIIP, PATRIOTISM, INITIATIVE AND EXPECTATIONS.

If you do not have personal standards and expectations, are you justified to expect anything
from your leaders? That is why we cannot challenge ourselves and by extension, our leaders
or anybody for that matter.

Good one. My sentiments exactly.
