Kindly Advise Me On The Behaviour Of My Managing Director by Ebobi(m): 6:21pm On Jan 22, 2017 |
I am a senior manager in the company I work for at the moment (like second in control). Recently, we had a client who rejected our products due to obvious production and installation defects, and demanded a refund of his money, which is ok. This problem came up due to several factors ranging from non-provision of necessary work tools, poor work by installers, demotivated teams, among others. And a meeting was called by the MD, who normally is not on ground. Since the MD rants a lot, we (the managers) expected a sack or even preferred a sack or resign, but he insisted that on no account must anyone of us resign until the client's issue and other lingering issues are closed out, otherwise he would arrest us. During this period, none of us is expecting to receive salaries, the period will likely be up to three months (Jan. to Mar. 2017). To everyone that can give me some pieces of advice, do you think the MD has the right to insist that none can resign, even apart from the new issue of products rejection, it is always insults and abuses? Also, kindly advise me on what you think I should do now. Thank you in anticipation of your responses. Eddy. |

godfrey01: That a client rejects a product. We expect that based on his antecedents, he will sack. Though we are even tired of the insults and abuses we receive whenever we are with him or on phone with him. |

Ebobi: It is obvious that it is a one-man business. The issue of not resigning is the punishment for the wasted time and materials which is a fault from you and your colleagues in the office. You admited to that. Advice: 1. Endure the circumstances because is you resign now. You may not get a good commendation letter from him. 2. Try searching for other things that you can do to get extra income. 3. Endure the insult and be rest assured that it is temporarily. 4. Trust more on God for your support. 20 Likes 1 Share |

Ebobi: You are a senior manager and should not be asking this question. However, the only issue may be that he may paint your name negative in ways unexpected but I doubt as there are no basis to do this. Otherwise give a one month notice as is customary and resign if you want. Nothing will happen. |

Hmmmmm, maybe the customer might have rejected the goods maybe because of the quality of the goods or the goods are not re-branded. But as for your boss maybe he is trying to make you guys think fast on the possible steps to take and also to think, where by using your salaries as a treat |

It is obvious your MD doesn't want you guys to resign because doing so would mean losing the expertise required to complete the client's job. By the way, he can't do jack if you go ahead to resign. Having said that, I am amazed at the level of insults and abuses prevailing at work environments. A teammate of mine, a girl barely above nineteen, would always say to the team: "If you do what you ought to do nobody would talk to you anyhow". In light of this, did you and your teammates do what you were supposed to do? Did you request for the necessary work tools and wasnt given? As the assistant boss, why didn't you motivate the team? How about planning? Did you plan properly before embarking on your task? Do the right things at the right time and no one would insult or abuse you or your teammate's at work. By the way once the job is completed, I expect your MD to fire some people and if possibly re-train the others. 7 Likes |

I'd always thought i have the worst boss in the world, he's a complete description of evil himself. So i think i have a good idea of your situation. I later realised that those individuals who are full of insults and curses and shouting are actually suffering from some fears. You can actually conquer them in such a way that he'll always respect you. How do you do that? a) Be very good in what you do b) After alot of insults and abuses, he'll sometimes realise you are correct c) Be ready to face him, be firm on your points and confront him those issues you are sure of d) Ready to quit and make it obvious e) and lastly, make it very very very clear that you don't fear him or his threats an inch. and clearly, you won't a single problem with him again. If i were you, i'll resign but have my lawyer on standby. 2 Likes |

Call me crazy, but this is what I'd do. I will "piss him off" over the phone and record the conversation. Of course he will threatening and all those shit. I'd just resign not because of the failed project now, but because of what I can tangibly hold on to from his many miss firing So your Boss want you to clean a mess he created or else he'd arrest you, only to wake up one day (after you'd have cleared his mess and Fire you anyway). Do we even have anything like labor law in this Damn Country? 3 Likes |

It is obvious that your boss wants to give you guys a good run for your time. Here is my advice. 1.You guys should accept responsibility for the issue at hand. Forget the issue of resigning for now. 2. Kindly work out modalities with your team on how you can make up with your boss with effective service delivery. 3. Look for an alternative source of income to keep you going for the next 3 months. 4. Even if you decide to quit after 3 months or anytime soon do not make a mistake of hinting your colleagues. 5.As the manager even in difficult times run the outfit as you would run yours not minding who ur boss is. My 2 kobo I wish you the best my brother. 2 Likes |

Ebobi: I wonder how you got to the position of senior manager if you didn't know that anyone can resign from his/her place of work. Maybe you are not telling us the complete story. I wonder why the MD will threaten to arrest his managers if any of you resign when you guys did not steal or something. Go back and read your appointment letter and follow what it says about resignation which is usually a month or two notice or salary in luie . Not even your MD or anyone can arrest you if you resign except you are not if there is more to the story that you are not telling us. The next time he threatens you have it recorded and take it to a lawyer who will draft your resignation on that day. You can resign emediately sighting threath to life. 4 Likes 1 Share |
