Thank you so much, so many valid points. The attitude of Nigerians towards people living with SC is simply depressing. Of course I no longer give a hoot what folks say about me or how they treat me, but what about my brothers and sisters scattered all over Nigeria battling with the same stigma who are not brave enough to face it head on, depression could kill them even before the disorder does. We neither need your unsolicited pity nor the taunts and discrimination, we just want to stay in our little corner in Peace. Ironically, my brother is AA, same father same mother, but he's always down with malaria more than me. People should stop making it look like living with SC is the worst thing to happen to anyone, there are those with far more health problems than us, direct your pity to them. SC IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE...

LOL, of course they won't understand. I like to use myself as a case study most times and motivate others because, I feel I am someone that have seen all there's to be seen in the disorder. I never grew up with the love of a father, he died in an accident before I was born. Then I grew up to face the worst kind of discrimination in our neighborhood, my mum took me to stay with my grandma in the village while she furthered her studies. my grandmother loved me front and back and was a tiger when it comes to my defense. I enjoyed the love at home, but the society treated me like I was an alien sent to plague the earth. In primary school, when other students are being caned for an offence, I will be omitted because teachers and students no wan make I die for their hands, they feel I'd drop dead the next minute if anyone touched me and they'd use it to taunt me later, that I be weakling. Choi! In secondary school, the stigma became worse sotee even teachers that ought to know better made fun of me. na that time I begin develop thick shells o, this people cannot come and kill me. In 2nd term JS2, I lost my hearing (this one is a long story). Again I began learning how to adapt as a hearing impaired SS patient. To this moment I do not hear anything, not even my own voice, but guess what, I'M a graduate already and believing God for a most successful life ever which I know I will have. So brother, be the voice of SC patients and don't tolerate any form of bullying.

Threads like this are meant to help you. Love is sweet but when one is in the marriage and is taking care of sick kids, that love will be so tested. You can't be forming hot love with an ill child. Do you have friends with sickle cell anemia, you go borrow yourself sense sharp sharp. I personally have lost a cousin (an only child) and a classmate to this SS ailment.

I have lived with a very close family friend whose first child was the one born with SS. We have no peace/joy when that girl was sick then. Every one will be on edge praying and doing vigil until she recovers.

In other cheerful news, there are medical solutions now available that can help a couple test while a mother is still pregnant. I have a friend who does that but please know you need the funds for this sort of venture.

There are other options too. A very good write up was done by a Dr Craig on BellaNaija some years back. Google and read up. Knowledge is power. Some of our parents didn't know any better but we have no excuse in this day and age.

Not nightmare but these are situations that can be avoidable. Don't you feel sorry for a child born with such ailment when the parents know fully well the consequence of their actions?

Is important to know your genotype and blood group. You can't believe that one day I visit a popular lab at ikeja for my blood group test. At the end I was told that am 0+. I even included that in my nysc identity card. When I was sick and was taken to hospital and another test was conducted to my surprise that I am actually A+ instead of 0+. Now I ve to mention that lab name to ensure people don't rely total on their result. Juli pharmacy is the place. I ve since visit 3 other labs for verification and it still comes out A+

Juli pharmacy is a pharmaceutical store not a lab or diagnostic centre, you just encountered a case of professional "quackery". If you have any tests to do, a pharmaceutical shop isn't the right place for that you visit a hospital laboratory or any APPROVED diagnostic centre (looking at the place alone you can tell it's not been operated by quacks).

I am SS, slowly but surely I am fulfilling my destiny. I have just been admitted for my PhD program in UI. It may take a while but we'll make our mark, we are survivors, SS is not a death sentence.
