Hi. Is there anyone who has been able to get a Nigerian passport for a non-Nigerian spouse abroad. I have tried contacting the Naija embassy in London but they are pretty useless and will not pick their phones or reply emails. I would like advice from people who have done this abroad preferably. Also can it be done in Nigeria legally? I have looked on the Nigeria Immigration Service website but can't find any info. Thanks to all who can help.

No Nigerian Citizenship For British By Marriage

Dear All,
I was shocked today by the response from the Nigerian Embassy London by 15:57(02/07/08) that there is no provision for citizenship for any British by marriage.
I am married to an English girl and she loves Nigeria so much and want to be a Citizen but was shocked when we were told that she can't get Nigerian citizenship notwitstanding that we are married and I hold dual citizenship.
Could this be a reality- I am entitled to dual citizenship -British by the virtue of marriage and Nigerian by birth but my wife is not entitled to Nigerian citizenship on the same basis(Marriage)
Guys abeg I need some info as I don't know what and how to go about this

Ajali. Thanks for the post. Na wa o!! Dis go be headache for us! We are planning to visit Nigeria and some other ECOWAS countries but visas are difficult and expensive for my wife as we plan to visit Ghana, Cameroun and Senegal. A friend says she should be able to get a Niaja passport in Lagos but I do not know if this can be done legally.  Like I said before our embassy in London refuse to communicate with it's citizens in the UK by phone or email!!! Thanks again for the info. Please if anyone else has any experience with this or advice please reply. Thanks.

Ancel, no be say we no fit afford the cost but it is the procedure from UK I dey try find out. Unfortunately our embassy no dey answer queries from it's citizens by phone. My wife is Swedish and all the ECOWAS countries we wan visit dey demand make she come down to London on separate dates for interviews but we live in Manchester so it will be a lot of hassle . Abeg if you get any info or advice please help. Thanks

When I said "costly" I wasn't talking about monetary value o. I meant the difficulty and stress. I hope it all works out fine for you!

Sorry you couldn't find anything useful there. Have you thought of going to the Nigerian embassy in London? Since you said they are not answering queries by phone. Just a thought

whoever told you that you can get a nigerian passport |(in nigeria) for your wife is a big liar. you CANNOT get it. and with the new E- passport, it is virtually impossible. you either get visas or you forget about your planned trip. it is soooooo amusing, nigeria with all its issues, treats its passport like gold and rarely issues it to foreign nationals.

Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999

Chapter III, Citizenship


27. (1) Subject to the provisions of section 28 of this Constitution, any person who is qualified in accordance with the provisions of this section may apply to the President for the same of a certificate of naturalisation.

    (2) No person shall be qualified to apply for the grant of a certificate or naturalisation, unless he satisfies the President that -

            (a) he is a person of full age and capacity;

            (b) he is a person of good character;

            (c) he has shown a clear intention of his desire to be domiciled in Nigeria;

            (d) he is, in the opinion of the Governor of the State where he is or he proposes to be resident, acceptable to the local community in which he is to live permanently, and has been assimilated into the way of life of Nigerians in that part of the Federation;

            (e) he is a person who has made or is capable of making useful contribution to the advancement; progress and well-being of Nigeria;

            (f) he has taken the Oath of Allegiance prescribed in the Seventh Schedule to this Constitution; and

            (g) he has, immediately preceding the date of his application, either-

                (i) resided in Nigeria for a continuous period of fifteen years; or

                (ii) resided in Nigeria continuously for a period of twelve months, and during the period of twenty years immediately preceding that period of twelve months has resided in Nigeria for periods amounting in the aggregate to not less than fifteen years.

Thanks to everyone that replied. Unless the change the laws we will just have to keep getting visas. The 15 year residency rule in Nigeria rules us out. Thank you all once again. Ajali thank you very much.

Hi I don't think there is any way u could get your British wife Nigeria passport without her having the first initial five years resident permit
