Episode 5



Transporter in-law



The sweet smell of chicken soup woke me up from sleep. If not that it was the smell that woke me up I would have slapped whoever did because in my dream I went to a party. I was served fried rice, jollof rice, beans, egg, yam and palm-wine. As I was about to put a spoon of the food into my mouth, I woke up.


I followed the smell of the chicken soup to my backyard. Tajudeen and Rokibat, the busy fingers, were taking turns sampling the pot of soup on the coal pot. I cleared my throat and they looked up in fear; they were up to no good as usual.


“ Wetin dey happen for here?” I asked, moving closer to them. I could see chunks of chicken in a thick tomato soup.


“ Mama, we find dis chicken for roadside and we use am make soup.” Tajudeen replied.


“ When you find the chicken e dey alive or e don die?”


“ Mama, the chicken don die o,” Rokibat replied, “ Na dead chicken we see and we no want make e rotten and dey smell anyhow for street so we carry am.”

I collected the spoon from her and taste the soup. It was very delicious, I made to take some more when I heard a man’s loud voice cursing. The voice drew nearer and Baba Landlord appeared.


“ Oh ooo! So na una thief my chicken?” He shouted, looking into the pot of soup.


I was vexed. How could he call us thieves. “ Baba Landlord, take your time o. This one resemble your chicken?”


“ Well…” He stammered, “ My chicken dey miss”


“ Shey your own chicken don die? This one na dead chicken o” Rokibat said.


“ Shey your chicken get bow legs?” Tajudeen asked, “this one get one eye and two bowlegs.”


“ Abi your chicken na woman?” I asked, “because I know say na man chicken you get. Look this one very well o”


Baba Landlord marched away angrily.


“Mama! Mama!” I heard Sulia call me. She walked towards us with a young man.


“ I hope say devil never use your destiny clean yansh. Na why you dey shout my name so and who be this iroko tree you carry come jam us?”


“ Mama, na my boyfriend be this. He say he wan marry me and hin na transporter”


Tajudeen and Rokibat jumped up happily. The young man with tattoo all over his arm prostrated before me.


“ I hope so epilepsy never chop una brain.” I said, facing the two jumping baboons.


“ Good day ma, My name na Alani and I be transporter.” The young man said, revealing an empty upper gum. I com dey wonder say wetin chop hin front teeth.


Mama Shege was walking by at that time and she jumped up happily. She pulled me aside and started whispering.


“Thank your stars o,” She said. “Transporters dey get money o”


“Ehen…” I said happily, “Na who dem be?”


“ People wey get big, big trailers and motors like Dangote. Shine your eyes wella o,” She said and went on her way.


I went back to my children, smiling like a goat that just discovered a field of green grasses.


“ Welcome my son. Rokibat, go buy golden-penis supa-geti come” I said,” tell mama Emeka say I go pay her later.”


I was so happy. A whole me, having a transporter as in-law? They go hear am hot for area! That was how we started living large o, buying things on credit, fighting everybody even mama shege too. We join hands beat Baba landlord, after all when my transporter in-law bring Sulia bride price we go move go Island. Even Sulia herself just dey change hair styles like peacock. Soon the news spread reach everywhere and everybody start to dey respect us.


Even smilethatcharm, chumzypinky, justicextian Colik, ladyverere,yorhnmienerd and some other rich people for our area start to dey give us face but I no send them. Long throat people, where dem dey wen we dey eat beans and grasshoppers.

Na so we dey ball dey go until the day I realize say water don pass garri. Mama shege told me that she saw my in-law in a motor park and it seems he was a conductor. She be bad belle so I no mind her, she con offer to take me and Sulia go the park she for see am.


“ Oya carry us go there! Bad belle woman!” I said angrily.


“ Mama no mind her o” Sulia shouted, ”Alani is a transporter.”


Na so we put leg on top leg and begin trek go Oshodi motor park. As we reach na hin we hear somebody wey wan resemble Alani dey shout but my eyes no gree believe say na him. He dey fight somebody for ten naira.


“ Funmi lowo mi oo” Alani shouted, holding the other man’s collar.” Give me my ten naira! I help you call passengers finish, you con dey give me forty naira! Na fifty naira be my money o!”


“ Mogbe ooo” I screamed. See Alani wey I put hope for go dey buy things on credit and dey fight everybody. Even yesterday I tell chumzypinky say I no want see her for my house again. Gbese!


“Alani!” Sulia screamed.


He turned around and looked at us and the other man he was holding slipped off his fingers and took off. “ Ehen wetin be una problem?”


“ Sulia! Shey I hope say he never shine your Gongo o!” I shouted.


Sulia jumped up and screamed.” Mama, he even polish am ooo”


“ Ntoor, I no talk am?” Mama shege said.



“ Una dey craze o,” Alani shouted, “ See now, that ediot don carry my money run” He started loosening his belt,” If I count from one, two, five, four, three, if una never..”


Mama Shege started running, Sulia took off her slippers and followed suit. Na so I follow them run too o as Alani begin to pursue us with belt. See how Sulia and her transporter boyfriend don put me for gbese. Na where i go start from now?
