Seven

The hotel room came slowly into focus as sun rays filtered through the window blind, adorned by beautiful curtains drawn aside. Otunba rolled on his side, the bed felt oddly large. His mind drifted into consciousness as he watched Ella sleep soundly beside him. Then he remembered. He was in one of the suites in Hotel Majestique. He checked the time, 8:30am.

The events of the previous day came flooding back. He had agreed to meet Ella at the restaurant of Hotel Mjestique along ring road by 5pm. Ella had called him by 6pm; apparently she was stuck in traffic. By 6: 30pm, she strode in majestically.

“Hi,” Ella called out to him. She clasped his arms and kissed him on the cheeks. “Sorry I’m late.” She apologized, slightly out of breath.

“Don’t worry about it.” He sat in the chair beside hers at a table near the window, unable to take his eyes off her. Her short off shoulder black dress clung to her curvy body like a second skin, revealing most of her b**bs and beautiful, toned legs. Adorning her soft lobes were a pair gold earrings, shimmering in the light. When he looked around, he noticed that most of the men had their eyes on her too. “You look great.”

“Wow, thanks.” She said shyly. “I’ve prepared for this day for ten years now, and I still came late!” She giggled. She reached across the table and squeezed his hands. “I’ve missed you, Jay and im glad you agreed to the date.”

“This is not a date, Ella,” Otunba said, partly to convince himself he was in control. “I have to be out of here in twenty minutes, my wife and children are waiting.”

“I understand.”

“Thanks. Now let’s talk about Darasimi.”

A waiter arrived with their order of Chicken and chips with a bottle of chardonnay. Ella served the wine in two glasses. Otunba tried to stay focused on the fact that he was there to discuss his daughter, but Ella was making that difficult.
They sat in silence for a moment, them Ella broke the silence. “I can make your life a lot better, Jay.”

“My life is just fine, Ella.” He responded with a trace of anger.

Ella swallowed. She was well aware that Jay wasn’t going to let her off the hook easily. She had left him to look after a two-week-old baby, knowing that he had no mother or sister to support him. But she needed them both. “look me straight in the eye and tell me you don’t find me attractive.” She teased.

“Seriously?” Otunba smiled, “You are indeed attractive, but I find something about you repulsive.” He added.

“Really?” Ella saked. “I cant stop wondering how you ended up marrying Liz, you never liked your women short.”

“That short woman nursed your daughter for eight good years because she was a very sickly child. That short woman abandoned her nursing program because your child needed twenty four hours attention. And you know what the elders told us about your daughter?” He looked at her sternly before he continued, “ They said she needed her MOTHER.”
For a very brief moment, Ella appeared sober. Then she snapped out of it. “ I did what I had to do. Now I can afford to take you and Helena---“

“Her name is Darasimi.” Otunba cut her short.

“Okay, fine. Darasimi. You are 47,going on 48, you live in a three bedroom apartment that you are yet to complete since three years you moved there. Let me change your world.” She had pleaded.

They had gone on and on till 8pm when Otunba’s phone began to ring endlessly.

“That your wife?” Ella asked.

“Yes.” Otunba said and stood up to go.


Just then, the heavens opened up, hurling a deluge of rain and thunder. Otunba sat down and placed his head on his palm.

He walked to the window and drew the blinds, then turned on the light. He stood beside Ella as he admired her body. He had let down his guard after a drink or two. To his surprise, he did not regret it.

As if she felt his eyes on her body, Ella opened her eyes and rubbed them, yawning. “Hi sweetie.”

“Morning, Ella.”

She rolled up to him and hugged him tightly. For a moment they stayed in a tight embrace, then Otunba broke free, aware that his life had suddenly become much more complicated.

His phone began to ring. Caller id showed wifey. “Hello, Liz.” He said to the mouth piece, “I’m on my way home.” He ended the call and turned to Ella, still unclad on the bed. “I have to go now.”

“Where?”

“Home”

“I wish you don’t have to go home to her.”

“I have to.” Otunba gave her a peck on the cheek and reached for his clothes in the closet.
She got up lazily. “I have transferred some money into your account, try and get your travelling passport as discussed. Let me wow you with a trip to the best holiday resorts in Asia and Australia. And don’t forget, you can’t continue doing serious business in that shopping complex. I have arranged for a befitting office along ring road, the office comes with a brand new car.”

“Thanks,” Otunba said as he slipped into his shirt and trouser, his dream seemed to be coming true. “I’ll get the passport ready.” He turned to her and kissed her, headed to the door and was gone.

Ella stared at the door for several minutes; she pulled a pillow close and smiled in contentment. She grabbed her phone and pressed 1 on her speed dial. “I got him, mum.” She said with a loud scream.
