This verse can be interpreted as, " blessed are the poor in their soul content, for theirs is the kingdom of God".

Man is an accumulation of knowledge of which most are destructive to his soul/spiritual life. Shading these knowledge for the knowledge that will build you up for God's kingdom means your poor of the previous knowledge you have but rich in the knowledge that lead to heaven.

OP when you realize you have no food in your stomach this translates to being hungry and then you would have a desire to feed. However you would not just eat anything, you would eat something satisfying and filling.

This is what the scripture is talking about when it said poor in spirit. When you realize you need to be fed and are empty. However only the spiritual can satisfy the spiritual and when you eat the perfect spiritual meal, your spirit would know.

It speaks about spiritual humility and spiritual hunger for God.
