Hello everybody,

I just discovered this thread and I have already started reading from page 1. While I read however, I feel like asking some question that I believe people in the house could weigh in on. I have a BSc Statistics (4.33) and a (taught) Masters degree in mathematics (from AIMS in Cameroon, Distinction). I have done TOEFL (108/120) and I have applied to 6 Canadian universities (between Dec and now, still awaiting outcomes) as listed below

1. UVictoria (MSc thesis, Statistics)
2. UCalgary (Msc thesis, Statistics)
3. UToronto (PhD, Statistics)
4. UWaterloo (PhD, Statistics)
5. McMaster (Masters thesis, Stat)
6. YorkU (MA, Statistics)

I really hope I get selected in at least one of them, and my questions are to require guidance about funding and VISA processing when results are out.

1. Funding: Most of the departments promised funding but it is not clear (in most cases) how much this funding will be. So I want to ask anyone presently undergoing a thesis masters (or anybody with an idea) whether the funding(maybe through Teaching Assistantships) will usually be enough to cover tuition and basic living expenses.

2. For the Visa processing, are there things I can start doing in advance to aid the processing in case I am selected, What is the general chances of being granted a VISA say I was selected for a thesis masters ?

3. Also, from the previous posts I have read so far, I am really concerned about the issue of sponsorship documents as I am from a humble background and I'm hoping to get a depending funding from any one of the apps that is successful. Do I have to look for a sponsor with huge account balance for my visa to be processed? Like how much should be in the account? In the previous posts I read, I saw documents of landed property of sponsor submitted as part of the application process. What is the use of this?

I will really appreciate if someone could shed more light on these (especially on the issue of sponsor documents).

Happy Sunday

You did not state you already deferred once. So technically you have lost 2 admission semesters with the school due to no fault of yours anyways. But I would advise you to try call the school directly and explain your situation to them, tell them why you need to defer your admission again, you just might be lucky especially if you talk to someone having a good day at work. Otherwise, I'm afraid you might have to reapply for admission so as to be safe.

Because if you eventually get your visa and travel here, you'd be issued a Study Permit and you do not want the officer to start asking why you do not have a valid Admission Letter. They wont have time for your stories mehn.

Here is the mail I got from the school:

Unfortunately students are only permitted one admission deferral, and we have previously deferred your admission to this January term. Therefore if you are not able to join us in January we will have to cancel our admission offer and if you wish you join us in September you would be required to reapply with a new application form, fee, and some updated supporting documents.

I plan to reapply after getting approved.

My question still remains what if CIC asks for an updated offer letter before approval?

Bro, still try and call them. You have nothing to lose. I have seen this kinda scenario in the past trust me. Forget about the email and talk to somebody there, it has worked before. All you have to do is explain your situation. You never know. All these school rules are flexible and bendable depending on each persons situation. For example, during my Bachelors, a friend of mine negotiated his tuition with my school, did all the talk and my school cut off $2,000 from his school fees. I kid you not COMFAM!. Other people tried it and they failed

However, if they say no, do ahead and reapply as soon as possible. And if the embassy ask for an updated offer letter right now quote the schools email, tell them you have already re-applied for admission and show them proof of re-application. They are smart enough to understand that you couldn't have done more than that. I would personally do this.

But if you like, you can follow your judgement and apply after getting approved. After all, it all comes down to the VO's discretion.

You aren't alone. If required, Hope you were able to get supervisor in those schools. If yes, 6 schools! shocked twale! You be oga.
I know Calgary offer TA/RA and small international differential scholarship for my program at masters level. Enough to cover tution and upkeep I guess.
Uvic- fellowship/scholarship, RA and TA plus Co-op.
Toronto- scholarship, RA and TA enough for school fees plus 16,500 stipend.
Others- no genuine info, because I didn't explore them well.
But I know, PhD scholarships are very sweet, guaranteed and will cover tution n upkeep. In fact, don't accept if it doesn't.

When we have full scholarship that cover tution and upkeep, sponsorship proof stress reduce drastically. Let's keep praying we have it.

Just keep reading, liking, and sharing important info as you read from previous pages.
Since you apply to 6 schools, I expect you to have multiple admission and your headache becomes which one to accept. You may want to read about each program research and support strengths, especially supervisors that gave you yes, to make your acceptance decision easy.

Thank you for not allowing your background to restrict you.
You are at par or even better than some rich ones, because you could apply to 6 good schools against odds, and have good profile.

Keep reading and praying for favour. We may be roommates later, if God wishes. grin

It will end with praises.

Shalom!

Sorry for the long post

I only spoke to a potential supervisor in Calgary and he seems willing to accept me after going through my papers. He asked to mention him in my application which I did. I don t have a potential supervisor in the remaining ones because most of the stats department make it clear on their information page that its not required and that supervisors will be assigned at the discretion of committee. Maybe this is due to the nature of Statistics as a field, not sure.

Forget about GRE and other exams, if your department doesn't require it. Your person probably is a US-knowledge person.
About funding, you should have an idea before applying, by browsing your program website well.
Now that you went for McGill- Big Gun, what's your CGPA? Hope your SOP is interesting? Did you get letter of recommendation from your UG project supervisor?
My advise: apply to 2 more schools. To avoid story that touches bumbum.

Hi,

First of all, McGill is a top school and very competitive, never put all your eggs in one basket even if you have a 4 out of 4 CGPA. Try apply to 2 less competitive schools. Sometimes, the most important thing is an admission not necessary an admission into the best schools.

Did you check the admission requirement before you applied? You should have checked that. You have to at least meet the minimum requirements. Also, they should state if GRE is needed for admission or not. You need to check all these things before applying else you will be wasting your previous time and hard earned money.

Scholarship is never guaranteed in Canada like the United States especially for international students. However, if your program is strictly research based, you should get a funding package from the school. How much the funding is, duration of funding, etc are the things you need to research even before applying.

abeg give that person one hot slap, just one, for spreading wrong info.
My brother, GRE simply increases your chances as an international student, it doesn't mean you can't be admitted without it, when no be US.
On a side note, that McGill wey you apply to ehn, no be sere sere ooo. I hope you applied to other schs sha
Speak with your supervisor as regards funding. He is your fund master.

I am not a grad student at McGill or any other institution and therefore know nothing abt their admission process. In fact i have not even applied to any sch. Answers given are simply based on little research via Google.

1. It is not mandatory to state your name as it is in form of a letter, and you may well still sign off at the end, on the space above your name.

2.SOP, LOE, same difference.

Hello House,
I applied for Meng in University of Windsor and I got admission for fall 2016 which i deferred to Winter 2017. the school specifically stated that I could only defer the admission once, my visa came in on Friday which is quite late and I tried to defer again, but they told me I could not defer anymore that I had to reapply.
please what are my options?

if I reapply for another school or the same school, will the new admission letter still get me in at the POE say when I decide to go in Fall 2017 session ?

Also If I don't travel now and I reapply for another school, will I have to reapply for visa too?

Thank you

I will advise you re-apply to the same Uwindsor.ca.
Using the same docs you used in the first application will still get you another admission letter, the application fee is what they're really interested in as it generates alot for them.
As regard P.O.E, just tell then u couldn't defer the admission for the second time (school policy) so you have to re-apply hence the reason for entering late. (You can print out the school letter sent to your e-mail as regarding that for proof at P.O.E, and if there's need for you to extend your study permit before the end of your program, it won't be an issue owing to the fact that they're already aware at the P.O.E.
Note-if you re-apply to another school, you will have to re-apply for visa. (Change in D.L.I)

I did the online application and I saw that changing DLI is quite easy but what scares me is being denied at the POE
Re: Travelling To Canada Part 11 by penitential(m): 7:28am On Jan 16, 2017
Changing DLi is easy. Infact, you can mail cic for change in DLi after your TRV. I believe you've got your TRV, haven't you? And if you haven't, then it's quite simple.
Wait for your TRV, after your approval, inform cic about the institution changing plan and state the reason. You will be granted.
Also, if you've not gotten TRV, cic may request for new admission letter, the you can CC them (cic) about the school policy of 'no second deferral'.
