We didn't get to negotiate pay because I was able to notify them beforehand about my intentions.Pay isn't structured in that sector,it depends on the firm.You can't compare LAPO or Grooming or Accion with some others.

Although I was not an Internal Contol/Compliance person,but I think I can relate with this position from my banking experience.
I guess being a Compliance Officer in a bank involves you checking/auditing banking processes which conform to the laid down policies of the bank.
For example, when a customer needs a loan from the bank, the customer is expected to come with some documents that will facilitate the loan processes. Or, documents required by the bank that will qualify the customer for the loan...
As an Internal Control/Compliance Officer, yours is to run a check on loans that have been given out which did not follow these due processes. Or simply put: yours is to ensure customers comply to your company policies. Mind you, it's not limited to loans only. Other banking processes which do not follow due process are to be discovered by you.

Call it favour, grace, mercy etc....thank God u got the job....i usually say getting a job isn't really hard....its keeping it and growing that's the hard part. Thank God u quickly know u need to be on top of ur game since u ain't qualified and gat no experience. No doubt u'll grow with the job and u'll be good at it with time.

Sadly Nigeria is a company where companies consider paper certificate rather than being smart.
You got a job of chartered accountant....standard and well known companies employ auditors or compliance officer usually are required to have a professional certification either ACCA, ICAN CFA...... to whateva experience u gain on the job I suggest u go for the certification if u want to take a career in auditing or forensic accounting....
Reason is....a micro finance bank employed u...probably they can't afford a chattered accountant for now... don't get me wrong..im just assuming....
immediately they can u might find ur self out the door or if a senior Auditor position is available u might not be considered since u ain't qualified.

In addition it will be a stepping stone for u... a work experience as an Auditor plus ur ACCA or ICAN will open doors in bigger places like bigger banks, pwc, KPMG, deloitte, etc... goodluck

where i work you earn up to 20-25k OND, 30-35K BSC, HND
pending on how much you deliver and meet targets over the years you could earn upto 65-70k thats if you have worked for as long as five years....you will get annual increment

I am surprised that HR and board can appoint someone without experience to oversee such an important department.
As an internal auditor/compliance officer, you must know EVERY thing/processes/procedures about all the departments (nature of the business) to be able to identify risk areas and mitigate against its occurrence. You should also be able to carry out compliance and substantive test among other tasks you would be involved in.
I presume you have an accounting degree or something similar for you to have been given this role or else, teller/cashiers and HoPs would use you to play ping pong.
Be sharp and smart as you undertake this position. Diplomatic and tough when conducting your duties.

I kind of agree with this. In fact, in audit this is a risk in itself and may expose the company to material misstatement or fraud,due to the lack of knowledge of the internal/compliance auditor

If you are an Accountant, either certified or not, you don't have much problems.

You duty is to stand by the standards of your industry, law of the land and general laws around you.

As a compliance manager. Your duty is essentially to ensure your company and operations are compliant with the laws- banking laws, accounting laws and conventions, IFRS, BOFID/BOFIA, etc

Also, as an internal control Manager, you are to safe-guard the assets of the company, put control measures on ground to avert crimes, fraud and criminality.

For example, you may say the custodian of cash cannot authorize. Meaning other people must approve disbursement of cash before it can be given, otherwise, cash is not going out. etc

NOTE: You must be conversant with the laws, standards, government policies, professional ethics, etc

Congratulations! this is GOD's favour, it qualifies us when we are not qualified.

You have to get all the banks policies and study them. This includes HR policies, credit and loans policies, operations policies and procedures. You also need to study central bank of Nigeria Prudential guidelines; this provides guidance on how bank are to manage their credit and operational risks. Your biggest job as internal auditor and compliance officer is to ensure that all these internal policies and CBN guidelines are fully complied with by the bank.

Your job is to safeguard the company's assets and ensure smooth operational efficiency. This involves checking the attendance register to ensure all staff sign in and out at right time, vetting procurement policies and ensuring transparent procurement system which ensures that the bank get value for every money spent on procurement.

You have started a noble career, so as a person, need to have integrity; you must strive to be honest in all your dealings. You must be seen and perceived by all as not been bias or having any skeletal in your cupboard.

Finally, read, join the professional associations such as ICAN, IIA, ACCA, CFE so that you can grow and become a seasoned professional that companies will be willing to spend a fortune to hire.

Thank you for all you've said.Many times we enter a firm as entry-level staff,do well at that level and get recommended for promotion in higher roles.I've worked in a microfinance bank before,I know what the job involves but maybe not fully.There are people who would be working with me not like I'm alone,thanks again for sensibly raising your red flag and at the same time encouraging me.
