Are Nigerians Obsessed With Bad/evil News? by Ikengawo: 8:05am On Oct 29, 2012
I've noticed Nigeria is the only country that every single person that gets deported, killed, kidnapped, arrested, in a car accident, beaten, raped, molested, insulted, wounded or abuses makes the front page of papers.

Every single person, as if these things are abnormalities to the human condition. It's mind blowing the rate by which our national media distracts us with news of people being deported as opposed to asking the tough questions about our problems or the world around us.
If Mexico reported every single mexican that got deported the way Nigeria does for it's own citizenry their daily paper would be thicker than the bible.
If America reported every shooting, even in the state news, their state newspaper would look like dictionaries, talkless of national ones.

but everytime i look at nigerian media, online media in particular, it's images of any ounce of blood that the country managed to photograph.
You can say it's sad that there's 1 major car accident in Nigeria a week, but there's also 170 million plus people. If we're going to constantly obsess on any drop of blood dropped by 170 million people in and outside of our boarders we're going to be left with an uninformed populace. plain and simple.

A responsible news media doesn't report EVERY kidnapping in a nation that's the world's 7th most populated, such media recklessness is going to demoralize the nation and desensitize them to violence making them more likely to commit or ignore it.

If there were only 1 major car accident in Nigeria a week, then Nigerians would either be by far the best drivers in the world, or be a large country with the fewest cars.

Yes. It's most evident during Independence Day lol. There's always a thread on Nairaland come first of October, asking, "what is there to celebrate?" Ask them to celebrate the good and they can't recall any good thing about from where they come. However, they can recall facts and statistics on bombings, plane crashes, kidnappings, and corruption like they're journalists.

It's our fault though. We like bad news and controversy. We want it from the media and the media gives it to us because they know we love it. If you don't believe me, then ask Sahara Reporters why they were busy reporting 17 different ailments for Dame Patience. We swallowed that news. It kept everyone talking. It's a vicious cycle. As someone noted earlier, however, it's not Nigerians alone. The evening news here shows about 20 minutes worth of murders and kidnappings in the city, and then 10 minutes on local scholars, meteorology, and sports.

Moral: We're all crazy smiley

And what good news have you heard from Nigeria lately? There is still no constant electricity, Corrupt officials have not been jailed, subsidy thieves haven't been jailed, cost of petrol hasn't gone down and despite Nigeria having it in abundance it is currently very scarce and more costly, cost of goods and services keep increasing day by day, the cost of anything in Nigeria which has gone up in the past hasn't gone back down, killings are happening everywhere in Nigeria etc. Despite all I mentioned above, many people still have individual good news so go to church as someone mentioned above to listen to all the testimonies but as for NiGERIA as a whole, there has been nothing tangible to cheer about lately.

Most Nigerians are saddists. Bad news spreads like wildfire, even in schools, communities, churches etc. People dont like spreading good news because they feel bad when good things happen to people they know. So bad news sells like hot cake.

Despite the pain and suffering Africans endured during slavery and oppression, they still sang. You are not in chains, yet you are crying. What good have you done for Nigeria lately?

Bad new sells like wild fire. CNN used this in the 90s to dominate international news industry but are now getting stiff competition from other bad news advocates like Al-Jazeera..

its not just a nigerian thing. Its world wide. A lot of good things happen that dont deseve the front page of the dailies. For every good ''news worthy'' event there are 5 bad ''news worthy'' events.
