Wrong! At people saying that eeguns are not Yoruba .
We are Yoruba 100% only difference is we did not migrate from old oyo town or anywhere else. All eegun people still have their home town here.
The only difference I know is in intonation like they say Loole instead of Lole (go home) or
Maalo instead wa ma lo , Moomo instead of mi ko mo etc just double the vowel.
All Yoruba hairstyles are by egun people like shuku, shuku elelo, ologede, kojusoko , patewo, etc and of course the pioneers of skin bleaching they are the ones wink
If you go to our home town in cement and you tell one of my aunties that's she's not Yoruba she will slap you ni grin Funny enough they are very sensitive about this issue .
@whiteroses exactly also they are called Eegun because that's the tribe of the race living in that territory. Yoruba people are their brothers in old oyo now osun, Oyo and Ogun but they are more educated and all migrated to the eegun territory for job opportunities when the British would come to get & process palm oil to use as ship lubricant in Britain & other ventures. Before you know it Yoruba had taken over the egun land but you can also call it their land cos they expanded Lagos city itself .
Op please change your title .

Stop claiming the Ogus. They are not Yorubas. They belong to the Fon-Gbe family of Benin republic. Just because many of them speak Yoruba in addition to their native Ogun language, which is entirely different from Yoruba, does not make them Yorubas.

Eguns are not Yorubas. Their village/town names in Badagry do not resemble anything close to Yoruba.

Lagos — The Ogus popularly mistaken referred to as Egun are originally settlers in Dahomey now known as Republic of Benin. Their forefather migrated from Dahomey to Ipokia Local Government in Ogun State while some settled in Badagry in Lagos State. Ogu is a dialect of Gun-be. The Ogu speaking people are descendants of those who migrated from Whidah, Allada, Weme which are now part of the Republic of Benin but were all geographically and politically one with Ogu speaking people found before and after 1900 in Nigeria. Some of the migrations were induced by need for new waters for fishing, good farmland and largely because of the Dahomian war of the 18th century. In terms of spatial distribution, the Ogu occupy about 15% of Lagos State population and present a distinct ethnic group. Places like Badagry, Igbogbele, Rapoji, Agbojetho, Kweme, Aivoji, Iweseme towns and villages; Ajara , Ikoga and Ajido towns are today in Badagry local government area and are a division of Lagos State. Linguistically, they are sub-ethnic groups of the larger Ogu speaking people of the Benin Republic, Formerly Dahomey.

Have you ever listened to their news on Lagos state Television aka Lin Lin news and do you understand a word of what is being said? I guess not.

Some may claim Yoruba for political reasons or to gain certain positions in the state given the marginalization that they face but they majority will tell you they are not Yorubas.

The continuous marginalization of the Ogu (Egun) people of South-West Nigeria is common knowledge. The late sage and Premier of the then Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo has remained the reference point in leadership not only because of his selflessness and capability, but primarily because of his inclusiveness. For example, it was Chief Awolowo who appointed the Aholu, Claudius Dosa Akran from Badagry as the Minister for Economic Planning and Community Development (1958 – 1964) in the then regional government.

At the same time, Chief D. K Aihonsu (from Ipokia, present day Ogun State) was a member of the Regional House of Representatives through the support of Chief Awolowo. Since the demise of this sage (and the leadership style he represented), there have been spirited efforts to present the South-West Nigeria as a mono-ethnic region. In this vain, political representation (other than local elective posts) has largely excluded Ogu people.

For the records, Ogu people, who speak the language called Ogu (although erroneously called Egun) had been part of this space before colonization and amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Protectorates of Nigeria. The misfortune of colonization led to the partitioning of Ogu people into Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. The geographical spread of Ogu people forms a trans-border continuum in all these countries, while settling Ogu people are found in various other places in Nigeria.

To this end, Ogu people were part of the struggle for Nigeria's independence and have contributed in no small measure to national development. In today’s Nigeria, Ogu people are found mainly in Badagry area of Lagos State as well as in Ado-Odo/Ota, Ipokia, Imeko, and Yewa South Local Government Areas of Ogun State. They are found in most states that share borders with Benin Republic, including Oyo, Kwara and Niger States. In addition, there are various Ogu indigenous communities like Makoko and Iwaya in Lagos State, Ago-Egun in Abeokuta, among others.

The indigenous Ogu people of Nigeria have had their fair share of the troubles with Nigeria. The Ogu are the typical victim of ethnic crisis in South-West Nigeria. In recent times, there has been escalation of ethnic crisis between Ogu people and their majority Yoruba neighbours as often reported in Ado-Odo, Ipokia areas, and some parts of Badagry. A few years ago, Ogu people were, almost as a matter of policy, denied admission into Badagry Grammar School, Kakon Model College and other government-owned schools until sufficient pressure and protests were registered by their leaders. On account of the non-Yoruba names most of them bear (there are some who consciously and on account of accident of naming bear Yoruba names), Ogu people are still denied admission into the various tertiary institutions in South-West Nigeria today among other injustices arising from their minority status in the South-West in particular and Nigeria in general.

The situation, sadly, at times suggests a systematic intention to single out this particular ethnic group for persecution. To many, the Ogu are Nigerians only when it is time to vote. Lagos traditionally has five divisions with Badagry (comprising mainly the Ogu people and the Awori sub-ethnic group of the Yoruba) as one of these divisions. It is however worrisome that a lot of political decisions and other moves for development often exclude the Ogu as is playing out in the nomination of delegates for the forthcoming national conference.

We believe it is not late to rectify this gross marginalization and injustice. We are persuaded that there should be at least one Ogu representative in the Lagos State delegates' list. We are equally persuaded that the Ogu people in Ogun State deserve at least one representative out of the eight delegates nominated by the state. We reject every suggestion that Ogu people can be represented by non-Ogu people, as not only does this smack of an attempt to infantilize Ogu people, it also amounts to malignant paternalism. We reject the persuasive distortions that tend to lump us up as Yoruba. We make bold to say that the absolutism being projected by the current leaders of South-West Nigeria is against the spirit of national dialogue.

Ogu people are not Yoruba. Simple and short. Stop claiming them when you guys discriminate against them as see them as 'foolish'. Infact. The 'egun' you guys call them is derogatory and if someone does something you think is stu.pid, you ask them if they are Egun.

Ogu people are not Yorubas.

The Egun community is part of the remnant of those who were under the domains of then Alaafin and were assimilated into the old empire. I imagine 5 out of 5, yes no mistake (I mean 5 out of 5), has at least one Yoruba, Egba, Awori, Ijesha, Ilaje, Ekiti, Kabba, etc and most likely the others also have one or two Egan ancestor. You need to change your orientation of 'Yoruba', see it instead as Confederation of old communities who were at one time or the other in history of the same clan(s). Does it make sense to say Yoruba is different from Egun still? Does being Yoruba make you any less Egun? No it doesn't amen you any less Egun, just like it doesn't make an Ijebu man any less Ijebu or Ijesha, etc.

The writers logic works for everybody not just Yorubas, pick someone else to demonise. Your entire premise lacks objectivity in the first place since your intention was not to express the writers message about intercultural communication but to high light the division.

Also if the Ogu writer wants to speak Ogu freely, let him speak it to people who understand it. Lagos Yorubas scorn Ogu same way they scorn Ibadan Yoruba, it is a human thing, human mentality is eager to hate what it does not understand, this does not make people of Yoruba descent some kind of oppressor. Are there not Ogus who display their hatred for Yoruba people too?

Unnecessary long story. The Ogu themselves have mentioned to be a distinct tribe. You are the one trying to claim them as Yoruba but at the same time discriminating against them. They have their own language which is a different language from Yoruba. Why can't you respect their tradition and wish?

Here is a video of an Ogu, Agbaosi Sevezun, from Badagry speaking on public TV where she reasserted her identity to be Ogu or Gunu/GNU.
Fast forward to 6:47 and enjoy.

Please note, I did not say the Ogus are not Yoruba. They said it themselves. Please don't come here pointing fingers at me.

The Ogu people are beginning to restore their language and customs. Their ethnic consciousness is starting to rise in numbers. Lagos is their native homeland, which makes up 15% of Lagos state. They are also found in Ipokia LGA of Ogun state.

Srzly? What are u tryin to prove frm dis? An average yorubas' inability to interpret that doesn't mean egun doesn't av a history or aint interwined with yoruba. The yoruba tribe as a whole is a break down of different regions with their respective dialet and unique language. They speak dsame yoruba but each regions have their unique native dialet. The native dialet of the ijebus is different frm d egbas, and different frm d ileshas, ibadans etc. I may understand perfectly d ijebu dialet and can possibly pen it down but I may nt understand perfectly d ileshas or egba dialet, and I may nt b able to pen it down in writin like I wud do for d ijebu dialet. That doesn't make any of them less yoruba. They r all yorubas. Yoruba is very wide, d tribe, culture, dialets. So stop trying to twist or prove an irrelevant point. It doesn't work dat way. Mayb u shd go back and do a deep-rooted research on d different unique dialets and language in yoruba.

Actually both languages have similarities. Eguns are also Yorubas but are Eguns. Just like the Ijesha, Ijebu,Ilaje, Egba, Kabbalah etc...

I have interacted with many of them both in Cotonou and Lagos, I understand yoruba perfectly but I can't pick a single word when Egun people speak, in fact the language is more related to fon-language spoken in Benin Republic. My closest Egun friend is Hinwebo Emmanuel, now how is that yoruba to u?

Mayb u shd go back and do a deep-rooted research on d different unique dialets and language in yoruba.

this were ur problem comes from. Bro are u from southwest. Den if u are not from southwest fucking keep quite

just funny how someone from far away East claim to knw better than than the person living in the West. I have a lot of eguns as friends and dey are all yorubas. So pls face and mind ur fucking business

Ogus are not Yorubas. They have their own native language which is not a yoruba dialect. You are confusing native yoruba dialects such as Egba, ijesha etc with Ogu. In this case Ogu isn't a Yoruba dialect but a different language of its own. Just because they are bilingual in Yoruba doesn't mean they are Yorubas. Their blood brothers are in Benin republic where they speak the Fon dialect of Gbe languages and the Ogu people speak the Gun dialect. Please educate yourself. They are not Yorubas.
