It may be the aftermath of massive gas flaring. The unclean gas contains dangerous elements that burn with deleterous effects on the biotic factors of the environment. Illegal numerous rifeneries can also be the source of the soot. The 0.25ppm and 0.5ppm are the most potent in destroying human health.

I think this is just a guise to frustrate tomorrows elections, just like the Oil mil bridge road was closed by Berger under the guise of maintenance, it's more than 5 days since this strategic road was closed and there's been no maintenance on it.

Julius Berger in portharcourt is different form the Berger I know. They didn't announce that the road will be closed off, no diversion and most of all no evidence of any maintenance done for the last 5 days since the road was closed.

That's Proly photochemical smog ...No need to start looking for the 'source' when you have hundreds of of thousands of environmentally unfriendly cars allover plus the oil flares. The air pollutants..nitrogenous gases, carbon monoxide etc are reacting and forming secondary pollutants

It cant be coming from gas flaring because that has been going on for a long time without anyone complaining about the deposition of soot of this nature in their neighborhood. Besides, the flaring of gas (likely methane) leaves far less deposits of carbon as is seen in this case.

They should go look in the creeks. Sure theyd find their source there.

The Rivers State Ministry of Environment has issued a statement concerning the Black Soot found in the atmosphere and on the floor in and around Port Harcourt and it's environs.

My fellow brothers in Rivers state, what u are seeing as black soot is actually not black soot but black magic. Before Dec 2015 gov elections in Bayelsa state we also experienced d same black soot. At first we tot it was as a result of d burning of waste dump site but it was later exposed by an insider that d smoke was actually coming from govt house.
It is magic from an indian woman who sends out d smoke, as long as u inhale d smoke, u will be hypnotized and zombitized.
Thats d reason bayelsians cannot complain even if d govnor continue to treat them as slaves by paying half salaries.
Wike visited Dickson this week in bayelsa state and was also introduced to d same magical powers from india.
I just pity for d ppl of Rivers state.

The government should just say the truth, this can only be caused by one thing which is combustion from those refinery and nothing else. They should stop beating around the bush. cos it's clearly their fault

Over a few weeks residents in most parts of Port Harcourt are noticing black like substance under their feets, this is from a possible carbon dust cloud settling on floors, car parked outside etc. Although most people don't get to notice it in the air but you see tell tale signs when it settles and you walk on it especially with moist feet. I personally experience it and many people complain the same thing that they see the bottom of their feet getting black and they kept sweeping and mopping their floor assuming it's caused by their, generators, cookers or stoves.

However over the last few days and from complaints on social media, especially Facebook and Twitter, most people are realizing it's a city wide phenomenon and this could possibly be from pollutants since it's happening at this scale.

Although the local authorities are yet to say anything about it, on Twitter residents are pushing for the authorities - local, state or federal to urgently look into this and advice residents appropriate.

As is usual with social media people already speculating it's from the petrochemical companies and some say it's coming from illegal refineries though I have asked that people refrain from making speculations but rather draw attention to it so the authorities or experts look into this and advice - so any claim that's it's from the petrochemical plants or illegal refineries are not verified, however one thing is sure, theirs a soot, clog around some parts of Port Harcourt.

A precautionary warning message is being shared on Twitter to draw people attention to this - otherwise most people just still assume that's it's from their own generator or stove.

While Rivers is in high gear for rerun election, it's important that the authorities still give this some thought and look into it, it might be nothing to worry about but at same time it might pose grave health risk.

Please if you live in Port Harcourt and noticed this, kindly leave your comment below, so I can tally responses, I am doing similar stats on social media and everyone so far seems to be experiencing this soot. This is not trying to be an alarmist, but just to ensure we don't take things like these for granted cause as a people too often we do, until it's way too late.

I just threw away the water that I used in cleaning my 'I pass my neighbor' car before opening this thread. You need to see how black the water is.
This thing is more serious than the way it's being handled by the authorities concern.
After every heavy down pour, the next rain within the shortest time again will be dark if you try to fetch it.
I fear for the life we are living in Port Harcourt now.

One wouldn't need to be a Rocket Scientist to know that the operations of illegal Oil refinery's and Pipeline Vandalism are the cause of the soot, but the RVSG and FG are still yet to find out where the soot came from. It just further confirms that all our politicians are useless and good for nothing. They are more concerend about their own selfish political gains rather than the welfare and safety of the masses.
