In 9ja having a masters degree stands you in good stead. If you are keen to pursue opportunities in oil and gas do your first degree in geology and masters in prtroleum engineering. With this combination the world is your oyster.

Other option would be mech eng in first degree and petroleum at masters level.

Op,i Seriously Doubt You Have The Passion To Study Engineering Because If You Do You Wont Allow People To Push You Around Regarding The Course You Wanna Study.I Think You Choose For Yourself What You Really Want, not For The Money.

Its best you go for Mechanical Engineering, because it covers more fields which means more opportunities, than Petroleum Engineering does... #Goodluck

I studied Mech Eng,,i can do so many things to meet up..eg,,am into piping, welding, automobile, computing, construction contract management, design, to mention a few...you can be anything you want with Mech i bet you, you can go on research and write engineering designs and books..
If you to go further from a Mech Engr to Petroleum, you can take some certificate courses and become a driller, mud logger, and so on.

In terms of employment, Mechanical engineering, in terms of salary, Mechanical engineering!!!
this is the main reason our country can't improve beyond this level, and the reason why we have high rate of unemployment. why should we choose career base on MONEY? career should be chosen base on PASSION, INTEREST. only this can breed creativity subsequently creating jobs for others

Mechanical first degree (Broader and more relevant in many aspects of the global economy)
Petroleum post graduate (specialization in a sense)
Studying this way would open up more opportunities for you in the petroleum industry
If you study Petroleum engineering first, it would be extremely difficult to earn a mechanical engineering post graduate degree

I studied mechanical at the undergraduate level and I have worked in the petroleum industry for 14 years now.
Ultimately, what will pay you in life is not what you studied but how well you differentiate yourself.
All the best.
I should choose mechanical

Choose Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical Engineers can work as Petroleum Engineers with a Masters in Petroleum Engineering or training in oil and gas but Petroleum Engineering is very stricted.

It will amaze you that Mechanical Engineers are more demanded in oil and gas than Petroleum Engineers.

With this soft and pretty face in your profile, are you sure you are studying Mechanical Engineering?. The impression has always been that it is hard ladies that study Mechanical Engineering as it is a hard course. What with all the brain cracking differential equations.

I'll advise you went for Mech. Engineering. Don't be too focused on the salary. You can earn any amount of money irrespective of what you do, provided you are good at it.

The Petroleum industry is a mature industry that will soon peak and start declining. With Mech. Engineering, you can help solve some of the greatest challenges the world faces today (climate change, energy access, industrialization etc) while making money doing so.

Good luck.

ColonelDrake:
Do NOT make the mistake of choosing Petroleum Engineering. I'd strongly advise that you put in for Mechanical Engineering. Let's look at the reasons below:

1. Mech Eng is versatile compared to Pet. Eng. With your mechanical degree, you can be rest assured that you'd be able to work in numerous fields, in fact - in all fields. Mechanical engineers are in huge demand compared to Pet. Petroleum engineering is limited in terms of versatility. Think about what becomes of you if you're unable to secure employment in an oil & gas company.

2. The oil company has lost its glory days. The good old days are gone. The oil industry is highly volatile. You can be in today and out tomorrow due to the sensitivity of the industry to the prices of Brent. So, don't think because you studied Pet Eng, then you have an automatic ticket to work in the company. in fact, you'd still have to compete with hordes of engineers from other fields - electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil etc. If you check job adverts from oil companies, you'd see that job openings are always open to all engineering fields. in fact, we have more of electrical, mechanical and chemical engineers in the e&p industry compare to Pet eng.

3. Everything you will learn in your five years of study under Pet Eng could be learned in 1 year. Yes, 1 year. Facts and statistics shows that students from other engineering fields perform better than students with petroleum engineering background in a Master's class in Petroleum engineering. My point is that you'd see that most of the principles used in Pet Eng..are from advanced mathematics and physics. Mechanical engineers delve more into this than PE students. Talk about using complex mathematics principles such as Ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, Laplace theorem etc to model fluid flow. PE students are not exposed indepth to these mathematical principles unlike their mehcnaical and electrical engineering counterparts.

My recommendation is that you should put in for mechanical engineering and pursue Petroleum engineering in your Master's.

I agree with the post above...I'm a Petroleum Engineer with almost 10 years experience in the oil industry. My first degree was in Chemical Engineering and then a masters in Petroleum Engineering. Most people work as Petroleum Engineers (i.e Reservoir, Production or Drilling Engineers) do have a different first degree. The reason is that Petroleum engineering is quite narrow and will limit your opportunities outside the oil industry.

A first degree in another science or engineering subject opens you up to a more career options and you can decide if you wish to take a degree in Petroleum Engineering after that. The oil industry is struggling at the moment and may continue to do so for the next few years and it will be difficult for graduate petroleum engineers to get jobs in the near future. Thousands of experienced people have been made redundant in the last couple of years and are all hoping to get back in if things improve making it much more difficult for a graduate to be employed now.

My advise is study Mechanical Engineering and get a master in Petroleum Engineering. Just make sure you have at least a 2.1 in your first degree as most reputable Petroleum Engineering departments will not admit you with anything less than a 2.1

All the best!

Mechanical engineering is arguably the best engineering course.
Brother wake up from your slumber.. You forgot there's this engineering course called electrical/electronics engineering.. You can choose to do power engineering, computer engineering, electronics engineering, telecommunication engineering, signal processing etc all under the course.. Baba wake up.. After elect elect comes mechanical
