.Some Nigerian universities have deviated from their core courses. The Federal Government has directed some of universities to stop running programmes that are outside their mandates.

Gaining admission is the core desire of some Nigerian youths; they are blinded by the persistent need to join their peers in the university. They do not pay attention to the courses being run by the schools in as much as they get admitted.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has looked into the academic sector by forbidding some varsities to stop offering major courses they are not at liberty to run while they warned some of them to stop changing the nomenclature of some courses.

In truth, some courses have been twisted to suit the need of the school and the administrators. Courses like banking engineering have been introduced into the portal of some Nigerian universities.

Schools now offer courses that are not within their mandates. Most of the varsities affected are specialised schools that offer law and accounting. These are major courses that should not be listed in the portal of schools that seek to fulfill the need of manpower in certain sectors of the economy.

Check out the specialized universities that the FG has forbidden to offer courses like law and accounting:

Universities of Agriculture

1. Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB)

2. Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM)

3. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU)

Universities of Technology

1. Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)

2. Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)

3. Madibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH)

4. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso (LAUTECH)

5. Abubakar Tafawa University of Technology Bauchi (ATBU)

6. Bells University of Technology Ota (BUT)

7. Rivers State University of Science and Technology Portharcourt (RSUST)

8. Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu (ESUT)

9. Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil (KUST)

10. Cross River State University of Tecnology Calabar (CRUTECH)

It is expected that these schools will remove law and accounting from their portals. Universities of medicine was also listed as part of those schools meddling their curriculum with courses they are not at liberty to offer.

These universities derailed from their statutory responsibility by running programmes that contradicts their mandates. Universities of Agriculture now offer courses like business administration, accounting, banking and finance, management courses and so on.

Some Nigerian universities offer banking engineering and accounting technology. It is hoped that the concerned schools will take immediate steps to stop such programmes. Candidates should also avoid choosing courses like that as they are illegal and not provided in the JAMB brochure.

this is a welcome development, it's really saddening how those so called university of agriculture and technology respectively has derailed from there main objectives. it's awkward hearing a course like law technology or is it business technology, I'll like to appeal to the government not only to put this into law but to enforce it to the core.

This automatically means sack of the whole staff of their respective Faculty of Law and Department of Accounting. Creating further unemployment and gross loss of jobs.
I'm aware that the Council of Legal Education regulates universities that offer law courses, using certain criteria to ensure that they are qualified to offer law. If CLE had accredited such faculties based on manpower and facilities, it defeats the power of reason how they are now asked to relief their staff, especially, lecturers of their appointments because it contradicts their mandate. Methinks the best approach is to have their mandates (Acts or Laws) establishing them amended to reflect the current realities, by eliminating Science and Technology in their respective names. Imagine having only UNN (UNEC) offer Law in the whole of Enugu State. Thats worrisome.
