the 1980 green eagle squad

Emmanuel Okala

Till the Ghana ‘78 Nations Cup, Okala was the number one goalkeeper for Nigeria, but his form dropped and coach Otto Gloria chose Best Ogedegbe ahead of him for the 1980 Nations Cup. Okala was in the Rangers team that won the continental trophy, the Cup Winners Cup, for the Coal City outfit in 1977. He is the goalkeeper trainer of Rangers International of Enugu.

David Adiele

The right-back was consistent in the team in 1980. He featured in all of his team’s games in the competition. He was very strong on the ball and he covers up for the central defenders each time they overlapped. Adiele recently underwent a coaching course in the USA where he also did an attachment with a youth team. He was sighted earlier in year in Owerri grooming football talents and preparing them for the future.

Okey Isima

He was the left-back for the team and he also featured in all the games of the team. Isima scored Nigeria‘s only goal in the 15th minute against Egypt. He recently attended the Nigeria Institute for Sports for a coaching course. Isima is in Lagos and into football development.

Segun Odegbami

He was nicknamed ‘Mathematical,’ because of his dribbling runs on the right flank. He scored two goals against Algeria in the final match and had a total of three goals in the competition. He was good with dribbling runs, lobs into the vital area and also excellent in the air. Odegbami was an all-round attacking player in the Green Eagles. He scored 23 goals in his 46 caps for the country. He was a member of NFF‘s technical committee and has so far been unable to realise his ambition of being the chairman of the NFF. He was a chairman of the Nigeria Institute for Sports and also served as the chairman of the Shooting Stars Sports Club, his former club. He is currently the CEO of Worldwide Sports and he is the founder of the International Sports Academy, Wasimi. Till date he is still one of the most popular and visible of the 1980 bunch.

Sylvanus Okpala

He was one

of the midfielders of the team. He was fast on the ball and people called him ‘Quick Silver.’ Okpala played well by winning balls in the middle and also helped the defenders to provide cover for Ogedegbe. He played four out of the five matches in the competition. He was one of the coaches of the Enyimba CAF Champions League winning team. He was a former skipper of the Eagles and the first captain of the Flying Eagles. Today, he is in the coaching crew of his former club, Rangers International of Enugu.

Henry Nwosu

The youngest member of the 1980 team was a very creative

player. His dribbling runs and precise passes betrayed his age. Nwosu won balls and also motivated the attack. He featured in the first two games of the competition against Tanzania and Ivory Coast. He was the assistant coach of the Beijing 2008 U-23 team that won the Olympic Games silver medal. He is currently the head coach of the national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, preparing for the FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Nigeria later in the year.

Felix Owolabi

OwoBlow, as

he is fondly called, featured in four of the five games, including the final against Algeria. He was the hero of the semifinal encounter against Morocco as he scored the only goal that earned the Green Eagles a ticket to the final. He served on the board of his former team, Shooting Stars, for many years. He is currently a member of the board of the Nigeria Professional League.Christian Chukwu

The central defender was the skipper of the historic team and many people call him Chairman Christian Chukwu (CCC). Chukwu was a master stopper and he did this with ease. Chukwu was also noted for his long- range passes that motivated the attack. On many occasions he sent such telegraphic passes to strikers who convert them to goals for Nigeria. He was an assistant to Clemens Westerhof when Nigeria won the Nations Cup in 1994 in Tunisia. He is the only Nigerian with two Nations Cup gold medals to his credit as a coach and player. He also led Nigeria to win bronze at Tunisia 2004 Nations Cup finals. Chukwu is one of the most successful players in the team till date.

Adokiye Amesimaka

He was the left winger of the team and he featured in all

the games for Nigeria in the competition. Adokie did well in school football and was a prominent player for Rangers International of Enugu. He was very effective with his dribbling runs and lobs from the left flank. He served as the chairman of Sharks of Port Harcourt. Amiesimaka read law and he is currently into law practice.

Kadiri Ikhana

He was one of the reserve defenders in the team but failed

to play in any of the five games for Nigeria. He was in the Ghana 78 team and featured in Nigeria‘s 1-1 draw against the host in the competition. Ikhana has made a good name for himself as a coach in Nigeria. He led Enyimba of Aba to break Nigeria‘s 37 years of drought in the CAF Champions League. He is a football coach and currently handles Sharks of Port Harcourt.

Ifeanyi Onyedika

He was the striker of the team in the competition. He scored

just one goal against Tunisia in the first match, which Nigeria won 3-1. He was very fast and worked hard in the attack. He combined well with Odegbami to get goals. He missed the first two games and only featured in three games for Nigeria in the competition. Onyedika was a coach of the OUK Football Club of Aba. He is still a football coach.

Godwin Odiye

He was one the reserve players in the team but he managed

to play two games. He came in as a substitute in the match against Egypt for Onyedika. He did the same in the semifinal against Morocco and in the final he was in the starting line-up against Algeria. He made his mark as a player of National Bank of Lagos. He is in the United States of America with his family.

Others

Apart from the prominent ones above, there are six others who were in the team. They are Charles Bassey, Shefiu Muhammed, Martins Eyo, Frank Nwachi, John Orlando and Moses Effiong.

#Nostalgia

Gone are those days when it was a thing of pride to see "our Eagles" streaming onto the pitch for a football match.

• The streets were usually empty for 90 minutes

• If the game clashed with school hours (lesson time) teachers dismissed us early.

• Even mummies knew that it wasn't a time for their "go and wash your plates" anthem. They respected your time at that point because even daddy go hush them if them dare try to send you message At THAT time.

• Those were the days when neighbours gathered to watch and celebrate or mourn together (depending on the outcome of the game)

I really, really miss those days.

Now what we have are useless shows like Big Brother Nonsense and useless shows upandan that have no meaning.

I really, really miss those days.

It was not 2-2, but 3-2. Brazil were 3-1 up when Ikpeba (then aka prince of Monaco) struck a volley from a ricocheted ball off Oruma's back, just outside the 18 yard box and he celebrated in his trademark style of raising one hand, just like Alan Shearer.
