Valeri, Adi strike as Portland thrashes expansion Minnesota United

The Portland Timbers spoiled Minnesota United's coming-out party in the 2017 MLS season, beating the first-year team 5-1 on a rainy night at Providence Park.

The visitors had an early chance, with former Orlando City SC midfielder Kevin Molino forcing Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson to make a save on a well-hit shot from distance in the 10th minute

But it was Portland that scored first, with new arrival Lawrence Olum heading home in the 14th minute from a set piece to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Minnesota failed to create chances to score, but the expansion team's defense held firm against the hosts' star-studded attack throughout the opening 45 minutes and went into the locker room down only a goal at the end of the first half.

However, just two minutes into the second half, Portland doubled its lead from a well-worked team move with Diego Valeri heading home from a Sebastian Blanco cross.

And Blanco nearly had Portland's third after a loose ball fell to the Argentine's feet at the top of the 18-yard box, only for the ensuing volley to skip just wide of the Minnesota goal.

The Loons would not go away, though, and cut the lead in half just before the 80-minute mark. Christian Ramirez settled a Johan Venegas pass at the top of the penalty area, turned and fired past Gleeson to make it 2-1 to register the first MLS goal in Minnesota United's history.

Portland restored its two-goal lead just minutes later, though, when Valeri scored his second -- this time from the penalty spot -- after Fanendo Adi was hauled down in the area.

And Adi would add his first goal of the 2017 campaign on the counter-attack, beating two defenders and Minnesota goalkeeper John Alvbage to make it 4-1.

To cap things off, Adi added a second with a brilliant piece of individual skill to beat three Minnesota defenders and put Portland up 5-1 in injury time.

The Timbers start 2017 with three points and a spot atop the Western Conference ahead of the rest of the weekend's action, while Minnesota will look to regroup ahead of a Week 2 meeting with fellow expansion team Atlanta United FC.

NPFL: Rangers Match Winner, Etor says he’s Settling Well in Enugu

( npfl.ng) Since the start of this season’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), champions Enugu Rangers have had their title defence rather more difficult than they could have imagined. The season got off to a worst possible start with a home loss to Abia Warriors – a team they got four points from last term.

Adding to the Flying Antelopes’ inability to kill off teams especially at home were the distractions of playing on the continent and also losing key players especially last year’s Nigerian Footballer of the Year, Chisom Egbuchulam and Nigerian Olympic goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel.

One of the new players brought in by the team was former Enyimba of Aba winger Daniel Etor. The Akwa Ibom born left-footed star bore the brunt of the fans’ anger after he was criticized in his team’s home loss and draw against Abia Warriors and Niger Tornadoes respectively, games wherein he came on as second half substitute.

In a chat with npfl.ng after he scored the only goal that secured victory for the champions against ABS FC on Wednesday, Etor acknowledged it was indeed a tough start for him in Enugu.

“It was not an easy one at the initial stage,” began a relieved Etor. “A lot of pressure were on the new players because the fans want to see what we can offer to the club. They believe the old players were better than the new ones so we knew we had a lot to do to convince them.”

Etor whose goals in successive home games for the Flying Antelopes at ‘The Cathedral’ has directly contributed to the team winning successive home games for the first time this season also explained the impact of team’s technical adviser Imama Amapakabo in allowing him to bounce back after the rough start.

“When the whole thing was not working well, the coach, the T.A (Imama) had to call me and we talked like father and son. He told me he has a lot of belief in me for me to join his team and he believes in my capabilities to deliver at any time. The only thing left for me being just to set myself up which I have done with hard work and prayers,” added the diminutive winger.

While admitting that Rangers’ 14th position placement on the league log is not where they want to be, the former Akwa United star agreed and said they need to up their game going forward.

“We know we are not in a good position but the key for our improvement is making sure we make every game count. That is what we are going to be doing starting from Sunday against Rivers United,” he affirmed.

Etor was substituted on 52 minutes in the win over ABS after an undisclosed injury but the match winner assured that it will not hinder him from being part of the team that will make the three-hour trip to Port Harcourt on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game against Rivers United

Football is tougher now, when u look at the amount of effort it takes to be on CR7's level Maradona did not work as hard. Defenders are faster, stronger and are given more information prior to matches. It is much harder to perform now. With drug testing the game is cleaner now also.

CR7 can never do what Zidane did against Brazil in the 2006 World Cup. That performance was one of the best magical feat achieved on the pitch. Football of those greats was pure artistry.

Maradona's talent was not due to drugs. Take a player and feed him as much drugs as you like, he will never have the kind of ability Maradona had. He was unbelievably good. By 1979, when he matched out for the World Youth Championship, the stadium was jam packed because people wanted a glimpse of the magic of the demi football god and the little football sensation did not fail.

Football back then was more artistic than hard work. It was a test of ability than stamina or strength. They were more gifted and the game today is sour.

Leicester dynamo Wilfred Ndidi has potential to surpass N'Golo Kante

It may have startled people to be told Wilfred Ndidi was better than N'Golo Kante when the former moved to Leicester in January, but such a lofty statement doesn't look so outlandish now.

There were many who took exception to such a claim. And considering just how pivotal the Frenchman was to the Foxes' title win last term, and his continued consistency for Chelsea this season, you can understand their position regarding such an elevated opinion on an unknown quantity. And to be honest, that's fine.

But it can't be hard to imagine that posse Ndidi doubters are starting to change their view. Not after the Nigeria international's showings this season, and certainly not after Monday night's barnstormer in Leicester's 3-1 thrashing of Liverpool.

Ndidi may be some way behind Kante in terms of development and maturity, but he has the talent, the temperament and the willingness to learn and improve. His repertoire was once more on display on Monday night. He won 11 of his 14 tackles, a feat exceeding the entire Liverpool defence combined and bettered only by Kante, the man he replaced and with whom he has been compared. Kante won three more against the same opposition earlier in the season.

Ndidi also made five out of five clearances from his penalty area, added another three out of three headed clearances and won three of six aerial duels in a robust, full-bodied performance. For all of that, he was only penalised for one foul. One. What the numbers do not say, however, is the devastating effect his midfield command played in disrupting Liverpool's game to facilitate Leicester's.

While it may have been considered a stretch to rate the youngster so highly so early especially with little exposure to top level football, it was most certainly not a claim borne of flippancy.
All of the critical markers were already in place. Ndidi only turned 20 last December, but his understanding, interpretation and execution of his role in midfield is one that puts him a position to be among the best in the world within a few years.

It would not be a stretch to say that his development is more advanced than Kante was at the same age. At 19, the Frenchman was in the reserves at Boulougne in the French second tier and would not make his senior debut until two years later, dropping down to the third division a season after. He did not get to the top flight until he was 23.

By contrast, Ndidi moved straight from a semi-pro team in Nigeria to Genk at 18, and has taken just under a year to step up to one of the biggest and most competitive leagues in the world, where he is now thriving almost effortlessly.

He led the Europa League in interceptions while in Belgium, and has now brought the same cultured bulldog style to England. That style is fashioned by his versatility. Starting out as a striker, Ndidi has filled in competently in attacking midfield, full-back and centre-back positions at different times at both club and international level.

Here's the scary part: Ndidi is still evolving as a player. For all of his natural abilities, the one thing that points to an outstanding future is his continued humility and willingness to put in an honest training ground shift and improve on a day-by-day basis.

It is a trajectory that leads in only one direction: up. The more Leicester continue to improve, the more Ndidi will flourish. It may be early days but should come as no surprise if the suits at the King Power begin to look over their shoulders at potential suitors for Ndidi, or start looking to upgrade the size of their piggy bank to offer him a new deal. Either way, it's a win-win for them, and for Gernot Rohr and his Nigeria Super Eagles.

One thing is for certain: Leicester have definitely found the man to fill the Kante-sized hole in their midfield.

Super Article, Super Post.

Reading this makes me wish Mancini took over Leicester City. His work with Yaya Toure was legendary and I believe he would have unearth the true quality of the young Nigerian maestro. I hope a top quality coach handles Ndidi soon.

How can u say Ronaldo would never do something, did Zidane ever score over 60 goals for Madrid in a season.
Maradona did cocaine which is not a performance enhancing drug. Football would be dull to think that the culture of steriods didn't exist in the sport. U cannot tell me that u know all football players have been clean with wat we know about other sports. Fact is FIFA was slow to act on any doping for a long time.

that is all you worry about isn't it? Ok Bro, go and compare CR7's stats to that of Gerd Muller and Van Basten, CR7 doesn't even come close.

The traits that define a great player isn't only the ability to score a lot of goals. For the past 6 seasons Ronaldo has been scoring goals consistently I agree, but has he been beating opposing defenders consistently? His dribbling stats are worse than that of....Kante! His key passes per 90 minute is very low, these are things that Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Zidane did consistently week in week out. Granted Ronaldo is AMONG the best goalscorers in the world(Romario and Muller are stil better than him in that aspect)but he is in way among the best ever. How many Balon d'ors did Gerd Muller win? None, but he was consistently the highest goalscorer year in year out, that was because back then people came to watch good football, not just the win-at-all-cost mentality that we see here.

CR7 in the 80s, 90s or even early 2000s MIGHT have only won one Balon D'or, the one he won in 2008 was quite deserved on all fronts(that's assuming the other players back then weren't in top form), stop counting goals alone, look at it from separate angles

Maradona's coach when Maradona was about ten years confessed He had nothing to teach him. Maradona played football on a local field and a weak old man gave Maradona his most prized possession, a bicycle because Maradona as a small kid gave him his most euphoric moment of his life.

You can hail CR7 for his goals. That is it but football of those days was more than goals. It was about the beautiful art of the game. It felt like having an epiphany while listening to one of the greatest music composers.

CR7 scored lots of goals but it is difficult to trade the magical moments of Ronaldinho when he ripped apart Gatusso in two games in the Champions League. Or Ronaldinho's magical feat against Villareal before the Champions League final against Arsenal.

You left a match with a huge smile on your face and a memory that will take two life times to forget.

We are talking of Kaka lobbing the ball over Manchester United's defenders with Vidic and Evra crashing into themselves. Or Kaka dribbling a player and the player's leg broke.

Ronaldo de Lima giving a jaw dropping first half performance with a hat trick at Old Trafford. The Manchester United fans giving Ronaldo de Lima a standing ovation when the coach chose to sub him off very early in the game to balance the equation.

While I won't go as far as saying that CR7 cant do what Zidane used to do, watching Zidane's exploits in Euro 2000 (especially vs portugal) and his display against Brazil in '06 makes it difficult for me to say Messi and CR7 would have dominated this much in his era. Even Zidane didn't dominate at his peak as players like Figo, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Henry also held sway

Give the coaching crew time before the negativity. Even the English coaching crew were myopic to the quality of Iwobi. Will you call that bribery and corruption?

What negativity

I don't think anything has changed for Iwobi where England is concerned. Do you really think he will be a regular in the senior team for England. Have no doubt that we rate Iwobi a lot higher than they do.

You have to at times put on objectivity not sentimentality when taking a view of English football. What are the dynamics, mentality and inherent cultural perceptions that form thier deductions where football is concerned.

I have met and know too many black players at every level England international, Nigerian internationals, etc, etc. And every single one of them attests to race being an issue to me, they may not be keen to say in the public domain. I also know this to be true from my own experience. However, that becomes even more pronounced the more up north you go.

If not for the pass that caused the Hull goal he'd prolly have been around 8.8. Very clean game he had. This guy won the ball. I still feel Onazi is a better ball winner but Ndidi is fast catching up with every passing game. And he's even more fluid with the ball. But he should learn to initiate more quick breaks with passes on the floor and not on the air. The time it takes to control an air pass makes the defenders catch up..... All round I'm being sold on this guy with every passing game.

to me,Zidan and Ronaldo delima even Ronaldinho is better than CR7. Only messi can be said to b better, however if Messi had played in the era of Ronaldo and Zidan,he wouldn't have dominated for so long, especially in the world cup years.
