Anyway, lots of migrations occurred in the past. People often ventured out to settle in new areas. The Idomas may have migrated to Ette, so also did the Igalas too...it then becomes a question of who got there first. However, the Idomas have ownership rights to Ette just as the Igbos and Igalas in Ette. I learned that there are 5 communities within Ette. Do you know their names?

By the foregoing, the Igalas may not have much rights to drag the entire Ette into Kogi state being that they are not the majority in Ette. They should understand that Ette has become a trilingual area and thus no one tribe can claim ownership to Ette. The Idomas and Igbos in Ette prefer being in Enugu state, the Igalas are dragging to include it in Kogi out of political reasons, being that some pro-Igala Ette natives joined the army, police or other security agencies or the civil service, under the false claims that they were natives of Kogi State. Some of the people who falsely entered the federal and state civil services of the neighbouring states have now retired and have found out that they can not get political appointments from Kogi State, knowing that they are not from there. They now resorted to engineering problems, claiming that Ette is in Kogi State.

The average Yoruba does ot even care if SS is 100% Igbo, to them Ibibio and Igbo are the same... Go to Ibadan and ask the difference between Akpan and Emeka if they will now.
On the contrary, the SS people are the ones fiercely and jealously guarding their unique ethnic identities. And rightly so.
pls tell them. Most yorubas think dey are d same. Once have a snr in secondary school called mfon. Made a mistake of calling him Igbo. He told me frankly he is not related to Igbo he is ibibio

My father was present during the coronation of this current Attah of Igala, he was also there this year during the anniversary. He said u need to see the array of Nsukka kings and elders who are always present in Idah confirming their igala origins and paying allegiance. I even watched it on NTA and i saw many Ezes from Nsukka at the occasion.

So Nsukka now originates from Igala. Okay o. whereas we Know Igala came out from Igbo. Hmmm.

@BigFrancis, There are no indigenous ethnic igbos in Kogi.
Many Igalas from southern igala speak Igbos as a second language and may share Igbo origins, but today, we are all Igalas by ethnicity.
There are also igala speakers in Enugu and Anambra and Igbo speakers with Igala origin in these states.

This is funny.

The Igala speakers in Northern Enugu and Anambra are adjudged native Igalas, while Igbo speakers in southern Igala can't be adjudged native Igbos.
grin You wish.

This is quite true. From what I heard the Attah of Igala ages ago began a conquest to rule over Nsukka and for a time he was actually successful: The Nsukka people actually answered to him but then later on the Nsukka people revolted and the Attah's rule came to an end in Nsukka

Ya the Igala conquest occurred around the mid to late 1800s. From histories I have read, I have often wondered the penchant for Igboland the Igalas and Binis had. In the past you read of many Igalas heading towards Igboland to settle for many reasons. There seems to be a general fondness for Igboland ancient Igalas had, and which may explain why many of them left their hometowns and headed southwards and later settled.

I saw this still expresses itself when my Igala roommate back in my first year in 2008, who was very bitter against Igbos, told me that very soon they would conquer Nsukka land again. grin

The guy is pure Igala anyway, from his looks, most likely upland Igala.

The Nsukka and most Ebonyi Igbos' culture and traditions are purely shaped by Tiv, Idoma and the Igala cultures and traditions. From masquerades to marriages and foods and burials.

Where exactly did you get this trash from?

Everything rooted in antiquity in Nsukka, and Ebonyi are all Igboid.

Culture is dynamic, so they borrowed some cultures and words from their non Igbo neighbors, but their culture is still more than 90% Igbo.

Thank you.

Please stop misquoting me and stop ches beating....I never said anambra Igbo is central in essence...I meant they had their own dialect but lost it to central igbo and many still dont care about their dialect in Anambra so far they can speak central igbo.....places like Aguleri, Orumba and awka still maintain their strong dialects and even ihiala.

As per marraige anybody can marry from anywhere he or she so wishes ...there is nothing specaial about it.

Finally Enugu state is Enugu state with Nsukka inclusive....stop attaching to Enugu BC of Enugu city while dissociating Nsukka.....take care[/s]

I dont think it was fondness for Ndiigbo that pushed Igalas south towards Igboland.

I think it was environmental and human pressure. Everything south of Sahara was gradually being pushed south as the Sahara desert expanded, inadditon to the entrance of Fulanis into Northern Nigeria, the territorial war was fierce there. Even the Yorubas were said to have been occupying a more Northern position than the one they currently occupy, they were gradually pushed down southward by Waring tribes up North.

I suspect the same was done to Igala, causing them to Encroach into Northern Igbo territories.

Who knows, areas of southern Igala could have been Igbo strong holds that were overwhelmed by Igalas and the people assimilated into Igala wwith traces of Igbo language remaining as evidence of such.

Maybe if the colonials didn't come, we could have also lost Northern Anambra and Enugu to Igalas too. The coming of the colonials seem to have stopped the Igala wave, at a point they were yet to totally overwhelme and "Igalanize" the Igbos occupying those parts of Northern Enugu and Anambra.

Thank you for this. Akpanya can be said to be an Igbo-speaking community located deep in the heartland of Igala land. From the map below, you can see its distance from Enugu state border (the dotted lines) and it takes about 50 minutes drive, almost one hour, from Akpanya to Nsukka indicating far apart it is.

Some Nigerians are to a large extent ignorant of the ethnography of what is now called Nigeria, especially before the amalgamation of the British northern and southern protectorates.

Its unthinkable' that a supposedly educated young generation argue like dullards. States, regions, geopoloitical zones etc. are just what they are; administrative units and have nothing to do with ethnic delineation. The three major ethnic groups in Nigeria could be found outside their major zones. This is a well known fact in educated circles.

God bless you brother! Our educational system is pathetic or should I say many Nigerians are pathetic!

I know of Akpanya in Igalamela/Odolu LGA. They all speak Igbo. Everyone born and bred in the town speak Igbo. The ones that speak Igala are those that had travelled - mainly the elders.

Their market is Orie, also an Igbo Market day.

This is very informational. Thanks for this.

To also mention that the Igalas use the 4 native Igbo market days of Eke, Oye, Afor and Nkwo which are Eke, Ede, Afo and Ukwo in Igala.

Akpanya Community, Kogi State

Akpanya is a community under Igalamela/Odolu L.G.A of Kogi State. Being a border town between Kogi and Enugu States (Kogi is circled in blue in the map above), it’s so far away from its Local Government Secretariat which is located at Ajaka and very close to Igboeze South and Igboeze North Local Government areas in Enugu state. The community is made up of about 6000 Muslims, living in the Christian majority community - about 95% of the community are Ibos (Igbo and Hausa languages are commonly spoken). The Igbo Muslim community of Akpanya are not originally from the village, but made "hijrah" to the community after their ancestors converted to Islam. They have a very long history in the Akpanya community and are fully integrated into the community and its life. The Akpanya village is a very remote village that seem to enjoy nothing from the government in terms of provision of infrastructure- no good roads, no drinking water, no electricity, no good schools and no hospitals.

Well, ethnic groups do not exist in water-tight compartments, so you can be sure that there were to-and-fro movements between Ibaji and their Igbo neighbours of the Anambra River Valley; and that some Igbo came to settle among the Ibaji as well. At least one Ibaji community - Odeke - has traditions of Aguleri origins. During the recent Ibaji-Aguleri crisis over oil well ownership I was informed that Aguleri had both farmlands and fishing ponds on the other side of the state boundary, i.e., on Ibaji territory.

Just picked this to quote at random to make my point. This is why human beings killing themselves over ethnicity and other human-made subdivisions is just so stupid. Most Nigerians' worldview is wrong and that's why we can't make progress. Human being, human societies EVOLVED. Human beings spread across the world. Babangida is a Northerner today but it is very possible from his own admission that just 3 generations before him, his ancestors were Yoruba. Nigerians, live your one life in peace with your fellow man. You will die one day and everything will end, like you were never born (forget the claims of religion). There is ZERO genetic difference between human beings, be it Oyibo or black man, let alone Ibo or Igala or Yoruba or Hausa or whatever name humans have evolved thus far. The difference between a human being's chromosomes and those of a chimpanzee is less than 1%. I don tire!

The presence of Nsukka chiefs there does not confirm Igala origins. The presence of notable individuals or kings from other areas during a kingly coronation is mostly a friendly gesture. For example, the recent coronation of the Oba of Benin saw the presence of many dignitaries from Nigeria. The Nsukka chiefs attending the coronation of Attah Igala is not any different. Agreed a few Igalas, who seemed to have a strong penchant for Igboland, settled in Nsukka and were absorbed. The Nsukkas will tell you they are of Nshi/Nchi/Ichi/Ishi origin. Many of them you see bearing surnames/names such as Onye Ichi/Onye Ishi (Nri person). Note that the pronunciation (with falling intonation) is different from Onye Ishi in Igbo (up rising intonation) that means 'chief'/'leader'/'oga'.

Moreover, there are no Ezes in Nsukka. Most Nsukka communities have Onyishis (oldest male leaders, remember here that the pronunciation is the uprising intonation) instead.

One of the Nsukka chiefs there said that he is so proud of the origin of his people (igala) and he will go back to Nsulka to tell his people about it.
I have met ppl from nsukka who accept igala origins

Maybe his own family had Igala ancestors. Remember a few Igalas settled in Nsukka and were absorbed. However, these people are in the minority. It doesn't change the origins of the Nsukka people who are of Nri origin.

Ok. Akpanya people majority Christians and 95% of the town speaks Igbo. However, a lot of Hausa muslims live in the area and the town being located in Kogi state where there is presence of Islam, Igbos who converted to Muslim migrate to live in the town as well, given the language similarity with the people and the religious freedom and acceptance in the place. Akpanya natives who speak Igbo are mostly Christians but Igbo muslims, who are migrants not natives, also live in the town due to Islamic religious acceptance in the town. You get now?

The interrelationships between Igala and Igbo are so u intertwined that explanation may take a who day to be achieved. There are lots of communities in Enugu, Delta, and Anambra that have Igala ancestry. Also, a good number is f communities exist in Igala land that have Igbo ancestry. In Igala Ataship or chieftaincy, the people of Igalamela are the custodians of Atah title. It is the traditional responsibility of Igalamela to enthrone or give althe staff of office and crown a new Ata of Igala. By Igala history, the Igalamela people are Igbos by origin. They are not descendants of Abutu Ejeh. But today, they are all known as Igala people.

To be honest, Onitsha Igbo should have been adopted as central Igbo dialect since it is not too hard for many other Igbos to speak. Notice that in most of our Igbo language movies, Onitsha or a mix of it is what is used to act our movies, except for dialect-specific ones showcasing the beauty of our unique Igbo dialects.

Come to think of it, while we have Ada Mbaise, Ada Mbano, Ada Nsukka, Ada Owerri, Ada Abakaliki etc. which are mostly SE Igbo dialects, Igbo language movie priducers should make movies too in Delta and Rivers Igbo dialects such as Ada Asaba, Ada Etche, Ada Agbor, Ada Ikwerre, Ada Ogwuashi-Ukwu etc.

How many people from the aforementioned towns are actively in movie production?

Funny enough, most Nollywood movies now are acted in Delta state - in Asaba, Igbuzor etc. precisely.

All it takes is to pick one Ada from these towns who speaks the dialect fluently to be the lead actress in the movie and a movie with good story line is shot. Same in Ikwerre LGA, Ndoni/ONELGA, Etche/Omuma LGA etc. too. Regardless of current ethnic opinions, many Adas in such villages would be very happy to be called on to feature in a Nollywood movie. Many people want to be famous. When we begin to have Igbo language movies such as Ada Ndoni, Ada Igbuzor, Ada Ikwerre, Ada Asaba, Ada Ika etc. which becomes hit movies and spread and watched all over Igbo-speaking areas, Igbo speakers outside SE would gradually begin to feel included and part of Nollywood, an Igbo empire and 3rd largest in the whole world, and to Igbos in general. Thus, Igbos could use Nollywood as one instrument of uniting all Igbo-speaking peoples again.

You are dead wrong.

If we take it the way you did, then every Igbo town speaks it's own dialect. For example in Abia.

Umunneochi has three dialects distinct from each other: ie Nneato, Isuochi and Umuchieze dialects that is subdivided into Lekwesi, Lokpa ukwu, Lokpa nta, leru.

Isiukwuto has two dialects: Isiukwuato dialect and Uturu dialect.

Ohafia has two dialects: Ohafia proper and Abiriiba dialects.

Arochukwu has three dialects: Aro, Ihechiuowa and Abam dialects

Bende is as diverse as they come, we have Umunneato dialects, Okporoenyi has a hybrid dialect mixed with Aro as they are of Aro origin. We have Ugwueke, Loghum, Ahaba imenyi, etc.

Come to Umuahia, we have Ohuhu, Ibeku, and Old umuahia dialects.

Ikwuano has its own myriads of dialects

Ngwa is a dialect with many sub dialects

Asa and Ndoki dialects in. Ukwa area with their own myriads of dialects.

If you add them up. You should have like 20 dialects or more.

Ebonyi is not peculiar. What you see in Ebonyi is the norm.

Anambra has more than three dialects. I don't know how you arrived at that.

Orumba South has myriads of dialects, Ayamaelum LGA is like a world of it's own.

Orumba North, Aguata are also unique areas with different dialects. Ever listened to an Ekwulobia man speak before? Pleases in Aguata speak dialects that resemble those spoken in Northern Imo state.

How about Ihiala area, just look at the name, Ihiala, it already sounds Imo, as land in Anambra central areas is called Ana/ani and not Ali.

Nnewi south speak their own unique dialects that is laced with many Imo like words.

You are well traveled bro. I don't know why some people will stay in their various houses and conclude some rubbish.

Once again, good one sir!
