Mechanical! You can work in any engineering company as a Mechanical engineer. If you get to work in an oil company, you can be easily trained to work as a Perroleum engineer. There are lots of Mech engineers on the field that work as Production, Drilling or Reservoir engineers.
As a Petroleum engineer, you're only limited to oil companies.
Re: Petroleum Engineering Vs Mechanical Engineering by princeFAD: 7:09am On Nov 10, 2016
@op. You want to work in the oil industry in the future i guess and the wrong notion is to think that it is only petroleum engineers that are engineers in the petroleum industry. That is far from the truth. Mech eng offers you broader career option than petroleum. My advice is to go for mech

Mechanical first degree (Broader and more relevant in many aspects of the global economy)
Petroleum post graduate (specialization in a sense)
Studying this way would open up more opportunities for you in the petroleum industry
If you study Petroleum engineering first, it would be extremely difficult to earn a mechanical engineering post graduate degree

I studied mechanical at the undergraduate level and I have worked in the petroleum industry for 14 years now.
Ultimately, what will pay you in life is not what you studied but how well you differentiate yourself.
All the best.

As a mechanical engineer, you can work anywhere... Telecoms, oil and gas, Robotics, Construction, Transport, Aviation, Education, Automobile, Health and Safety etc... the opportunities are much.. I still thank God for the soul that advised me on the mechanical engineering path!

Pls between Marine Engineering and Mechanical engineering, which is better? I have had my ND in Marine Engineering but still want to go for Mechanical engineering. Thanks!
Re: Petroleum Engineering Vs Mechanical Engineering by Unsad(m): 7:46am On Nov 10, 2016
I would have taken you serious if you were to choose between Electrical engineering and mechanical engineering but what do I see. If you're serious with your life , better tow the mechanical engineering path. No engineering course beats mechanical.
Re: Petroleum Engineering Vs Mechanical Engineering by MrCGPA(m): 7:46am On Nov 10, 2016
Gentleman, just chose Mechanical Engineering and forget about the oil hype in Petroleum Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is far better than Petroleum in terms of jobs opportunities and other wise.

Re: Petroleum Engineering Vs Mechanical Engineering by crazygod(m): 7:54am On Nov 10, 2016
Even if u do the two together, the reigning trend now is to acquire a vocational training in any passion of yours cos that's what's gonna feed you for life. Not all this certificates.

you are the classical example of the failed Nigerian youth that put the cart before the horse. You asked a very good and reasonable question,I was about to comment but then I saw where you started talking of higher salary and I got pissed. Are y studying for salary or for passion,do you want to be a mediocre all your life? haven't you learnt lessons from other people you see around?. But no your concern is about money, you want to collect big salary.Who pays big salary nowadays,do you know Nigeria would have produced over a million engineers between now and when you graduate. Instead of thinking big,you still thinking small like our forefathers and us. Have you ever asked yourself how some people are making it in their profession while others are in penury? Think outside the box. study whatever you feel your brain can carry, make sure you excel and try to build a brand for yourself stop looking for jobs upanddan there. are no jobs out there. Develop yourself to the pinnacle of your career and enjoy it,if a job comes added bonus if it doesn't you will still sail smooth. I once was in your shoes when I was at your stage but someone knocked sense into my skull. Today am not bragging but 3 square meal ain't ma problem.. I studied my passion, garnered the requisite technical know how and I even advice professionals like ama guru. Think outside the box
