So, this is something I should have done a long time ago, and in grand style. But "things" happened.

anyway, the purpose of this thread is to reeducate people on the earth they live on. I've actually noticed(to my disappointment) that certain entities have managed to convince a great amount of people that the earth is flat. This is false. the earth is quite round. and in the next few entries, I will provide a few compelling reasons.

# ships that sink below the horizon.

I intentionally included this because it's kind of cliché. One of those things you learn in geography class in high school. But the fact is, the phenomenon of sinking things is a very compelling evidence and till date has never been successfully challenged. Look, I know you're tempted to claim: Telescopes bring them back. This is false. Once an object goes behind the horizon and sinks, it is impossible to "bring it back" via telescope. The only thing you will get is far more detail on the part which can still be viewed. In fact, the only way to see the sunken half of the ship is to go higher, which doesn't make sense on a flat earth.

I hope you can see for yourselves. Alternatively you can always acquire your own telescope and perform the experiment.

# The distance of the sun

Flat earthers claim the sun is quite close to us and therefore quite smaller than 'lying scientists' would have us believe. Unfortunately, this . . . is false. In ancient Greece, by using a simple trigonometric method, a brilliant Eratosthenes calculated the distance of the sun to quite accurate values. But, say he was wrong, or lying, 2k years later, an equally smart Alec discovered spectrums. Isaac newton. Even more delightful, the notion of a 'black body' was discovered and our sun is closely one. Now, a blackbody is a body which, by analyzing the kind of spectrum it produces, you can know how hot it is. This is done by Wien's law. Eventually, we find out that the sun has an envelope of gases that are as hot as one million Kelvin. If the sun were THAT close, we'd be dead. Interestingly, when you accept Eratosthenes calculations, by using the Stefan-boltzman law, you can Confirm the Sun's size which agrees with the next entry.


# The distance of the moon

It is also commonly argued that the moon is all closer and stuff. So that should make sense . . . except if you aimed a radar beam at the moon, it would take 2.6 seconds to come back. Which means the moon is Quite far: about 250k miles away. Not only that, some astronauts have since put reflective materials on the moon so that a laser can go and come back. Meaning you can actually measure the Moon's distance in real time (if you can purchase equipment). Equally, by using parallax and trigonometry, you can calculate both the distance and the diameter of the moon. Both of which are 400 times smaller than that of the sun mentioned above. Which is why total eclipses are even possible in the first place. You'd be at a loss to explain this on a flat earth.


# gravity

Whichever way you choose to explain gravity, we all know it exists as a seemingly magnetic force that attracts everything. However,
1. Gravity is not magnetism. It does care about magnets or not.
2. Gravity is not electromagnetic either. It's simply too weak to fit the bill.
This is 2017 and gravity has only ever been observed to interact with matter. Even when it's invisible (dark matter). Isaac newton and Einstein developed several complex theories and gravity pops up everywhere. Not just that, henry Cavendish developed a cool way to actually calculate the constant of gravitation. An experimental proof of gravity. Therefore. Since gravity exists, and all it's characteristics apply, a giant disc becomes hilarious. Because gravity pulls to the center. Not down. Meanwhile, on a disk, down is not the center. So if you jumped on a flat earth, you wouldn't fall down, you'd be dragged down to the arctic.(actually, you'd end up oscillating like a pendulum Bob. But hey) however, in a sphere, down = center. So when you jump, you fall to the center. Which, from your perspective, is down.

I'll quickly answer two questions in advance before some brings it up.

1. Why don't people on the 'under' side of the world fall off?

Because there is no 'under' side. A sphere exhibits perfect symmetry. So if you claim you are on top of the world, they can claim like wise. And since gravity is pulling the lot of you to the center of the earth, neither of you have a case.

2. If the earth were round, shouldn't the oceans 'pour away' like a what happens when you pour water on a tennis ball.

Okay, first, the earth is not a tennis ball. It's quite bigger. Secondly, in space. If you poured water on the same tennis ball. You'd be surprised how the water will wrap around it. Thirdly, the water falls off a tennis ball because the earth pulled the water and the tennis ball was powerless(and massless) to stop it. Every day, the earth acts like a really badass tennis ball as it holds down it's oceans despite unrelenting efforts from the sun and the moon to pull these waters. This eternal struggle manifests in what is called tides.

Kindly note that these are not proofs. Not because they can't be, but because the main point is to get you to think about it. Any and all questions are allowed. A healthy debate is always the best on every round planer such as ours.

we are basically like microscopic organisms living on the skin of this blue world, at such scale it is fully understandable why some think that the tiny part of this world that form their horizon since it appears flat then the whole thing should be flat - it can be a natural though to a tiny being refusing to develop and see thing from a much grandeur cosmic perspective.

I noticed the flat earth trends on Nairaland. At first I thought it was a joke. The evidences in support of a spherical earth is so compelling, that the question has been solved long ago.

Why can't you go there and prove otherwise rather than deceiving people here with your NASA fake theories. Can you show me the picture of the Earth that is not CGI? Can you show me earth's curvature?

sure, @ bolded. The earth casts a shadow on the moon during eclipse and it can be boldly seen. Meanwhile, I would like you to show me a a picture of the flat earth that isn't a bastardized copy of the UNICEF logo.

Also, I intend to possibly have this thread put in the nl science library. That's impossible if I don't create it in the first place.

while we patiently wait for Mr dawdy to provide photographs of a pancake earth, I will provide another reason.

the moment of inertia of a spinning body is the value that dictates how fast it will spin if given a certain torque. (force which causes rotation)
the moment of inertia depends on both the mass of the object, and the distribution of that mass. in short, the further the mass is from the center, the slower it will move. and the closer the mass is, the faster. in other words, if an object is spinning, you can affect the speed at which it rotates by redistribution of its mass.

Now, we claim the earth is round and therefore spins, hence day and night. the flat earthers claim that the earth is flat, completely stationary, and a lamp like sun orbits a point above the earth.

it therefore makes sense that if the movement of mass causes the earth to change speed, it must be spinning. this is in fact the case. by direct observation, the time it takes for a light beam to hit the moon is directly proportional to the length of a day. and since the moon has been receding since inception, our days have been getting longer.

that besides, earthquakes, shuttle launches, and even large dams have been observed to affect the length of days and nights. If the earth were flat? how would movements of mass, affect the length of a day?

what Eratosthenes figured out more than 2000 years ago, i cant believe we re going over this again in 2017... folks need to get back to the BC's to get schooled, some dont deserve to be in this modern world

One of heliocentrist’s favorite “proofs” of their ball-Earth theory is the ability for ships and planes to circumnavigate, to sail or fly at right angles to the North Pole and eventually return to their original location. Since the North Pole and Antarctica are covered in ice and guarded “no-fly” zones, however, no ships or planes have ever been known to circumnavigate the Earth in North/South directions, only East/West; And herein lies the rub, East or West-bound circumnavigation can just as easily be performed on a flat plane as it can a globular sphere. Just as a compass can place its center-point on a flat piece of paper and trace a circle either way around the “pole,” so can a ship or plane circumnavigate a flat-Earth. The only kind of circumnavigation which could not happen on a flat-Earth is North/South-bound, which is likely the very reason for the heavily-enforced flight restrictions. Flight restrictions originating from none other than the United Nations, the same United Nations which haughtily uses a flat-Earth map as its official logo and flag!

Ships appear to sink as they recede past the horizon
On the sinking ship, Rowbotham describes a mechanism by which the hull is hidden by the angular limits of perception - the ship will appear to intersect with the vanishing point and become lost to human perception as the hull's increasingly shallow path creates a tangent on which the hull is so close to the surface of the ocean that the two are indistinguishable. The ship's hull gets so close to the surface of the water as it recedes that they appear to merge together. Where bodies get so close together that they appear to merge is called the Vanishing Point. The Vanishing Point is created when the perspective lines are angled less than one minute of a degree. Hence, this effectively places the vanishing point a finite distance away from the observer.
Usually it is taught in art schools that the vanishing point is an infinite distance away from the observer, as so:


However, since man cannot perceive infinity due to human limitations, the perspective lines are modified and placed a finite distance away from the observer as so:


This finite distance to the vanishing point is what allows ships to shrink into horizon and disappear as their hulls intersect with the vanishing point from the bottom up. As the boat recedes into the distance its hull is gradually and perceptively appearing closer and closer to the surface of the sea. At a far off point the hull of the ship is so close to the sea's surface that it is impossible for the observer to tell ocean from hull.

While the sails of the ship may still be visible while the hull is perceptively merged, it's only a matter of time before it too shrinks into the vanishing point which rests on the surface of the sea and becomes indiscernible from the surface.
We know that this explanation is true because there are reports of half sunken ships restored by looking at them through telescopes.
It has been found that the sinking ship effect effect is purely perceptual, that a good telescope with sufficient zoom will change the observer's perspective and bring the ship's hull back in full view. This is not possible if the ship were really behind a "hill of water." Hence, the effect which is usually thought to prove the earth as a globe really proves it to be a plane.
It's one of the first and primary proofs of a Flat Earth. The fact that a telescope can restore a half-sunken ship demonstrates that the ship is not traveling behind a convex earth.
