Nigerians floating label anyhow. Nonsense.
In the American music industry there are only three labels: Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. Any other 'label' you hear about is actually a sublabel to one of these three, or an imprint. But in Nigeria you'll have one upcoming artist forming his own 'record label'. Lmao.

some of you here just open your gob like anyhow.

So why should we follow the Americans footstep? Is it not the end that justifies the means? Fame, quality and money. And our boys are well and truly getting the 3 with their own label.

Olamide left his label after just his 1st album and became a monster. Wizkid left his label after his 1st album and also became a monster. That's what you call balls of steel! It means our boys are actually smarter and independent.

And as per the Sony, universal and Warner Bros you mentioned, things have changed in the USA too. Artists now only sign record deals with them, other stuffs are handled by their own personal label and management.

The structures are quite different so you cannot compare the 2 .... There are no big label companies you could compare with their American counterparts. Most Nigerian artistes form their label to push their own work and be free of a contractual shackle that Music labels often impose on Artistes.

You're the only one that quoted me that knows what he's talking about. Lol. The rest are just openly displaying ignorance so I decided not to respond to them. In America, I like the way its structured though, because even though the big three have the most say in the release of your music, there are sooooo many benefits. They have networking, they carry out advertising for you worth millions, get you into high profile events, and so much more. When an artist is signed, they could be given about $2 million upfront, then a deal to get a reasonable percentage on the sales of their music, and royalties. When Prince was alive before he died in April/May, he made it clear to his label that he had zero tolerance for piracy of his work. As a Prince fan, his albums were very hard to find except paying for it on iTunes. Even on YouTube, any song, live performance, or even cover of a Prince song was immediately searched out and taken down by the label. There are so many benefits of their system that no African label can give you. Most Nigerian artistes make the bulk of their Monet from live shows, etc. Major labels will help you milk EVERY source of money you could get.

To say the truth it's long overdue, Harry is a talented singer and writer, kcee can now have the family label to himself since he is the only one that deserves a good video, and to think harry is the brain behind most of his hit songs

Aye, I hear you. The model you described above is no longer obtainable because of the change in demand . Most music buyers no longer buy cds but downloads on different platforms and that has cut deeply into the market share of the Music companies, so they no longer give advances like they used to in the 90s and 2000s.... They have what you call a 360 degree contract which allows a record label to receive a percentage of the earnings from all of a band's activities instead of just from record sales or money-making activities that the record label had a hand in.
Under 360 deals, which are also called "multiple rights deals," record labels may get a percentage of revenue that may have been previously off limits to them, such as:

•Digital sales
•Tours, concerts and live performance revenue
•Merchandise sales
•Endorsement deals
•Appearances in movies and television shows
•Songwriting, lyric display and publishing revenue
•Ringtone sales

In exchange for getting a bigger cut from the artists they represent, the labels say they will commit to promoting the artist for a longer period of time and will actively try and develop new opportunities for them. In essence, the label will function as a pseudo-manager and look after the artist's entire career rather than only focusing on selling records.

Now you know artistes set up indie labels to avoid sharing profit with big labels.

The bottom line, is being under a major label doesn't necessarily guarantee success.

I agree with you for the most part, yeah but being signed to a major label is far easier than being an indie artist. To get you music on iTunes yourself is a really big problem because of all the requirements so people use sites like reverbnation to do the work for them. I helped someone get his mixtape/EP on iTunes set up a few digitals ads and everything, and its took up to $300 USD to do all that. We're just hoping he makes a few sales and he's trying to find gigs so he can make the money back. Ed Sheeran was an indie artist and he was doing ok, but being signed to major label in a few years ago boosted his career greatly.
The indie artistes that are really making money are:
-The previously established artists
-Producers who lease their instrumentals to upcoming artistes instead of selling exclusive rights
-Indie artistes with hit songs
And, as an indie artist if you're lucky to get your song used in a TV ad
